Help on value and dates of two boxes, no guns
Any box collector experts?
Not sure where to post this so please move if needed.
A Red non picture box marked 38 SW Terrier. Has metal corners
Inside lid in English and Spanish so I am guessing this is when SW and Bangor Punta where together?? I am gonna say around 1953????
Grease pencil serial # on bottom 61002
This one is confusing to me looking in the SC of SW. I do not know if it is I or J frame and there is so many variations.
Second Box:
Gold and blue picture. Serial # on bottom c-186308, Marked 38 MP sq butt 4"
I am guessing 1948-1951??
Both are in VG+ condition and have a cleaning rod, no brush.
I can take pics if that helps.
Can the dates be verified and approximate value ??
Thanks

The cleaning rods add a bunch of value. They were pretty much the same between models with the same length barrel.
I'm going to guess the red box will be hard to sell, but its worth more if you can find someone who needs it. Maybe $100. The M&P box is more common and depending on condition, probably $75.
The problem both have is they're not as scarce or as highly sought after as some other models. But unless you're starving, there's also no reason to sell them cheap.

I'm just guessing you have them right. Not far off on the gold box anyway. The red one doesn't really matter much because its not in much demand. But if someone wants it, they need to pay.

I would think that your date guesstimates are fairly close. There is no connection between the Spanish in the cover and the Bangor Punta era. BP owned the company from around 1965 to about 1984. Your boxes are not model marked so they date to before 1957-1958 when the government required S&W to assign model numbers to their guns.
A terrier in the 61,000 range would be an I or improved I frame.
I think that the prices received might be a little lower than what Dick quoted unless someone reallllly neeeds one of the boxes. For someone like me that buys boxes to hopefully find a gun for some day typically won't pay that much for something to put in inventory. I usually find boxes for $25 to $50 unless it is for somehting really special or unusual.

Good info on the boxes above and I agree based on the vintage/era of the serial numbers you listed.......as to values, the M&P being fairly common,, though yours is an early one, it still runs in the $75 plus range if mint shape, and the last 'plain' red boxes we sold at the OGCA, we got $75 each for them..as noted above, if someone really needs that box, ( has a gun for it, OR even the original one), don't say it cannot happen, we've seen it over the years, a number of times, the gun and box, get reunited.....
an auction would be possibly a way to get a bit higher price, only need TWO folks both wanting the same thing to drive up the bidding.......
