Default S&W .38 model 30C

New member, so sorry if I'm posting in the wrong area, please point me to the correct place.

I'm trying, unsuccessfully thus far, to import a S&W .38 model 30C from Canada to the US. ATF disapproved my application, said they won't accept the 30C.

Anyone had success in importing this model gun that may give me precedence to go back to ATF?

My Grandfather's Grandfather purchased the pistol in 1908, or there abouts, to travel west, but I can't seem to find an exact mfg date. Thought maybe if it were mfg'd prior to 1898 I could successfully import as an antique.
Thanks!

It is probably a top break revolver in .38 S&W and it does not have a model number of 30C. Possibly a New Departure or a Safety Hammerless (depending on whether or not it has a visible hammer).

With the serial number, you could request a historical letter from Roy Jinks, which will provide the shipping date and where it originally shipped to. This might also aid your attempt at importing as an antique.

Welcome to the forum. With the info you've provided your post should probably be moved to the 1896 to 1961 forum. There are a bunch of very knowledgeable folks here who can, and will, assist you.

Could possibly be because of the paperwork is incorrect?
If you can take a photo of it and post it here, the membership may be able to help.

I would contact one of the US dealers that specialize in importation from Canada- it is definitely going to cost some $$$, but if it is a family heirloom, money isn't an option.

I don't know, but does the "point system" of importation count on handguns of that age? If so, their are options to comply with it.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm going to move the discussion over to a thread I've posted in the S&W Handejectors forum. Pictures there.

I saw your post there, and replied. Now, I see that you are in the USA, not Canada. So, my barrel length issue won't apply.

Try again, but don't call it a Model 30C. It's an old topbreak hammerless model.

There is no Model 30C. Model 30 is/was a conventional swing-out cylinder one. Not this gun.
