Default I like my GI angle head light, what's a drop in LED conversion?

Bulbs are getting hard to find. There's a spare in light, but I like this thing and don't want to get rid of it. It's sturdy enough to let the kids playwith, cost less than the toy versions marketed for kids, and I like the ability to flash morse code with it - when I was a kid flashlights came with instructions for that in the package. ... --- ... Might come in handy one day... or was is --- ... --- eh, I ought look that up.

Anyway, what I want is simple enough. I want to pull the existing bulb and replace it with an LED unit. I'd like to either keep the thing using D cells or else convert it to take AAs. I don't have time to dig through all the flashlight forums and want to keep it simple. I tried proof of concept with the guts from a 5 dollar Rayovac LED 2D light, but that was dimmer than the existing bulbs. Still, I know it'll work, I just don't know what conversion parts I need or where to get them.

Any ideas?

(For those interested, mine is a U.S. made Fulton, but in recent years ones made in the Far East - Taiwan and the PRC - have seen actual issue. Well to the extent that any of these are still issued... )

Candlepower forum has lots of info on these, but the general consensus is to just get the 1W Nite Ize replacement bulb and put it in. Hopefully that will give a little more light than what the original did.

The Nite Ize and Terralux LED upgrade bulbs are drop in bulbs, though not any more powerful than the regular incandescent they will increase your battery life. I have one in my 6 cell Maglite and it will run for 96 hours straight.

I got lost in the flashlight geek tech speak on Candlepower forums and the like. Saw photos of other people's conversions, but none seemed precisely drop in. Someone said that 2-D maglite conversions would work, but an inquiry to a company selling such resulted in "no, that won't work".

Jamming in the guts of the $5 Dollar General special Rayovac (needed some duct tape...) worked, sort of.

I lead a rich and full life, nods. I also grind down old kitchen knives into bushcraft blades (by hand with files, so it is nice and monotonous), make spiked war clubs out of hunks of wood that I find and hack at, painted an Army of mini zombies, and of course furthered the weaponization of slinkies. Solemn nod.

Last year it was tear apart cheap shortwave radios and tinker.

I get bored with Spongebob. Shrug.

The Electolumen's Anglelux is a proper LED conversion of a GI Anglehead that will give you better heatsinking and circuitry (both of which give you longer life and more brightness) than any of the bulb conversions. I have been using several of them since 2005 with no problems at all. My mom used one with the same set of batteries in it for her main kitchen light (cooking on the gas stove) during the power outages caused by Katrina / Rita in 2005 AND Ike / Gustave in 2007. They just go and go.

If you want a drop in bubl, the SMJLED PR2 will give you very good brightness with long runtime without all the heat sink related problems that some of the higher output bulbs can cause.

not to hijack this thread but I bought a streamlight led knucklehead angle flashlight and liked it so much I purchased another. I work nights, plus like to tinker on cars, etc. Although not cheap, it is worth every penny in actual use. so far the best flashlight I have ever owned. no affiliation
