45 ACP SLIDE SWAP
I have a Springfield full size 45 that I bought with a Marvel 22 conversion kit on it. I would like to be able to put it back to the way it was new, but I cannot find a Springfield slide (stainless).
I found an officers compact slide assembly. I was told that the slide would work on a full sized 45. I really do not think that it will.
Anyone out there know if it will work?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Don't know if it will work ,but the dust cover on a full size is about 1/4 inch longer than a commander or officers sized frame.

The answer is maybe. You can try the slide for fit and function, and if both the slide and frame are completely stock it might just work. It is possible some fitting may be necessary, though.

1911s are fitted.
The safe way is to send the gun without the conversion unit back to Springfield and have a new slide factory fitted, or find a qualified 1911 gunsmith with the parts and skill.
For every story of a random part being thrown into a 1911 and working OK, there are two tales of woe.

A friend gunsmith did this for my 70 series Colt. I bought this gun new and had him make a bulls eye gun out of it. You have to shoot light loads or you could sheer the Bomar rib off. He fitted the barrel to the slide and the slide to the frame. I have two complete uppers and have to keep it separate. I now have the best of both worlds. Don

You know, they used to come in a barrel and you picked out what you needed. That was called mil-spec, the parts interchanged. I'm beginning to see the problem.

Thanks for the replies.
It appears that it may not fit. The suggestion to get in touch with Springfield Armory and have a factory slide put on it may be the best bet.
As mentioned they used to be all mail spec.

My experience is a little different: too long a tale to tell what happened to my first slide, but I got another and sent it off to have low Bo-Mar's fittted. Loved it. Then I wanted night sights. Got another slide, had Trijicons fitted, and now have two slides completely interchangable (only one barrel and bushing, though). I didn't have the slides fitted, as I wanted a little slop to improve combat reliability. Either slide shoots groups about ten times smaller than the accuracy needed in a combat weapon, unless you want to sight it in for 100 yards (yeah, I've done that, too).

you need to find the Wilson Combat 1911 smithing vids ... You will at the very least become knowledgeable in how its done right. If your gifted with BOTH the patience and ability, perhaps even fit a slide yourself. This isnt a "my first project" kind of endeavor.

From what I have read of the Marvel conversion units (I have never seen one) those who got usually left them in place rather than using it like the Ceiner and swapping it back and forth.
Yes, even a manufacturer's slide is not a drop in part. I found a spare slide for my Colt Mark IV Series 70, small letters, my original had big letters. I had to use lapping compound to get the second slide to fit.
