From the pics on TV, it looked like a double barrel coach gun. Talk about a bad guy's worst fear.
BTW, I've been told that women rarely point a gun at a bad guy to scare them, if they are pointing, they are also pulling the trigger at the same time.

Good for her yes it is awful that a man died but imho if more citizens would be willing to use there firearms to defend themselves we would have fewer criminals on this planet

Okay to shoot...in Oklahoma? I'm surprised the dispatcher didn't tell her to get the stock tight against her cheek and squeeze the trigger.

She said, "There's nothing more dangerous than a woman with a child." Amen, and good for the young lady.

It's a shame that someone had to loose their life, but the young mother took the only action she could. Ah.... it's good to live in Oklahoma!

The article says Ms. McKinley lives in the Oklahoma City area, and was on the phone with the 911 dispatcher for 21 minutes.
Where in the world were the police that evening? I cannot imagine why they couldn't get to the house before the bad guys gained entry.

Well at least one good thing about this is the accomplice that turned himself in will likely be charged with murder since his buddy died in the commission of a felony.

i would like to see this story emailed to the desks of every anti gun nut on a daily basis. with the reminder that if they had their way, a mother and newborn would be dead and the two criminals would be out murdering more mothers and children.

From what I read in other stories, she lives in the sticks near Blanchard. Not OKCPD by a long shot. Comments on the articles hinted that there may be some "good ol boy" stuff going on, and that the deceased was one of them. The young lady's not so young husband also passed away from cancer on Christmas day. There was quite a bit of mud slinging in all directions, and there's no way to tell which mud is dirty, so I'll leave it at that. I'm pretty sure there was more to this than meets the eye, though.

Big discussion going on over on the sigforum about this. They've got contact information for a bank account set up for her benefit. Someone over there contacted the sheriff's office who told them a local to her bank had an account set up. Looks like the bank even has a contact person who will handle donations, or gift cards for her benefit. Babies use things like diapers and baby food. Its rumored an Indiana group has sent her a shotgun since hers has been confiscated as evidence. We're behind the ball on this one.

Sounds to me like there is one less low life for the rest of the world to worry about. Unfortunately, the second guy will probably get out early and terrorize someone else.
Good job mom! We also live in a rural area and I sure hope my wife does the same thing if someone decides to break into our home and terrorize her when I'm not around to take care of him.

Not a Grand Jury in any state that would seek charges against this mother. If she dies (and she is the obvious target of the men) who takes care of the baby. Therefore, she is stating the truth when she says it was the intruder or the baby and it is not going to be the baby.
The girl has got some grit!

Many comments have been made about the over 21 minute response time to a 911 call.
It is not unusual. The larger the area, the more remote areas, during storms and such, a response time of a half hour is not unusual.
This area has an avg response time of 14 minutes for a 911 call. Remember the person calling 911 may not be the immediate concern of the police.
If the units in the area are working a crime scene, traffic accident or otherwise tied up, available units have to be brought in from other areas that are minutes away. Officers cannot stop working one incident to roll on another.
Protection is best left to the individual. As my bumper sticker says, " A gun in hand is better than a cop on the phone."

I think it's great to see an innocent person defend herself. She saved the local taxpayers the cost of a trial and incarceration of a lowlife.

I'm going to try to put this in words. I hope it comes out right.
Ya know, we've been sending 18 year old boys to war for centuries. They've performed well and made us proud. Here we have an 18 year old mother. She was faced with a situation no young person should ever have to face. Some are drawing a parallel with she bears, and how dangerous it is to get between them and their cubs. This is a much worse position to put a young mother in. She just had to face her husband dying of a terrible disease. Now a pair of vultures decided she was easy prey, and decided she'd be a simple target. Boy were they wrong. One got what he deserved. I'm just going to guess the "leader" was the one who learned that a woman with a 12 gauge is nothing to mess with.
We should be honored she did as well as she did under pressure. I wish her nothing but the best for the future.
But she does need help. She's got a ruined couch (he bled out on it) and probably carpet. Who knows how she's going to support herself and her baby. I'm not always ready to jump on every bandwagon and give to every cause. Here's one that to me seems worth. I just hope she and her young son grow up to be fine citizens. God knows her attackers weren't.

I agree. She does need help. If someone took up a collection, I'd be happy to toss in a twenty. I thought I took a bad hit when my mother passed away from MS on the day after Christmas in 2008. This poor girl lost her husband on Christmas Day, then was attacked and was forced to kill a lowlife less than two weeks later. I sincerely hope and pray that God takes some mercy on her and sends her some smoother sailing for a while.

The story was just on Nightline. She also had a handgun in the house, seems she knows the proper weapon for the task.

This lady did the right thing in what she did.
As stated before, there is more to this than meets the eye.
The only problem that I have is her posing with a shotgun and pointing it at the door showing how she did the shooting.
Why would anyone want to be on the news waving a shotgun around for the whole world to see? It just makes me feel really strange. It is hard to explain.

No offense taken. I figured that is what probably happened, them asking for the pose/reenactment. But really, she did not have to do it. She could just have let it go and refused to do it. I would not want the exposure if it were me.
Like I say, it just really bothers me to see stuff like this.

I applaud her actions and do not have any problem with her doing it.
What I have not heard or read is what is the deceased individual's accomplice being charged with. He should be charged with some type homicide.

I don't know the back story on all this,
and don't real give a damn what makes anyone want to go hmmm.
I hate that this young lady was placed in this bad situation.
No one should have to take another's life.
This mother did the right think, regardless of the 'rest of the story' .
I know of a similar incident that ac-cured several years ago...A young mother was not able to defend herself or her young son.
This perp strangled her to death and drown her young son in a sink of dirty dish water.
So, I don't think too damn much of anyone tryin to make something outta this sad news from Oklahoma.
Just my opine.
So jest keep those cards and letters.
Su Amigo,
Dave
And another thing,
I'm sending an undisclosed amount to try and help this young person out. How 'bout you?

.Breaking into a dwelling is stupid. breaking into a dwelling during the night hours is stupider, breaking into dwelling with the occupent in it is real stupid, breaking in and taking that long is stupid and dumb. breaking into a occupied dwelling with a she bear protecting her cub is right up there with insane, and to make it even more insane is when the she bear has a bouble barrel , that rates you right up there with morons. He got what he deserved no matter how retared he must have been. When somwone breaks into a occupied dwelling they get what ever bacomes their dieing wish..Which I guess was "Damn this was a bad idea" Good for her and good for the dispatcher......It really makes little difference what the side story is....You don't have to be an angel to protect you and yours. "Rather be tried by 12 than carried by 8" Still is a darn good rule....

Well it's unfortunate that anyone has to be put into this kind of situation. And I pity the life of the person that breaks into people's homes with the intent to hurt or kill innocent people. I just thank God that I live in a country that allows it's citizens the right to keep arms, so that when the worst happens, you can try to protect yourself and your family.
This poor girl did what she should have done in my opinion. It's unfortunate that, right or not, she will most likely be haunted by what she had to do the rest of her life.
Anyone who thinks that banning, or anything like banning, guns in this country or any other place, will make rotten people doing rotten things disappear...think again. Some people make the personal decision to do what they can to NOT be a victim, to hope for the best, but prepare for the worst......and others hope the people coming in the window just want the dvd player...i guess.

Of everything there is to this story, her posing for reporters bothers me the least.

Hey those two scumbags were after one thing, a newly widowed 18 year old that they knew was alone. The only regret is that she didn't finish the other one off, so now the taxpayers of OK will have to feed and house the lowlife.

Hubby just died of cancer? I'd say these boys were looking to score some leftover pain meds, oxys most likely. The girl would have been a bonus.
Happy ending as far as I'm concerned.

Her husband did not look that much older than she--he was 24.
At that age most of us lived in a less than upper middle class neighborhood.
What is bad is that she was put in this situation and will have to live with it----but----that is better than the alternative and I betcha better than the situation that the one killed is in now.
Blessings
I left my comments in but was incorrect about her husbands age--he was 58 years old and HE did teach her to shoot.
There seems to be some suspecions of the dead man wanting drugs her husband had been taking for his cancer pain control.
There is even some information that he --the man killed-- might have broken into the home before this incident.
Scum bag should have suffered until the police got there.
Blessings

Apparently, the DA argued for and got $50K bail for Mr. Stewart (the guy with the dirty undies). He's now out on bail, but I'm sure Ms. McKinley is safe now because of the no-contact order and the ankle braclet.

She has done a lot for Gun Rights even the anti gun liberal news media are telling admiring stories about her case.
Good for her, and looks like the deceased bad guy's accomplice will be charged in the death
