640-3 Date of Manufacture?
Last week I purchased my first Smith and Wesson revolver, a 640-3. It's such a difficult gun to find that in my joy of actually running across one, I didn't bother to ask whether the gun was new or used. The price was pretty good either way (really good if it was new), and I trust this shop owner enough not to knowingly sell me something that wasn't in good shape, so that's not an issue. But I am curious now as to whether it's used or not, just for my own knowledge. It looks like it very well may be used, but as a newbie I'm just not completely sure. I'm assuming that the date of manufacture would likely tell me that, is that correct?
Anyway, my serial number is CVP6583. If someone could look this info up for me, I'd really appreciate it.

The information on this SN prefix is a little vague. It may be from late 2004 to early 2005 but printed information at about this time is not available. Does this one have the internal lock, and can you describe the box and contents?

Yes, it has the internal lock on it. It came in what I believe is the typical S&W blue cardboard box. Also came with an external lock and key, a couple of keys for the internal lock, manual, registration card, etc. The pistol itself was wrapped in light blue kinda plastic feeling wrapping (shaped to fit a handgun), with one side of it padded. It appears that the external lock packaging had never been opened.

It may be current production; I think a 2005 gun would have been in a blue plastic box. Someone with a nearby SN may stop by with an answer.

Thanks. I should have also mentioned that in the box was also the little brown fired-bulled envelope. It has Smith and Wesson's address, FFL#, the gun's make, model, serial number, rifling, and caliber. It also has a "Collector's" first name and last initial, with a date under it of 3/25/2014. The envelop appears to be sealed with a while label over the envelope flap with the "Collector's" initials written on it. So, given that info, maybe it's new...
