Is it a good idea to oil a gun and store it in wax paper?

Am not sure why you would want to do that, but I can't imagine it would harm anything. I would much prefer plastic sheeting or maybe a plastic zip-lock storage bag over wax paper, with a moisture absorbing silica gel packet or some VPI paper in the same bag. Or wax the gun as many do.
Actually I think it could be a great Idea. But, PM me with your address and I'll send you some sheets of S&W paper.

I think polyethylene plastic does not go well with blued metal.

PE never did any harm to mine, and that's what I use for storage, along with VPI.

The only time I use waxed paper is after I have treated a gun with RIG Universal Grease for long term storage. After the waxed paper I then wrap it in Aluminum Foil and it is then good for a long long time. Never had any issues with it.

Polyethylene once corroded the part of the cylinder of my first gun, a nickel Model 19, I think, that was lying on the plastic.
