So what is YOUR definition of a BBQ gun?
You hear the term mentioned from time and again. The BBQ gun. Where did it come from, and what do you think it means? What is your idea of a BBQ gun?
I suppose I only have one that fits the bill. My Model 27-2

Something fancy I suppose. I don't have any engraved guns so I settle.
1917 Colt US Property .45
1917 S&W US Property .45
S&W 15-4
Springfield Armory Super .38
Rock Island Super .38
Well...guess I do have one engraved gun but I don't take it out in public much.

I always believed that a BBQ gun as a big bore handgun, shiny, fancy stocks and a fancy holster. Something like this, except for the holster.

IMHO a true Bar B Que gun would be an engraved/embelished.....
pistol or revolver, wearing fancy stocks, ivory, pearl, sterling & gold and riding in fancy leather.
For those of us without the means, might just be the best we can trot out.
Bottom line it is the best shot of the day that goes home with bragging rights at the end of the day when the dead cow and frijoles have all been consumed.
Yep good ol Ivory steerheads with ruby eyes would be very acceptable.

Well, I don't really have a super-duper-fancy gun to show you. But as far as BBQ/smoker, although it isn't as big as the one in Texas (of course not, because everything is bigger in Texas, right?) I thought I'd give you a picture of the BBQ/smoker outside of a gunshop in Sandpoint Idaho we ran across on a trip earlier this year. Drove past it and thought "Got to get a picture of THAT!" Found out inside that the gun club has a nice outdoor range partway up the mountain outside of town. Still had snow on it mid-April. Let us "non-members" shoot for $5. Can't beat that.

The one I think of as my barbecue gun is a nickled M57 four inch with a fine-grained pair of factory wood grips on it. Beautiful gun.
I am lacking in fancy leather so would have to use a El Paso Saddlery Street Combat holster, or another plain black holster by Ted Blocker.
That engraved Llama .32 looks like it could be a "barbecue backup gun."

IMO it has to be engraved. A nickel finish isn't enough to qualify. I have a bunch of nickel guns and they aren't "BBQ Guns."
It must have fancy stocks. I think ivory, pearl, stag, or at the very least an exotic wood. Carving or scrimshaw helps. Wood would probably have to have some carving. Ivory, pearl or stag can get by as is.
Some high-end leather is in order. The gun is to be worn, carried, used and showed off. No such thing as a safe queen "BBQ Gun." Carved or stamped patterns or designs, please.

Ok. You asked for it. I still haven't replaced the bullet loops on this rig that a blue parakeet ate off it. That was his last day living with us. This is my "Wild Bill Elliot" B-western rig I made twenty years ago. I decided to keep the grips facing back, though. Sorry Wild Bill.

There are classes of these guns---BBQ guns and Court guns.
A BBQ rig is always engraved---ALWAYS---if the best you can do is some fancy handles then you are what the boys call bankers--all hat and no cattle. Boys--have some silver or gold inlay in them thangs. DO NOT wear a drop loop or quick draw rig---it is a real sign of drugstore cowboy.
The grips are ivory.
The rig is hand tooled, using lots of color--always a three inch belt---some silver or gold on the rig is optional but appreciated.
Court guns are more subdued--suitable for the board room or business.
Guns are blued and engraved--no silver or gold.
Rig is equally conservative--no gold or silver conchos, no colors--conservative staining--cordivan, brown or black.
Dont even think about tie downs on these rigs---you will get laughed back to Louisiana.
I have been to these BBQ's back in the day--it will make you drool and cry.
Stareing is welcomed.
Blessings

When them folks down in the SW decide to scorch a little beef and have a snort or two, they polish their boots, slick back their hair if they got any left and wax their mustache.
They straps on their "spiffyest" Brill or Uncle Tio rig and stuff in the shinyest gun they own.
Then they strut around whilst the meat's a burnin' and decide amongst themselves who gits the braggin' rights until the next big beef burnin' takes place.
Now bein' from Wyoming, I ain't got a clear pictcher of all of the in's and out's of all of this goin's on, but I think mebbe you can get an idea of what's it's all about.
This wouldn't cause much of a stir in Texas, but it'll dazzle them in Wyoming.

A BBQ gun is a "Sunday go to meetin'" gun, not necessarily for shooting, but just for showin' off. I have a few that might qualify.
John
First, a couple of Model 27-2s; a 5-inch nickel and a 3.5 inch blued:
This should impress the rank & file:
This pair of custom Ruger Vaqueros usually gets the "old west" crowd going:
This Kimber .45 is one my favorites:
This nickeled Python gets an admiring glance now and then:
Excuse me, do you mind if I park my Thompson here on this table while I mosey over to the grill?
Funny you should ask about this one - my uncle got it from a rather unwilling Japanese soldier on Guadalcanal one afternoon. Don't you like its looks?

Japanese Type 94 Nambu pistol, made in September, 1941. Don't you like its classic flowing lines, exquisite finish and stylish grips?????

It's a beauty.I really think the trigger return spring sets it apart from all of the others.
Good thing that fellow didn't get a chance to use it on your uncle. My great uncle brought back a Luger. That's what makes these guns so special,Our uncles made it back.

Well, it ain't real fancy, but how about the 1926 .44 Special with the lowest known serial number? It was shipped to Wolf & Klar on January 27, 1927. It was one of 75 and all were 5" nickel.

I was at the annual Colt Collectors meeting yesterday in KC and I can tell you I have never seen as many "Barbecue Guns" in one place. All kidding aside it was very impressive and like collectors everywhere a great bunch of people to be around and visit with. A couple of us did lower our voices a little and used the S&W word as well. It is interesting how many of us like and collect both.

The "law Dog" has the definitive description of a BBQ gun. See attached link.
The LawDog Files: Court guns and BBQ guns.
I don't have a BBQ gun yet, but 2012 is not to far off, is it?
Mods, I hope it's OK to post a link such as this?
