I've been the family "gun guy" for 30 years and have been asked to teach a lot of people to shoot, it's become a rite of passage for most of my nieces and nephews, as well as wives and daughters of co-workers, etc. I prefer teaching the women.......they listen! No macho BS, they ask pertinent questions, focus on what you're telling them, and generally apply it well.
Hillbilly's right about teaching at HER pace, everyone's a little different, some already know the basics, others are a blank sheet of paper. I generally start off with a discussion of the different action types, trigger actions, and safeties. They handle a variety of (unloaded!) weapons before they ever see any ammunition, and do a fair amount of dry-firing to get them used to the feel of the trigger. I generally have them take a step toward the target, raise the gun with both hands, hold it firmly, and fire from about five yards to start, then back off as their mechanics come together. Before long they're shooting 38's and 45's from 15 yards and making center hits with regularity. The grins come early and often. I also like reactive targets........balloons, soda cans, bowling pins, whatever you have handy.
Do your best to make it fun...............because it is! My favorite student of late was a delightful 70-year old (who looked younger than me) who had never shot a gun before in her life, she had always had men around to protect her. Now that she's on her own she decided she needed to learn how, and a friend sent her to me. She's already an accomplished beginner, and
begging for more range time. I think I'll give her a call today, and see if she is ready to outshoot me!
