Since the last five years or so I get an attack once or maybe twice a year, tops. And one hit last week and it's the first time I have residual pain left over in my big toe. Hope that goes away. My wife buys pure cherry juice for me and I have a glass every morning. It's not that expensive and is always on sale at one of two stores. This last attack might have been the worst ever. Even when it's not the worst, the weight of a bed sheet feels like an anvil on your sore toe or foot.
My dad had gout and made a box to stick his foot in under the blankets. I like beer, shellfish, and red meat but the beer is what I intake on a regular basis of those three. I don't know if cherry juice is an urban myth but if I get gout only once a year (lasts a couple days for me), maybe it does work.
The pain I felt last week was the worst I ever encountered. It took pain to a new level but seems trivial compared to what Gamedic described. Knowing what one big toe feels like is bad enough, but to endure his attacks in beyond comprehension. Sometimes the pain is deep for me and you can't just point to the spot. The swelling is minimal compared to the pain, for me anyway.
Thaks for bringing this up. That one medicine a few of you brought up sounds encouraging. I'm finishing the book "The Boys Of '98" for the second time and General Shafter in Cuba during the Spanish/American War had, it's described, a "gouty leg". And bounced around in a buggy to get around. I felt his pain, man! But, it's preferable to a 7MM Spanish Mauser bullet zippin' through you. (Hey. I made this gun related!)
