I posted a thread here awhile back about dentures and a lot of you folks responded and I thank you for that.

What I wasn't prepared for was how painful it was to have all of my upper teeth pulled! No one prepared me for that.

I had the rest of my 9 remaining upper teeth pulled 4 days ago and it was 2 1/2 hours of agony!

I have the new upper denture in but my gums are still so sore and swollen, I can't even chew at all and I tried to eat some soft pieces of watermelon today, and I couldn't do it as it was too painful.

Please, please tell me this pain will go away in a few days.

Been there, done that.... yes the pain will go away. I lost about 25 pounds from not eating much for a few days. Gained it all back again though. Drat.

They didn't give you any painkillers? I had all my uppers and all but two of my lowers pulled and thanks to Vicodins had no problems at all. Keep them plates in place, the swelling will go down a lot faster than if you take them out at all, and probably won't fit if you try and put them back in.

Do like I did, get a Chopster or Magic Bullet and run all your food through it, not pretty but at least you can eat. You can toss about anything in there, just run it till it gets about the consistency of baby food. Heck, I was eating homemade spaghetti (goop) the next day.

My favorite dentist joke: a man went to the dentist to have a filling. As the dentist bent over the man to begin, the dentist suddenly jumped and said, "Sir? Why are you grasping my privates?" The man said, "If you don't hurt me, I won't hurt you...."

My dad (who just turned 90) had his teeth pulled a couple of years ago, and he said it hurt and was very uncomfortable for a while...but the discomfort did go away and eventually he got used to the dentures. The problem is now, getting him to put them in when he talks to me on the phone...he is very hard to understand when he doesn't have his teeth in.

Dentists = pain
pain has a face...its my dentist.

Gebe, hope youre feeling better in a few days.Though I havent had the displeasure of being fitted for dentures after a bunch of extractions,I can certainly imagine the experience. They would have to knock me out and comatose me.I hate toothaches.

I hate to say this but I very recently had my teeth pulled and dentures made.

There was ZERO pain and only slight discomfort. Two days after the extractions, I still had stitches in my mouth but I was eating peanuts, corn on the cobb and about anything else I wanted.

The lady that lives with me only to keep me broke also had hers done about a year ago with the same results.

A lot depends on the dentist you use and the quality of the dentures. They are like automobiles. They come in a wide range of quality. One estimate I got was $2,300 but people that used that dental chain did not have good results. I spent $4,800 for both uppers and lowers and love them. It has been less than three months since I had it done and not had a single problem.

I don't like taking painkillers writerinmo but this time I did try some vicodin. It helped a little but when it wore off, it seemed the pain was worse. I am doing exactly what you did. My wife is pureeing everything in a little blender like the Magic Bullet. Last night she pureed a can of beef stew and I sipped beef stew gravy. :)

You put a smile on my sore face with that GKC!

You're a blessed man oldman and so is your lady! I know there are lousy dentures as well as dentists out there. This woman dentist was recommended by others who had their dentures done with her.

My wife just had both the top and bottom done last Wendsday .All she has been able to eat is some scrambled eggs with no chewing.

Tell your wife sureshotbob that I'm suffering with her! Ya, scrambled eggs and pureed stuff is all I can handle. Maybe I should try some baby food. :)

Gebe, my thoughts are with you. I was lucky with my dentures. The dentist had me wearing the plates the same day that he pulled my uppers. I didn't eat that day. The next day was soup. Three days later it was mashed potatos and hamburger steak. On the eighth day it was a T-bone steak (with a little discomfort) that surely the best steak that I ever had. The plate goes in when I get up and doesn't come out until bedtime. Hang in there. It's going to get better.

Thanks so much for your support my friend! I really appreciate your kind words and this is my 5th day so I'll really look forward to my 8th day! I'll be a happy camper if I can even chew ANYTHING. :)

Well I'm sure sorry yours didn't go well.I'm one of the lucky ones too.19 teeth pulled at one time and dentures stuck right in.Not a moments pain or problems. It's been five years now.Best thing I ever have done for myself.Try a mouth wash of warm salt water a few times a day.Helps toughen up the gum and will help with the swelling too.Good luck.Slow

Gebe,

I know that we spoke of this before and I hadn't forgotten about you. Just waiting for your post.

I'm sorry to hear that you have had this much discomfort, but in just a few more days, it will all be behind you.

I had my uppers done at about age 46.
Lowers done last year at 54.
Weak & very thin tooth enamel was the major contributing factor.

My only regret is that I wish that I had them ALL removed at about age 35! Really. I never realized how much discomfort & pain I had been in for all those years.

This past summer, I met with about 20 old friends for an evening together. Some I had not seen for several years. NOT A SINGLE PERSON realized that I was wearing full dentures and a couple actually didn't believe it! That in itself was a very positive experience and threw out alot of misgivings that I had been harboring.

Good luck to you, sir. Give it a bit more time and I'm quite sure that you will be pleased with your decision.

You've already got all the good advice I could give. Most important, don't take them out anymore then you have to to clean them and rinse gums w/salt water till they heal.If you take the dentures out alot you will never get used to them.

I was lucky, the dentist stuck a needle in my arm and I woke up with new teeth. Only really hurt for the first couple days. (I did get awful hungry)

Hi TDrane,
So far after over a week, my gums are still very swollen but the pain is down considerably. I still can't chew and have to eat "baby food" because the denture flops around in my mouth when I try to even lightly chew.

I have to continue to eat baby food for the next 3 weeks as that's when my denture will next be realigned as my gums heal.

I'm really happy for the few that have had the opposite of my experience but this has been a really trying experience for me!

Be aware that these realignments will continue for 6 months to a year and IT'S NOT BEEN FUN!!!

All I can tell you is this is a crapshoot. You may have good luck like some here have or you might have an experience like me. My dentist is a good dentist but all this depends on who you go to and how easy your teeth are to pull.

I am so sick of what I'm going through that I MIGHT have NOT gone through it if I knew what I had to go through.

Not to scare you, but that said, there's no one who can predict what you might go through but I can tell you, you might have to suck it up like I'm doing. :)

Gebe, I would disagree on the pulling of teeth. The dentist I went to is not even in this state. But he did not "pull" teeth. The gums are cut while the patient is sedated and the teeth are lifted out. There is no pulling. Pulling damages gums and creates more swelling and problems. He made a cut around my gums and then I watched as he lifted one tooth after another out of my mouth. He made some smoothing actions on the jaw bone and then sewed me up. The teeth were set in and checked for fit. All looseness was taken care of at that time. There was little swelling. I get my permanent set after four months since any swelling would be totally gone by then. In the interim, I will go back for temporary re-lining a couple times.

My word of advice to you is keep the teeth in your mouth and go back often to get them tightened up. NEVER use that dental adhesive as it does not allow a person to learn to control the teeth naturally.

Gebe here is a update on my wife she had hers pulled. Two days after she went back and he checked her out and did a small modification to the top plate. Yesterday she went back and he did a small modification to the bottom plate. She has had some soreness but is doing much better last night she made up some shredded pastromi with swiss cheese ,saurkraut and thousand island dressing she has also been able to eat some canned ravioli and spagetti so it's getting better slowly. The dentist has her comeing back weekly for a month to check and adjust as needed.best of luck to you.:D
