I had (well still have, and it works) one of the first generation Kindle Fires. Retired that one and replaced it with a waterproof Kindle two or three years ago. My collection of books was becoming unmanageable, so I determined not to buy any more physical books due to lack of room for them. It was either that or get a bigger house with a dedicated library. The Kindle is slightly more affordable.

I have a app on my phone called Cool Reader and have several books on it for emergencies. Mostly I have a a book with me at all times when I am out and about. I have pared my collection down to 1000 or so books at home. Most I have read multiple times and will do so again before I am gone. As was said above, they don't run out of battery and if cared for last as long as I will. I found quite a few 100 year old books in the stuff boxed up in various closets and the garage here at Mom's house. Going to have a special shelf for those when I turn the living room into a home library after Mom is gone.

I've been reading on a Kindle for about as long as they have been available.I'm on my 4th or 5th one and my wife is on her 3rd. What I like is buying series of mysteries, and adding to as new ones become available. After 10-12 years I go back and re-read them. I something over 500 titles in my Kindle library.

I don't have a Kindle but I use the Kindle app on my tablet and have a boat load of books in my library including the 4th edition of the Standard Catalog of S&W. When the 5th edition becomes available, I'll down load it as well.

I think I am on #5 and this one is 5 or 6 years old. One thing I have not seen mentioned is the necessity to run your settings app often. I go to power and whatever they call storage and make sure I turn off Alexa and all things associated with it. Amazon turns it back on every couple of months with updates. Just maintenance stuff that needs doing.
As far as books go, I have sold off and replaced almost everything with a value over $100. I have books from both parents and all 4 grandparents.
It is interesting to see what they held important.

My gf absolutely swears by hers, esp. as she finds reading in bed helps her to fall asleep. She has an older 2nd generation model which allows expandable storage (an outdated concept these days, it seems). She uses the ePub reader app on it, which opens all formats including Amazon's.
She got one for her late mother several years ago and it literally helped to keep her alive as her eyesight deteriorated as she was a retired academic and a voracious reader.

If you have a library card, you can usually use it to check out books to your Kindle.
If you are military or retired, you can download free books through the MWR library.
I've been reminded more than once that I am a cheap-skate.
