Revolver storage questions…

I just wipe the things down with an oily rag when cleaning and have dessicant bages that get recharged/rotated as needed. Have never had any problems for things in "long term" storage, but I also run the AC in the summer so the humidity in the house never gets that high.

Something to note, the stainless used for firearms is not the same as the stuff used for many other things and can be more of a problem than other finishes. The alloy used needs to be able to take the punishment of being fired and not crack/break, which means it will often not be as ressistant to corrosion, especially when it comes to an individuals sweat.

I Spray mine with Barricade, wipe them down with a silicone cloth, then put them in a silicone gun sock. I stack them in the safe and have never had an issue. Even when I was in Maine with high humidity in the summer they were fine.

I'm here in central Virginia, less than a mile from the James River, and even closer than that to a pretty good sized creek that runs into it. Nothing special here for humidity I suppose, but a long way from Arizona.

I've never had a problem with a gun rusting, except once when I grabbed a couple with sweaty hands when moving. Those rusted before we got where we were going. No damage I could see, it just wiped off, but it made my hair stand up for a few seconds.

I clean mine after I get back from the range. Back when I hunted I cleaned those at the end of the season. These days I keep my handguns waxed with Ren Wax, but I really do that as a way to "fool with them" than I do because I worry about rust. I just like to wax them really. Then I keep them in silicone "gun socks" but I've used just plain old cotton socks in the past. They worked just as well as far as I could tell. I've also stored them in leather holsters and have never seen any harm.

I remember my Grandfather's Parker and Fox shotguns. He used them for duck and goose hunting out on the Bay, and for everything else from bunnies to bucks. He wiped them off with an oily rag after cleaning. I never saw rust on his guns. Wear yes. Rust? Never.

Boot Socks

I wipe my guns down with a cotton cloth to remove fingerprints , etc. This is important . Cotton , not synthetic cloths . Then I wipe them down with whatever gun lube I have on hand . They go in the safe which has a cup filled with silica gel desiccant . No rust issues .

Long ago an OLD collector/gunsmith advised me to use wool boot socks for storage and transporting to shows.

I just wipe them off and store them in either gun rugs, original cardboard boxes, original plastic cases, open rack in the gun safe. Right now there are at least half a dozen that need cleaned. No rust in almost 50 years. The gun safe was in the basement of my Pittsburgh home for 8 years with no ill effects. Anything extra you do is just further insurance.

My safe gets opened often enough not to allow moisture to collect on anything...An air conditioned house is already dehumidified so the simple act of opening the safe circulates dry air...All my guns are RenWaxed, I don't like oil on the outside surfaces...The Goldenrod suggested by others is a good idea, and you can accomplish the same thing by burning a 75 or 100 watt incandescent light at the bottom of your safe...A mechanic's drop light will work, just watch where the hot surface contacts...That drives moist air up and out the lift hole in the top of the safe...

Here's a pic of the inside of mine...I store my guns in silicone treated socks...I have zero rust problems......Ben
