Default FFL Transfers Question

How long does it normally take for an FFL dealer to process a gun once received from the seller I won it off of on Gunbroker and then release it to me? I won an S&W 27-2 and it was delivered to the shop according to the Post Office last Thursday and still no word to me from the gunshop. is this normal?

I had one shop that would call me and tell me my gun was in. The one I use now leaves it up to the buyer to check with him to see if a gun has come in. The guy that used to call me was 5 blocks from my house. He retired and the guy I use now is 15 miles away.

Welcome to the Forum.
There is no proper answer for your question because everyone does their Biz differently.
Why not call the FFL dealer and talk to him directly?
Good Luck

Can't speak for all,,
But unwrap it, lookover the paper work, log it into the book,,call the customer to come and pick it up.
The shop isn't putting it out for sale,,just being a middle-man & handling the transfer.
He doesn't have to inspect it for any reason, clean it, check functioning (play with it), look up values, ect.
That's for you to do.

Maybe an hour's worth of shop time the way they figure things these days.
...About 20minutes if I was to make a cup of coffee in the middle of it.

None of the NICS or 4473 stuff is done till you get there and accept it.

Give the shop a call,,maybe it's just sitting there and someone thinks you've been notified..

Well, as far as logging it in to his books when it arrives, here's what ATF has to say:

Q: How much time does a dealer have to record acquisitions and dispositions of firearms in his or her “bound book?”

Generally, licensees have to enter the acquisition or purchase of a firearm by the close of the next business day after the acquisition or purchase and shall record sales or other dispositions within 7 days.

However, if commercial records containing the required information are available for inspection and are separate from other commercial documents, dealers have 7 days from the time of receipt to record the receipt in the “bound book.”

Call your local FFL or go there in person.

My local FFL is just too busy to call people when guns arrive even if you ordered it from him. I have know him forever and he will not call me. He is on the phone and dealing with customers all day.

Well I called the shop on Friday and asked if I could come pick the gun up then but the guy on the phone said he couldn't find the gun and that the Post Office might still have it (even though the USPS tracking number on there website said it had been delivered Thursday morning). So I called the Post Office in that town on Saturday and they said that the package had been delivered and they even gave me the name of the person that signed for it. So some friends and I stopped in to the shop Saturday and told them about our findings and they at first acted like the gun wasn't there and then when I said the name who signed for it then one guy said, "it hasn't been received yet so I can't release it to you" then something about ATF paperwork and that it can take a few days. And here it is Monday and still no phone call. This is really making me mad. Has anyone else experienced that?

I do not know MN law but surely there is a waiting period and background check with forms you must complete. That is a different issue than "if, when, they received it" Speak with the OWNER.

LGS here takes all of maybe 10 minutes to do the work.
Only delay might be calling the state background check line if they're swamped, like on gun show days.

In MN I just have to have a Permit to Purchase from the Police chief and then do the instant backround check at the shop and I can walk out the door with the handgun.

Sounds to me like BS. When you finally get your gun, next time use another dealer.

Has anyone used Cabela's for FFL transfers? Maybe I should have just tried them.

You bet your Bippy you're getting the run around! I work for an LGS and he could have checked the gun in while you waited. My LGS books the gun in and calls the customer.

My LGS prefers to NOT open the package unless he runs out of his regulated time. He lets the customer open so there is no question as to how the gun was packaged/received.

I would be at your gun shop first thing in the AM when they open and make a major ruckus!!

Good Luck

That sounds like a crock. Is this a huge gun shop, or what? I can't imagine that they have that many guns to "check in".

I did ship a gun from one Cabela's to another Cabela's and it was surprising how long it took. But, they handle a very large volume of guns and were understaffed.

A couple of questions....

Did you pre-arrange the transfer with the dealer prior to purchase? Did he ok it prior to you purchasing the firearm, or did you purchase the firearm from wherever you purchased it from and then have to find a transfer dealer?

Is this a model of a new firearm that he has in stock on his shelves currently? Some dealers are reluctant to transfer new guns, especially when it's the same model that they sell and it comes out cheaper ordering somewhere else even after paying the transfer fee.

It's best to check some reviews on the FFL to see how smoothly transfers have gone for others before committing to a transfer through one that you've not had personal experience with and know their method of operations. Why, this goes not just for FFL's, but for car services and just about any kind of service company I suppose! Usually some dealers that don't want to do transfers will price their transfers well above the average going rate, or may even state on their walls (I've seen it) that they will not transfer in any new firearm that they currently have in stock or can order.

I'd try to hunt a full service FFL that has a reasonable (yet might not be the lowest, but has the least amount of hassle to the customer) transfer rate (both in and out) with some good reviews.

Tell him you are coming to pick up your gun.

Read him the ATF rule and ask him if he'd like to call THEM and tell THEM he hasn't had the time to log the gun.

He is an idiot.

Gun was received in Thursday. Logged in on Friday. Should have called Saturday but the FFL I use is open 10-6 Tues through Sat. Saturday is busy, every week. Next business day is Tuesday. Go on over tomorrow and say "Hey." They might just remember they have a gun for you before you ask. Joe

It's not a big shop so I can't imagine they have tons of guns to check in but I did get a call earlier this evening that I could come pick it up. Thank God! I'll post pictures of the new baby when I get the chance.

I must have the best transfer agent on the planet. After I notify him I've won an auction he faxes his FFL to seller, usually within minutes after getting my email. Then he confirms by email that the FFL was faxed. When the package arrives he checks in the gun and calls me right away. On my answering machine is "Your package has arrived." When I go to his place of business I fill out the form then he immediately calls it in. 5 minutes maximum. I'm in and out of there in 10 minutes. $15 total cost.

City Gun and Pawn
Calera, Ala.

If you live around Birmingham, he is great to deal with.

I don't know if you can do this where you live but I use pawn shops to do my transfers. Gun stores here charge a lot of money to do a transfer like $65. Pawn shops charge $30 for everything. Gun shops here don't like to do transfers because they want you to buy the gun from them. Don
