Default steelwater gun safes , need help here

found this company on line and they have a good web site and what looks like a good safe for the $ invested . does anyone have one of these safes ?

please check out the info on the company and give me your thoughts . i am looking at the model that holds 39 long guns and is about 700 lbs. and has a fire rating rating of 1 hour at 1800 degrees . they FREE SHIP to curb side and give 5% off to veterans .

the safes are built in china but are suppose to use high quality steel in their construction ( check out the videos provided in there web site )

i was also considering a browning silver series 26 gun model ( local lock company sells these ) and a liberty franklin model apprx. 25 gun.

but to put it straight , steelwater safes have them both beat a good bit on quality and way beat on price !
unless i find some really bad knocks against the company , i would be apt to purchase from them .
i talked to the guy in the video and he was very polite , well informed and answered all my questions .
guess the only hang up is that it is made in china but can quality steel really come from china ? !! it would seem so by the videos as the safes seem to hold up well to most any kind of break in attempt ........ but then again , i am guessing any good 12 guage steel would do the same thing .

but their safe DOES seems priced very good and the fire rating is great at 1 hr. and a whopping 1800 degrees ! this is one of the highest temps. i have seen on a safe at any price .

your thoughts , opinions very much appreciated ..

thanks rock

My thoughts - Ya get what ya pay for........

I'd try to negotiate with the local guy.
Sure The Chairman and his flunkys need to eat, but so does the local guy and his family.

If you're looking for something on-line check out Sturdy Safes. I don't know from personal experience but read a lot of good things about them on-line. Their safes are made in the US.

AND
The Chinese HAVE to sell their gun safes overseas.
NO ONE there is allowed to own a gun - Hence, no need for gun safes.

I think that supporting their country when you have a choice between them and us just to save a few bucks is obscene. [I cleaned that up A BUNCH, btw]

BUY AMERICAN whenever it's a choice!
The job you save may be your own eventually.

Default i agree ....

i dont like supporting a country where you cant own a fire arm . that is not my intention .
but the points not mentioned with only that thought in mind can cloud your thinking in a different direction .
i will also hate to pay for a safe that is way less in features and costs substantially more ..... those are MY hard earned bucks going down the drain !! that being said , i havent bought the safe yet , but PLEASE just compare the quality and and the features of the stillwater product and you will get the picture firmly.

the local guy is not really local . those folks have a large lock business in an other small town not far from here . the liberty is from in state for my nearest dealer but not local at all either .

let me also add ...... if you are buying gasoline , clothing , or food products you are supporting global economy ...it is virtually impossible not to !

maybe if the unions hadent gotten way out of hand by paying so much huge hourly wage and benefits , that usa made safe would be a good bit more reasonable !
my main points are i was trying to buy the most safe for the $ spent . i will be retiring soon and i got to get it right the first time
and you want to bet how much value a used gun safe is worth ? i am not intending to re-market my chosen safe but the least you invest for the quality purchased makes sense also because you are not " over buying " in price , which means , at least to me , you have made a wiser investment in a safe .

1. You're seeing the quality of the *demo* unit. I've lived with Chinese steel and have never seen two runs with the same quality. Actually, I've never seen two I-Beams from the same run with the same metallurgical properties.

2. Quite true - But then again - There are somethings that you just don't have a choice in. I have no idea if the diesel fuel in my truck came from Texas, Alaska, or Iran. IF I had a choice I'd pay more for the USA diesel, and I'm retired and don't have a bunch of money to throw around.

3. Are YOU willing to work for 75 CENTS A WEEK?
Are your friends?
Willing to be thrown in prison for *malingering* if you're sick?
How about housing - You willing to live in THE apartment that the company tells you you're going to live in?
Oh Yeah - The unions are really killing us.
Sure, they're causing prices to be higher here.
But when the jobs all dry up here because they're in Asia your grand kids will get to live the $.75/week lifestyle -
And they'd best like it!

I spent several years working in the PRC and the ROC.
I buy *Made In The USA* or *Made In Taiwan* over *Made In China* whenever I have a choice.
It's not a society that doesn't just allow guns that you're supporting when you choose *Made In China* to save a buck!

Default marvin ....

i did check out the sturdy gun safe on line .
one heck of a safe made in usa with heavy gauge steel , but pricy .
pretty well out of my budget

these are very limited capacity safes if you get the fire lined models . also did you see the list of add on's ? ! all kinds of stainless liners and extra fire proofing etc .
pretty quick a safe initially costing $1800 or so ends up being way over $2500

their vids are interesting and informative ..... and a lot of the safes weigh nearly 1000 lbs which kind of knocks out out also for me cause i was trying to stay under that weight .....so one loaded would weigh 1000-12000 lbs.

Default deadeye ...

thanks and your points are well taken .

as i said i do not like supporting those people in china . there are ALSO one whale of a lot of things going on here in our country i dont support . the way we handle immigration , the balance of our national budget , and believe it fair to say the police have far more power than needed in a lot of instances .
but , like you and most else, i believe it is the most free place to live on earth .
and places like wal mart pay dept managers about $9 bucks an hour in most places .... but like most else , i shop some wal mart products too.

we are a long way from perfect but are better off than most any other cultures.
but when a product nearly doubles in price .....well i am happy for you that price isnt that much of an issue. i also buy american when i can

ALSO do not forget , we , read that usa again , sell OUR products overseas by the boatloads ! what would happen to a lot of OUR workers IF the global economy didnt come in to play on a daily basis ?? !!

gives one something to ponder

sorry about the rant but i DO basically agree with you . with all this said i will try to buy the gun safe which fits my budget and has the best features with the less $ spent

rock&roll- check a line of safes by the name of zanotti armor. they come apart so weight doesn't have to be an issue. the last one i bought was less than most of the big names for the same size and quality of protection. they are also made here.

If you have enough guns that you require a gun safe, that probably means that in the future you will be collecting more. More guns will drive up the total value of you collection. The higher that value of your collection, the better quality safe you would want to secure them in. I would take a hard look at Liberty. They might be more expensive initially, but if someone tries just once to break into it, they will take care of you no questions asked. If you house burns, they will take care of you. There are so many other things to think about other than just the initial price. Keep that in mind.

I bought a steelwater gun safe last year and they delivered it within a week. My son also bought one and he feels it is a very good quality safe. His has a 2 hr fire guarantee and mine has a one hour. We both feel that they are very good. And if a thief can get into them, well they deserve what is inside.

Default thanks to ....

all who provided info .

have ran into an other safe worth looking at .

it is hollon gun safes. the two models i am looking at are in the $1400 range for a 22 gun model and about $1750 for the 36 gun model . about the only difference is the weight , 650 lbs vs 850 lbs for the larger model and the bigger one is a bit wider .
both are built out of 9 guage steel with the door having an added re-inforcement sheet of steel to make it 3 guage !

these are an imported safe i believe but with these specs are certainly worth a hard look

Default rags and vic....

thanks for the referal to johnson.

probably walked by him at the 1500 a few times

i called and told him the size safe i needed . i am only a few miles from him ..... he would take 5- 6 weeks to build and will deliver it IN HOUSE for $125 !

the fire rating is impressive on his safes and i can get 7 or 12 gauge steel . i will go for the 7 gauge , if after having my flooring checked , it will handle it . there is a 250 lb. difference in the same size safe between 7 and 10 gauge steel
PLUS i would be buying local which is kinda neat !!

thanks again

Browning and other companies put their logo on Liberty Safes, an American company.
I have two of them and they are top of the line. Bar none.
The other guys are right on, you get what you pay for. If I have a problem, my guy is local.

Bumping this thread as I too am looking at a Steel Water safe. Talked to one of the owners (the guy in their videos) and was very nice and helpful. Anyone else have experience with their safes?

they seem very affordable and very durable. Only concern I have is whether to go with digital or dial lock. He says their digital is the best on the market and is better to have than the dial. I was surprised. Was thinking the digital might be more apt to fail or malfunction.

anyone own one or looking at one?

Buy a Liberty. They have already proven themselves to be the premier safe maker.

There is another thread about electronic or mechanical not long ago with most siding toward mechanical.

I contracted seawater about a month ago to see if they would offer the EMP proof lock, I figured if I had a problem with the electronic lock I could still get into the safe, anyway they said they were not going to offer it until it has proven it's reliability.

I have been looking at their 39 gun safe but the curbside delivery has me worried, not sure if I can get it up the hill and down my 500foot drive then around the field to the basement walkout.

Their safe looks good for the money.

Don't want to change the direction of this Post.
Have you looked at craigslist in your area? My find some reduced prices on used safes.

Default wow ! this is old info !....

i didnt end up going with steel water . bought a johnson safe made by jeff jonhson just a few miles from where live .
it is 8 gauge , i believe , with a good fire rating . the steel in it is the thickness of 2 quarters & 1 dime ( on edge )
key point in a safe is the door . the video of them trying to tear into the steelwater safe is interesting , but i dont believe they could even do have the damange to the safe i own in 3 tines the time !
you might get on line and check out johnson safes and try yo find a like built one nearer you .... mr johnson goes on a regular basis to the indy 15000 show also

If that 1800 degree rating is anything like the Mha ratings they put on their rechargable batteries, or the Lumen ratings they put on their LED flashlights I'd be real concerned.

Default bad keypads, customer service

Steelwater Safes doesn't support it's products & for incomprehensible reasons, misrepresents the content of my communications asking for support as being profane, manufacturing an excuse not only to not provide support but also for being extremely rude, condescending & ultimately hanging up on me every time I called & tried to be heard.
The Steelwater keypads fail when the batteries run out. twice this has happened to me.The 1st time they arranged for a lcoksmith to change it.
It worked until Dec.2024 when the battery ran out again. The lights came on but the keypad didn't work.So I changed the battery, which is the recommended step when this happens and the battery has been in for a long time. But after changing it,the lights didn't even come on anymore. So i wrote them an Email CONTAINING NO PROFANITY,which was ignored. So i called for support & the above described "conversations" transpired.
The company rep on the phone characterized my email as being profane and name calling, even read it back to me and hung up when I tired to respond. so I checked my email in my sent messages and it contains NONE of the Language the person claimed it did. My email was matter of fact, stated my problem and asked for help and was rejected as were all of my phone calls.

I bought a safe last year, and I went with Zanotti in Iowa. Not a fire rated unit, but a quality unit. Modular construction that goes together perfectly in 30 minutes.

I would not touch a Chinese safe. Who backs up the warranty, Mutual of Beijing?

I recommend a mechanical Sargent and Greenleaf lock. Skip the pushbutton stuff. Zanotti will not use a pushbutton lock.

Remember " The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten."

If you must have a Chinese safe go to Tractor Supply. At least you have an American National company to gripe to

I own 5 Champion safes. I wanted to bring up some figures for your consideration.

The red safe is a Triumph-40. The Triumph series is the second line in the Champion safes. It is fire rated for 90 minutes before a 1650 degree Fahrenheit fire will bring the interior temperature up to 349 degrees F. According to the company literature for this safe, paper and documents will char at 405 degrees. It weighs 1135 pounds. The steel rods in the door are 1 1/2" thick.

The safe in the background is a Crown-30. The Crown series is the top of the line for Champion. It is fire rated for 105 minutes before a 1500 degree F. fire will bring the interior temperature up to 344 degrees F. This safe also has 1 1/2" thick rods in the door.

I just went down to the basement and checked out these statistics right from the safes. And remember, I've never heard anybody say, "I wish would have bought a smaller safe."

While I don't disagree, many of us don't have an extra $500+ for that, IMO.

I'm shopping for an additional safe myself, but my budget is in the $1K-1200 range.

Smash & grab is my biggest concern due to where I live (rural area).

Golddollar, the only problem I see with your is that it is empty! BTW, how does the hang able option on the door work for you?

Believe me, it didn't stay empty long!

I haven't used the pouches on the door. I've been using aftermarket handgun wire racks. I guess that's just personal preference.

I like the wire racks too. Much less contact to the gun than the pouches.
