The "Jack Reacher" thread got me thinking.

Has anyone else here read or remember the "Mack Bolan" series of paperbacks from the 1970's & early '80's?
I remember as a kid my dad read these books and later in life I began reading them. Terrific writing by author Don Pendalton. If you don't know Bolan was a former special forces soldier that took on a one-man crusade against mafia guys upon returning home from Viet Nam.
Bolans main weapon of choice was a .44 automag with a Beretta 92 9mm as back up, of course he employed many others weapons as well.

To this day I cannot understand why this series was never adapted into a movie after all these years. If handled correctly here is a tremendous resource of adventure entertainment......I don't get it:confused:

I've often felt that the "Rambo" and all the Norris films were heavily inspired by "Mack Bolan". Had to be since Bolan pre-dated "Rambo" & the rest by at least 10 years. Many simularities but Bolan was the original animal, and a much more interesting charactor.

I remember around 1970 my dad reading the very first book in the Bolan series titled: "The Executioner: War Against The Mafia".

Are you listening hollywood?:D

I remember reading them back in the 70's. I didn't think the author knew that much about weapons. A 460 Weatherby for a sniper rifle? Over time I figured that there were at least three different writers. They were fun to read at first and then they got to be pretty much the same.

My dad had also read and collected them and later my brother and I both went through them and the later Able Team and Phoenix Force books. Enjoyed them very much at the time, but looking back they were very "simple" and formulaic. But good times. I bought an Automag a few years ago because of Mack, but I don't have to cut down 7.62 Nato brass to make ammo--thank you Starline!

I used to read the Executioner books back in the seventies, back then I always had a paperback stuck in my back pocket and read all the time. As long as we're on the subject, how about the "Sam Durell" assignment series, anyone remember them? Sam was quite a bad*** too! I read about all of them back in the day, probably even more so than I did the Executioner books.

"Live large." ;)

IIRC his sniper weapon of choice was a Weatherby in .458 Win Mag?

Mac Bolan... Ace of Aces...

Hi:
I recall "Mack Bolan" series books. Enjoyed reading them. IIRC "Mack's" first sniper rifle was a Marlin Lever Action Rifle in .444 Magnum Caliber. Perhaps this was the first book. I remember "Mack" was sighting the rifle at a City Dump Area but had to leave as a worker was coming over to inquire what "Mack" was doing.

Was a huge fan of the series, but as was pointed out earlier, they sorta were the same towards the end of my involvement.

I too have thought of them in many years.

I still have the entire "War Against the Mafia" series packed away in the attic. The only parts that I didn't like involved "turkey meat."

His world tour towards the end of the series was an interesting change of scenery. I also liked his war wagon.

Good books for the times. After Pendelton retired and Golden Eagle took over, they became much more formulaic.

I haven't thought about them in years.

Wasn't that Inspector Callahan's choice in "Dirty Harry" movie ?

Had to look it up...:o

Inspector Calahan supposedly used an M70 in .458 Win Mag.

Mack might have used a .460 Weatherby. Woulda been more his style, I think. That was what, 40 years ago? :D

Now I gotta go search. Thanks a lot. ;)

Iread them when I was in high school I thought they were pretty neat and if I recall he also used a Marlin 444

I remember reading the Mack Bolan series back in the day. I enjoyed them. I read them for the enjoyment. Never gave much thought to the weapons he used. I'll have to check out Amazon and see if I can find them to reread.

I remember!! I read them too, had totally forgotten. I too remember they got to be about the same toward the end. I read more back then, and did not spend so much time on this forum!

I read most of them back in the day and found them very entertaining. Yeah, some of the weapon choices showed a lack of realism, but the weapons and their suitability weren't the draw. Don could draw you into the story and he certainly painted vivid word pictures of the action, characters and generally good guy mayhem.

Mack Bolan, The Executioner..Good lord, I'm not alone...

Who was that other one, that pumped out a book a month...Travis McGee??? The fellow that lived in Florida, and drove a old Rolls Royce, but cut up and made into a truck? I think I read everyone of those books when they came out.
