hello,i picked up a really cool pre-victory gun. i was going to put some original wood stocks on it but the MOP"s on it look great except that they are dirty. whats the best cleaning method?

Do NOT use soap and water! Use a soft cloth and rub gently, next polish with a piece of silk. be sure to dry all surfaces completely.

mainly looking to get the dirt out of some small chips at the edges. interested about why not to use soap and water also.

The warning not to use detergents and water is a generic one that applies to jewelry and inlays as it may ruin settings/adhesives, not grips. With something like a grip, soap and water is fine. I'd use an old toothbrush to remove dirt from the chips and cracks. Dry them then rub a bit of mineral oil (baby oil) on them and wipe the excess away.

And I think the advice to use baby oil got confused with how to clean and treat elephant ivory. I've dumped, as in sold off, all but one set of pearly grips. That last set is too nice to get rid of! :D

And a hint on repairs. Check around and see if you've got a friendly dentist in your circle of friends. The epoxy they use on teeth blends really well. I think its cured by using UV light. One of our buddies makes the repairs so good you can't tell, even when you knew where the problem was.

I see no reason to refrain from warm water, maybe not real hot. Its not always real successful because some of the dirt in cracks just won't wash out.

Now if you want something not to use, its vinegar! It'll dissolve them! :D

Mom cleans up extreee nice with American Family flakes.
