Default Beer

Okay, so there have been all kinds of threads about everyone's favorite spirits and wines, but not one about beer. I'm not talking about Budweiser and Natural Light. I'm talkin' about GOOD beer. I love Heineken, but lately I've been expanding my horizons. I've sampled Sam Adams Cherry Wheat, Elliot Ness Amber, Steelhead India Pale Ale and Double Pale Ale, Fat Tire, Blue Moon Belgian Wheat, and Sweet Water. Also tried Natty Green's Gold. All were great. So, what's your favorite beer?

I don't drink but when I did (30 years ago at 18) I drank Lowenbrau.

Now you're talkin'. There is a beer called Hog Heaven that sells up here for about six bucks a bottle. It's a good sized bottle and the beer is outstanding, as well as strong. It's rated at 10% alcohol. There's another, darker, beer from the same brewery called "Reverend" it's thicker and richer, and at 9.5%, it hits the spot.

I will choose ale when possible. Arrogant ******* Ale is good, followed with Alaska Pale ale.

edit; the auto censor doesn't like the beer's name, so just go with a word meaning "un-fathered son".

Nice. Tonight I've sampled Smuttynose Robust Porter and Ranger Pale Ale. The Smuttynose was VERY thick but very good. I'm not a fan of dark beers, but this one was good. I also sampled a Blue Moon that was not a Belgian White. All very tasty.

Default No Bud ?

Ok, Lite beer of all kind do not seem like beer to me. If Natty Light was all there was I would never drink another beer. (You will never catch me with a light beer, never)
Budweiser? I don't see how anyone could have a conversation about beer and declare Budweiser not a "Good beer". It might not be one you like, but still a brand known world wide.
Had a Negra Modelo a while ago with a slice of cold pizza. I would have been just as happy with a Bud or a Miller High Life or MGD.
Thanks
Mike

Not that I don't enjoy a Budweiser from time to time. In fact, there was a time when that's all I would drink. I'm just trying to broaden my horizons so I can try different brews.

Dogfish Head 90 minute IPA.

A very flavorable and filling beer. Comes in a 4-pack and cost about $10.

It is my absolute favorite beer.

I prefer lagers to ale, though I do like Rogue Dead Guy ale. I usually buy Landshark, St. Pauli Girl, Kona Longboard, Rolling Rock, Henry Weinstein Reserve, Samuel Adams Cherry Wheat. When I only have time for one beer, I choose a Foster.

I did not like this beer at all. I would not wash bugs off my windshield with this stuff.

Trader Joe's wine is great stuff, we buy it by the case. But the beer...YUCH!!

Well, I don't have a single favorite, but if I had to pick just one (a sinful position to be put in), to drink at any time, it would be Duvel.

Warsteiner Dunkel might be second.

Tonight it's Anchor Steam to accompany a little Glenmorangie.

I don't drink as much beer as i used to, but every now & then...
Right now I have some Amstel Light in the fridge. I prefer the
paler, tangier beers. Dos Equis, Tecate, Carta Blanca for south
of the border beers. Sapporro, Tsing Tao for far east beers. Foster's,
Oh yeah! American: Rolling Rock, Hamms, Strohs, & this one beer
that I never saw anyplace but Nashville, Falls City Beer. Red Stripe
from Jamaica is also good. I've gotta stop, I'm getting thirsty!

30 yrs ago I drank Pabst Blue Ribbon mixed 50/50 with guinness stout. My brothers told me to "get some class" so I went to Molson then Sam Adams. Don't drink anymore and I think my brothers were wrong.

There's a Porter by Great Lakes Brewery called Edmund Fitzgerald that's a great dark beer. Most any by Yuengling (oldest beer brewery in the US) is fine.
A light beer that doesn't taste light is Bud Light Platinum.

My taste runs towards Dos Equis (Oscura, not light), Shiner Bock, and when I'm in New Zealand, Speights. I wish I could find Speights in El Paso.

Ooooooo now were talkin'

I love my Oregon Pinots, and Chateauneuf-du-Pape....

I love my once a week sip of The Macallan....

BUT I sure loves me my beer!

A small brewery in Ft. Bragg, CA (North Coasts Brewing Co) that makes some simply amazing beers, but two stand out:

Brother Thelonious (Belgian Trappist style ale best in a chilled snifter glass)

and

Scrimshaw, a true Pilsner that is the best American made pilsner I've had.

Be careful with the Thelonious, it will knock your socks off, it's a sipping beer, not a drinking beer. It really is outstanding.

Summit Brewing Co. in Saint Paul is a smallish (but not tiny), newish (26 or 27 years) brewery that makes some really good beers. My favorite is their original, Summit Extra Pale Ale. It is not a microbrew, but holds up against small-batch beers from all over, including some of the favorites of the Colorado microbrew snobs. It goes without saying that it blows stuff like Sam Adams and Fat Tire out of the water.

There is a little bit of local chauvinism in my choice, (and for a while I was kind of hot for the ex-wife of the founder, who was way out of my league, but that's a story for another day) but as I suggested above, I have taken it on the road and found a good reception.

For a change of pace I like Bell's Two Hearted Ale, from Michigan. It is crisp and hoppy (but not too), kind of like Summit, yet distinctively different.

Over the holidays in Chicago we hit a local store and came back with a selection of brews, and a few of those with the best names were deemed worthy of a photo. Some were pretty good, some were not worthy of discussion and some were downright hideous. Unfortunately, I can't recall which were which!

Cascade is, by far, the best I have ever had. A 'beautiful beer' as my friend in Fremantle always said. Unfortunately, the good folks in Hobart are very territorial and keep it all for the residents of Tasmania. That was the case in 1991, though it may have changed since then. Tiger beer in Singapore is another favorite. Pacifico is locally made in Mazatlan, but like most imports, doesn't taste quite right by the time it gets to Minnesota. In Canada, Moosehead is the way to go. I live 100 miles from the border and can truly attest to the fact that imported Moosehead is NOT the same as what you find in Canada. For local beers, I prefer August Schell's Original and Grain Belt Premium.
