Manufacture Date
Can anyone tell me the manufacture date for a Model 36, serial no.49J973. I just can't understand why such a list has not been published. Thanks for you help.

I also don't understand why it is not public record. I've been involved with guitars and serial #s are recorded, many home appliances have records, well most things do, but something as important as guns are not.

All "J" serial numbers from the "floating J" series, 1J1 through 999Jxxx, were manufactured during 1971-1972. ditrina wasn't looking at the right part of the list.
Serial numbers are proprietary information, manufacturers have no obligation to make them public information. For S&W this information is found in "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson".

Thanks fellas. I know that manufacturers have no obligation to make manufacture dates public information, but one would think S&W would be in step with fellow iconic gun makers like Colt and Winchester. Remington makes it even easier with a date code stamped on the gun. Even that begs the question: Why not a month and year stamp like Springfield Armory? End of rant. Thanks again.
