Where do you clean your guns?
Where do you guys clean your guns? Until now, I have been cleaning mine at the kitchen table...but, since we just got a very nice, brand new kitchen table (wood) and a new hardwood floor, my wife is concerned (and with some justification, since I have been known to spill and drop things.) For now, I'm putting down a drop cloth on the floor, and a plastic bag covered with a towel on the table...but still, the wife gets that frown on her face.
We have a covered, screened-in back porch with chairs and a table...that will be nice for the spring and fall. Not so much in the depths of winter or the 100 degree summer. Likewise, the garage and shop...neither of which are air conditioned or heated. I do have a study, but it is carpeted, and I don't like that idea myself...like I said, I have been known to spill, even I admit that.
So, just looking for suggestions from those who have wives who value furniture and floors over handguns! Maybe I just need to bite the bullet and put in heat/ac in the shop, and cable TV, a refrigerator, and a bathroom. Of course, then my wife may never see me again!

In the garage.
I have a few times done the kitchen table thing. I have one of those gun cleaning mats (carpet with liquid proof lining on the bottom) I put newspaper on top just to be sure.
The smell does not go over well with the boss.
Suck it up and clean on the porch or garage, better ventilation. You'll stay married longer Well maybe.
It's brutally hot and humid here so I know what you mean. I have a bunch of fans going in the garage.

Got the same problem so I clean on the table on the back porch, put a towel down and some newspapers and you're ready to go. I too think solvent smells good, not as good as napalm but close. Remember, when momma ain't happy ain't nobody happy!

Some time ago, I talked to my local utility crew & wound up the owner of a wire spool. It's 32" in diameter & 28" high. I have it in my basement shop area far enough from the wood stove that we have fair working conditions all year round.
One side has the reloading press bolted down & on the other side I bolted a cleaning vise. Spare refig is 5 feet away, lathe etc is against the far wall.
Boss (wifie) problems I don't have an answer for, no one will put up with me except my two dogs.

Mostly on the insides, a quick wipe off usually takes care of the outsides of my guns.

I have a quarter sheet of plywood that I throw a towel over. If it ever gets too nasty then it gets a scrubbing and another layer of sealer. So far it has worked.

I use my workbench in my garage. If it's too cold I just open the door into the kitchen and let the heat from the house warm it up some. It's insulated so a little heat sticks around awhile. The solvent I've used for some time(Butch's Bore Shine) is definitely too nasty to use in the house.

I like to do a quick wipe down at the range leaving plenty of ER bore cleaner on the guns to soak in, and then when I get home I do a full clean on my garage workbench.

I'm set up in the basement with an old folding table next to the washer & dryer. Oders from the solvents disapatate down there and my wife usually does not notice . . . unless the wash is being done @ the same time!

Sounds like you have the situation under control. I use a large steel desk in my den and follow a similar plan, although I use newspaper rather than a towel. One rule I follow to minimize spills is to make sure any open bottle is always placed at least a foot away from the newspaper work area.

Wherever I want!! I'm divorced. My house reeks of Hoppes, gunpowder, cold beer, grilled meat and pipe tobacco smoke. I don't dump any of it on the carpet or hardwood floors. Nice weather I scrub them good on the deck, bad weather in the kitchen. Probably didn't help much but that's how my son and I do it.

I clean my guns on my computer desk, in my finished basement. That area is my man cave, and if I want to clean my guns there, I will do so rather callously.
So far the boss has never complained about the smell of Hoppes solvent.

My wife bought me a folding table that is 18"X26" and is heavy duty.
In the winter I cover it with an old piece of cloth of unknown origin. It stays pretty clean between washings. I sit it in front of my recliner and clean my guns while I watch movies and drink beer. In the summer I have an old wicker table that sits under the big Oak in the front yard. It is perfect for BBQing and cleaning guns.
I have no problem with the wife thing. When I heated with wood exclusively, I have sharpened the saw on a pile of newspapers on the coffee table with no complaints. God bless my wife!
Peace,
gordon

I built this after we moved into a new house in 2009. I have a 8X12 room at the rear of my garage.
I have a portable heater and a portable A/C.

OCD is right on.
Not everyone is blessed with basement or special area, so some of us end up 'out in the cold'.

In the garage at my work table. I got an old laminated counter top from a bathroom remodel that I mounted on a lumber table I built. It's solid as a rock and the old laminate is ugly, but makes cleaning up a breeze. I just spray it down with simple green and wipe with a shop paper towel. All the gun cleaning chemicals/residue/etc. wipes right off. It's hot in the summer, but it's Georgia; I'm used to it. A fan is all I need.

In the very cold and VERY hot seasons we have here in NC, I clean my guns in the basement. I use cheep plastic place mats, which the lovely and charming picked up at a close out sale. I then covet those with old news paper, works great at keeping the table top clean.
During the spring and fall seasons I use the same plastic mats and newspapers but I do my cleaning on the back deck. Nothing like enjoying the scent of Hoppies #9 mixed with the aroma of the dogwoods on a clear sunny day.

I usually go to the garage, but will do it in the spare room and must confess, that especially with a long gun, the ironing board works great !!

I also have a gun room to work on and clean my guns. However, most of the time I clean my guns as I finish firing them at the range. I always take my cleaning kit with me.
