Anyone here ever eat a bean pie or like them? I bought one recently off one of those Black Muslim guys selling them on the corner. I'm surprised they still do that. It was delicious.

My only other experience with them has been at catfish/soul food type places occasionally (don't eat the buffalo fish,ask me how I know). I've also eaten a pie at these type places called chess pie I've determined. Seems to be a southern thing and hard to find. Suppose to be like vinegar pie w/o vinegar (I've never had vinegar pie or raisin pie I hate raisins) and similar to the pecan pie filling.

It's very sweet but good. Wikipedia has a small article on it. Another hard to find pie is rhubarb. Usually when you find it it is mixed with strawberry due to the tartness.

I've had a hankering for custard pie lately I don't really see those often either.

Chess pie is good. I also like buttermilk pie!

I made a meat pie for dinner the other night. Not exactly a pot pie, or a shepherd's pie, kind of like a taco pie without the tex mex color. I don't know. But it needed potatoes. I'll have to try again.

Never heard of bean pie. I guess it's the same idea as pumpkin or sweet potato pies?

After an experience with a street vendor in Old Mexico, possibly a "gato taco." I won't eat anything from then ever again. Might have to try a bean pie if I can find a recipe.

Shoofly Pie. Being in the heart of Pa Dutch-land they are common hereabouts, but I've had strange looks from outsiders when mentioning them. The same people are agog at the thought of purple colored, pickled red beet eggs. Rhubarb pie and the strawberry/rhubarb variation are my favorite when in season. Yum! Funnel cake anyone?

Shoofly pie is good. So are whoopie pies, but I don't think those are actually pies. Whoopie pie was one of the best things about my Pittsburgh days!

My wife makes me cracker pie every year instead of a birthday cake. thick bottom crust of crushed ritz crackers, pecans, and enough of something to hold it together (eye whites ???). bake the crust, about an inch thick. Fill with real whipped cream and sprinkle with choc shavings. mmmmmmmmmmm.

She also make chicken pie.

Shoofly pie is all time favorite. Expand my stomach with a little home made scrapple , so i's be ready for it. Maybe it has to do with being a decendant of the River Brethern?

Rarely see shoo-fly pie up here, although some plain people have started setting up at the local farmer's market.

Ya'll aint living if you havn't had a "maggot pie" a.k.a. rice pie. My grandma used to make it and it was deeeeelicious. You wouldnt think something like rice could taste soooo sweet.

I'll see if I can find our old family recipe and post it later this week.

My Aunt Wilda made chess pie for Thanksgiving every year. She was diabetic but always watched what she ate during dinner so that she could have a small piece of chess pie for desert. Good stuff.

I remember reading about Bean Pie during the trek to Alaska gold fields. Seems a gal pitched a tent near to top & baked pies for the pilgrims. Ran out of canned fruit so made pies out of beans. Can't remember her name but was famous in the Klondike. Netty or Nelly I think.

I love chess pie, and various fruit pies...and I really like pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving (for some reason, that's the only time I eat it) with loads of whipped cream on top. My wife likes pecan pie, but I don't really care for it.
