You should be here this weekend. There's a massive street rod show in Pigeon Forge. The locals, me included, know to stay off the main strip because of the massive traffic tie-up's. My neighbor hosts the Dixie Gas Swap Meet...anything antique that was ever sold in a gas station...and his vendor area is already swamped. Come on down!

A couple years ago my cuz showed up at work with this car, it was a little different but had a full house flathead engine which really caught my attention. I've always loved the sound of a worked up flathead and like to working on stuff. I bought the car from him and went about rebuilding the suspension, some other cosmetic stuff. I'm in the middle of a complete re-wire currently and plan to have it back on the road for summer. Its still got the old tube radio in it, everything works. Me and the car are the same age...

Since i've been doing auto body repair & painting for the past 35+ years as well as custom painting and building street rods and drag cars, I still have the itch.
Cars so far has been a 35 Chevy Coupe, 36 Desoto 5/window Coupe, 48 Chevy Sedan Delivery, 48 Chevy Coupe, 33 Plymouth 3/window Coupe as well as others.
This was the one I stuck with.
1935 Chrysler 5/window Coupe, all Chevy power, set up for 1/8mile run but driven on the street. Run the street at 30mph in idle, runs only on raceing fuel.

I have posted this picture before but, it fit this thread. Couldn't afford any "cool" cars when I was young so I set about to put together a small collection. The '43 jeep was an impulse purchase : )

i had a 65 vette. wish i had it back. ive been looking at buying something new lately. the new shelbys look pretty hot. ive seen the 2012 in the 40k range. or a late 90s early 2k vette for well under 20k. problem is only 2 seats when i have 2 small kids. we do have a family car for long hauls but it would be nice to have 4 seats. not really interested in older muscle, fully restored costs too much and i dont have the time energy or money for a shop restoration and my wife would not be on board with a garage full of not running car for the next few yers

I'd sure like to see a pic or two of the flathead.

I was always more into big bore sport cars, raced 427 Cobras and 427 Corvettes in SCCA A Production in the late 1960s through 1970s, drove them on the street as primary drivers, too. Had several Shelby GT-500s ('67 fastbacks with the dual quads on a 428, two '68 KR convertibles with 428CJ engines that had been breathed on by Carrol - hotter cam, 427 mid-riser heads - both were actually yellow 4-speed cars, no paint code, only three yellow KR convertibles were built, 2 with 4-speeds, one with a C-6). I don't really consider any of them "hot rods," though. To me, a hot rod is a pre-war car which has been worked over. The only one I had back then was a Bucket T roadster that I built from the ground up with a new chassis, using a trashed out T body shell (of which little original was left after fixing/rebuilding the shell and the wood internal supports), but what really set it apart was the engine and drive train. Ford 9" rear with a Detroit Locker, Ford Nascar close ratio 4-speed, and - drum roll, please - a Ford 427 SOHC engine. That thing was absolutely NASTY! Didn't handle at all, stopping was always, well, questionable, but man, could it move (in a more or less stright line, anyway)! Visually, the entire car was dominated by that engine, it almost looked like Ed Roth built it to inspire one of his Rat Fink T-shirts. Wish I could find pics of some of my old rides, but they disappeared over the years and many moves, but the memories are as fresh as if it was yesterday (or maybe last week). Were I to build a T Bucket today, I wouldn't go quite that wild (finding a cammer Ford would probably be impossible, anyway), but one of those 502" (or bigger) Chevy crate engines would be tempting. Good luck with working up your new ride, I forecast a lot of fun for you.

Thanks for all the pics and ideas. The search goes on, I'm wavering between vettes and rat rods and have looked at a couple. One of the problems is where I live, not a lot of these kinds of cars available and almost everything has rust/rot issues. I've been looking at ebay and there's stuff on there I'd buy in a heartbeat but the cost of having a vehicle trucked up here to me is quite high. So, I'll keep feeding the hot rod fund and watching craig's list and the local sites and papers, something will come along. In the mean time, keep the pics coming!!

Have you heard of Factory Five Racing in Wareham? We have bought two of their car kits. They sell you the body and frame and you come up with the running gear and make it as simple or as elaborate as you want. Hubby has had a big time building both.
Now if he would just let me drive them...

Too many people get caught up in restoring old 'Vettes. They're only original once! I found a '64 coupe that had been a drag racer in the '70s. No motor or trans , for $3500. Flared , tubbed , sub-frame out back with a 12-bolt solid axle. It sat for years , and is a bit rough. The bodywork was very well done. It's far too gone for restoration , so it's gonna be a hot rod.

I don't have a new pic with the fresh Windvail Blue paint job, but here's a pic of my daily driver:
And here's what's under the hood:
I love exploring and slow trail ridin' through the woods (or Moab, UT or the Rubicon, etc.) with my little Jeep, but I have to admit, I also love punching the throttle on the street! Closest thing I have to a hot rod.

I found what I was looking for!!!
And I wasn't even looking for it. It's not a street rod or a Vette, it's a '65 Plymouth Barracuda. It's a turn key driver with some superficial exterior rust but it's solid underneath, has a completely rebuilt brake system, a nicely freshened interior, a '74 318 with a few performance upgrades, and a Torqueflight 727 auto. Plus, the price is right so I'll have the money to work on it right away.
I'm envisioning a pseudo-bonneville rat racer/rod kind of thing - lowered with a nice rake, 16" or 17" rims with Moon spun aluminum wheel covers and lower profile tires, exhaust exiting in front of the rear wheels, and maybe black suede paint leaving some of the smaller dings and rust spots to help with the rat effect. Nothing too drastic, just keep it simple and easy, and since it's safe and solid I'll be able to drive it while I'm working on it.
Here's some pics. Hope you guys can see what I see!
