Default LGS Story-Panic Buying

I stopped at my favorite LGS yesterday. Wow, the place was nearly picked-clean of any centerfire new or used gun capable of holding a magazine bigger than ten rounds.

The owner had received his holiday shipment of various AR platform guns on Wednesday. He had over twenty on Friday morning. By noon on Saturday they had sold them all and have standing orders for dozens more if they can get them. He also sold all the .223 and 9MM ammo and had only a few rounds of .22 LR.

As for handguns, every Glock, Springfield XD, S&W M&P and Taurus 9MM or .40 S&W was gone too. Nothing left but single stack .45 ACP and .380's. All his used .44 Magnum revolvers, and he had nearly a dozen on Wednesday, were also gone.

The PA instant check system "PICS" was down for part of the day on Saturday or he probably would have sold out of some other things too.

Now he has no inventory of the hot button items and no way to buy any since all the distributors have shipped their stock.
Said it is OK to sell a ton of guns as sales equal money, but the panic rush Friday immediately after the tragedy put him off a bit. People were upset that they couldn't buy three or four AR's and 20,000 rounds of ammo.

My work days at the LGS where I'm at p/t are M,T and W. About to leave for work and we were almost picked clean yesterday. Most distributors starting to show '0' for available inventory.

Today will be the start of seeing people somewhat angry and PO'ed for not being able to get what they want.
Somehow I've seen that my advice that they should have bought last week does not seem well received.

And then there's the individuals that want a total and complete education on AR's from me or one of the other sales guys - while the store fills to capacity and the phone rings continuously . It'll be a fun day.

It is a similar story at my lgs. I didn't go there, but called them on the phone yesterday. Also even online. Buds Gun Shop site is intermittently down and Lucky Gunner doesn't even have any AR ammo in stock, it is crazy. And good luck trying to find a 30 round magazine online.

I'm going to Cabelas this morning. It's a killer drive 2 miles down the street. They started their Christmas hours opening at 8 instead of 9. I'll be there at 8. I'm just looking for a shotgun sling.

Last year a Dicks opened up in lower NY its right off the thruway. Its a nice store but no guns or related things. I havent been back. I did go to another Dicks in NY, not much of interest, my wife found an expensive coat on the clearance rack for $20. She bought it its was new with tags etc, just 90% off.

All in all they dont have anything that I cant get someplace else, nothing to see here move along...

Are you kidding me!!! I walked into my LGS at 5pm (the close at 6) just out of curiosity. I had to triple park and then squeeze inside and its not a small store. Every employee was supper busy writing 2 sales while waiting to on the phone for a background check on a third. ARs were FLYING off the shelves along with Glocks and M&Ps. Ammo was low and sow were mags for the more popular stuff. The used semi auto gun case was only about 30% full but the used revolver case was holding strong with most of the guns still in there. From what I could tell all the surplus bolt action guns were still there along with all the lever and pump rifles. I walked around a bit, grabbed an empty surplus ammo can cause I needed one, one G19 mag and 2 Magpul 30 rnd mags.

It was complete pendemonium. Ive never seen that before, not even durring the 2008 and 2012 elections

A LGS near me had a used S&W M&P 15 that I talked to him about on Wednesday @ $650. On Friday I stopped by and the price had jumped to $800, FIRM. I asked why and he asked if I'd listened to the news. I hadn't at that point so that was the first I'd heard of the tragedy. I didn't buy but I expect the rifle did not last the weekend on his shelf.

Kinda along the same lines, I went to my local reloading store Saturday to get a new set of dies. Bob, told me they had done $27,000 in sales (@4:00 pm). Avg. for a "normal" Saturday is arond $2,000. Took me 30 minutes to check out and I filled out my own sales ticket. His primers, powder and cast buletts are going fast.

I've had people calling ME to see if I would sell this or that because they couldn't find one!

The only ARs left in my LGS are the $2k and up models. Anything $1500 or less is gone daddy gone.

They also had .50 cal ammo cans of 1k stripper clipped XM193 about 4 feet high, 5 feet deep, and 5 feet long...not any more. It was at a good price too, $430 bucks.

On Fri they had Colt LE6920s on sale for $1049. I was going to buy one at Walmart, but the LGS sale price was better so I went in.

It took me an hour and a half to buy that rifle! The store was packed, I had to park behind the building, which hardly anyone knows is a place to park, and the parking lot was jammed.

ARs were flying off the shelves, it was a sight. Four AR buyers in line ahead of me bought an AR, a case, as many P Mags as they could stuff into the case, and an ammo can of the XM193.

I was lucky, in that they held to their sales price, and I got the last Colt LE6920 they had.

Saturday, I went in again, that humongous pile of XM193 was gone, and replaced by .50 cal ammo cans of once fired reloads, the real stuff was gone, and they only had about 15 cans of the reloads left.

To the stores credit, they kept their sales prices on everything through the weekend.

What REALLY struck me on Fri and Sat was the numbers of non-shooters/first time gun buyers!! They were asking a million questions and buying up just about anything they ever even THOUGHT about buying before. The AR counter was swamped by folks buying ARs that had absolutely NO knowledge whatsoever about the platform. I had over an hour to listen to all manor of questions, wow. It looked like a tough day for the store clerks...

Same thing at the Kenner, La. show Sunday. Large crown. Black guns and ammo flying out the doors. Fox8 had a crew there doing interviews. I was the guy with the orange Barq's Root Beer cap.

Yeah, that is my thought. If I had REALLY wanted something along those lines I'd have bought in October. On second thought if I HAD bought in October I'd be selling now at the new prices.

Well well, that tells me something about CTD.

Of course, it's a free market..... But gouging is just plain mean. It's like buying up a whole front row of a Rolling Stones concert for $150 bucks and selling them for $1500.

I used to think my LGS had high prices, but they stuck to all of their sales prices and as-marked prices all through the weekend. That speaks volumes as to their ethics, and what they think of their local customers.

It's kind of a reversal, the brick-and-mortar store has to compete with online retailers and comes out ahead by being fair. Score one for the brick-and-mortar!

I probably ought not have sold my Saiga 12 to fund that Trapdoor and Krag. Oh well.

What really sucks is that now I have to get into shape. Pushing 40... old...getting a bit of a gut...and all the same I think that I am about to be forced to learn to be light infantry... I do not like that prospect at all.

Better get a flyer made up for Co A, 1 st Bn SC Volunteers "The Forlorn Hope" and hope that a couple old Marines crotchedy enough to want to be cadre are around.

It looks to me that for every politician who stands on his or her hind legs and says "no one needs an AR rifle or 30 round mags" there are about 10 or 20 folks proving them wrong.

Now all the big box retailers are pulling all semi-autos from the racks and the ammo too. Total Bravo Sierra.

One of my clients has a small gun shop that specializes in para military and modern sporting arms. Stopped in a little while ago.
His shelves and racks are bare except for some old Mosin-Nagants, a single used Ruger .40 cal carbine and a trio of yugo SKS's. He said last week he had over 25 AK/AR/FAL type rifles and a dozen Siaga 12 GA. conversions. All the inventory he ordered is now spoken for too. All .223, 7.62X39 and .308 ammo is gone, along with .38 Spl, .357 mag and 9MM.

What I want to know-where did all this money come from to buy this stuff right around Christmas! I'll bet there are a lot a families that won't have much under the tree unless they put the empty AR/AK and ammo crates there.

I dont know about you guys but here in Florida, there seemingly is a gun show every weekend SOMEWHERE within a short (hour or so) drive of my house. I went this past weekend just to kind of look around, eventually did buy something, but there was plenty of inventory of black guns.

I kind of kick myself for not buying an M&P 15 a couple months back when a LGS had a sale on them for like $700. Didnt think there would be this big run on them like this.

Just wait 12 months with the economy still struggling and see how many of those guns come up for sale.

I stopped in at my local gun shop to see if someone had traded in an older S&W wheelgun for a new EBR during the frenzy. Naw, no such luck.

There was one customer in the shop when I arrived and things were pretty laid back. The shelves were full as usual.

Had a nice chat with the young clerk about the Savage 99 in .250 Savage that he recently acquired.

The shop’s yellow Lab required petting before I left, but his tail wagging was about the most excitement I saw there.

I have been purchasing sh1at for this day for 8 years. Last purchase a month ago two AR lowers with all parts and another upper.

250 additional .45 rounds. Some more .223 and have it cached around in various places.

The time has come for all men to come to the aid of their Country.

I stopped at my LGS today just to get an idea of what was going on. No AR-15's on the shelf or 5.56/.223 ammo except for some tracer surplus@ $7.50 per box of 20. No 30rd.mags of any kind available. I did hear the owner tell someone on the phone they should be getting about 25 Rock River Arms AR's in next week. Right now it's like a license to print money on these things, although the shop has not been price gouging.

I've been to both of the LGS that I frequent over the past two days, and both have been swamped. Even during the middle of the day, on a weekday. They are selling everything they have, it seems, except revolvers....those aren't moving, or very few are selling. I don't have any long guns, and don't have any interest in them, but the majority of the people in there were buying the AR style rifles.

Thought I would add an AR 15 since the hoopla.
Drove over to a little East Texas town just to see
what kind of AR stock they had.
One lone Bushmaster XM15 NIB..that was it.
He was currently out of mags and all .223 ammo..(he had done a gunshow this past weekend).

A man was standing around and they said he'd been waitin
over an hour because they(dealer) could not get thru for the FBI background check.
Call volume was that heavy.

Just came back from a LGS where i picked up a few small things and every time a salesman got through for a background check it was like a small party!

Just home from the zoo that my LGS was today. VERY glad I have only one more workday there this week.

Got in a dozen CORE 15 AR's this morning. ALL gone by early afternoon. NICS website s-l-o-w due to overload.
Honestly, I'm so tired of talking about AR's with people who hardly know which end the bullet exits, I could puke.

Yep, tomorrow we'll be dealing with the folks that are irritable and angry because we don't have and can't get what they want.
No one seems amused at my proffered advice that they should have bought last week.

Hmmmm. Might be a good time to put my Bushmaster AR on the market. I've been worried that I wouldn't get what I paid for it because I bought at the height of Obamascare I. Now with Obamascare II about to start, I might even make a profit.

Or maybe I'll just sit on it and try to time the top of the market.

Lousy weather didn't seem to keep anyone away either. Call in took longest they can remember. The suppliers were so busy they weren't answering the phones for periods of time. It'll be interesting to see the numbers on all this activity when they come in.

And if nothing happens in about a year it will be interesting to see what people are selling their guns and ammunition for.

Just wait 12 months with the economy still struggling and see how many of those guns come up for sale.
That's when I may buy one..

I was at my LGS/range Monday, it was a mad house. Every AR style rifle was flying off the shelf with Golcks not far behind. As I was waiting to pay me range fees, some AR expert chewed my ear about the press and how they had misnamed rifle used in CT as a Bushmaster he based his expert opinion on the fact that he had never seen an Bushmaster with an "upper-dupper" like the one displayed on TV. I took about 2 minuets of his B.S. then put on my leave me the hell alone face and asked him to go bore someone else.

I was in one of the local major gun stores on Sunday. It was packed!
I saw three different couples each buy a gun, holster, ammo, pistol safe, and cleaning kits.

Almost saw a fight. Guy was looking at three different guns but couldn't make up his mind. The salesman put them back in the case and the buyer stared at them trying to decide. Another guy patiently waiting, waited for the salesman to put ONE gun back when said "I'll take the S&W Shield"!!

Salesman retrieved it and said "Sure". The first buyer say's "HEY!! I wanted that one!!"

The second buyers says "Money talks and............"

My son has lived in AL since March. He's been thinking about getting his CCW permit, but hasn't done anything about it. It just went to the top of his "to do" list. I don't know if my daughter in law is 100% on board, but I suspect she will be soon.

I'm going to advise him to look at 3rd generation semi autos!

I DROSd a 1911 at a small but well stocked black rifle type shop Friday morning. The walls were stacked with AR & AK variants and it was pretty quiet. I pick up my pistol the 27th. Be interesting to see what's left.

Tragic events, but what really makes me throw up in my mouth are the grandstanding politicians pushing & shoving to get on TV & out-compassion the other ones. And the sheeple suck it up & clamor for more.

Keep it. You might need it. An AR is an investment that hedges future bets and is non-monetary in nature.

Stopped by the LGS last night for a RCBS case deburring tool and it was quiet, the counterman was wrapping Christmas presents...

I also was shopping for 30 round PMags online last night, the GB auctions I was watching had bids in "stupid money" territory. Some fools ran up the bidding to over $500 for a 10 pack of plain black PMags, I looked around a little bit and picked up a bunch for $12.30 each with free shipping.

It looked like a tough day for the store clerks...
This is what bothers me about situations like this, amateurs who barely know which end of a rifle goes "bang" who rush to buy an AR because they think there are new laws coming. I wonder how many accidental shootings will result from this? I wonder if the idiot politicians proposing their various gun-grabbing schemes realize they have actually caused the sale of thousands of guns in just five days?

I bought some SIG Mosquito magazines from them a few years ago & still get their catalogs. "Cheaper Than Dirt"...

...isn't.

There were people who quit them when they started gouging in '09.

Cheaper Than Dirt- Have you checked on the cost of a truckload of dirt recently? Not so cheap!

I wish those shysters would quit sending me their catalogs and fliers. My last order with them was several years ago when they raised the price on ammo I ordered after I ordered it. Fought with them and had the up-charge refunded, but that shady tactic soured me on C-T-D for good.

By the way, I forgot to mention this in my earlier posts- Both LGS's I've visited this week are not buying trades unless someone is crazy enough to trade a AK/AR/FAL or something like that.
