Barbecue in Raleigh, N.C.
I will be in Raleigh, N.C. for lunch one day next week. A friend tells me I should get Barbecue. I want a sit down restaurant with waiters where I can drink lots of iced tea and eat ribs. There are several places on the internet that look good. Does anyone here have any suggestions on where to go, or places to avoid? Thanks, Waldo.

Waldo,
Travel a few more miles to Durham and get yourself some excellent BBQ, fried chicken, mac-n-cheese, hush puppies and all the iced tea you can drink at Bullocks BBQ. Makes my mouth water just thinking about it.
Since you'll be in the area, get yourself a calabash style seafood plate at the Farmers Market..........you won't be disappointed

Wow, there's no accounting for taste! Back when I lived in Memphis (BBQ center of the universe) I visited both Llano and Durham several times each year. Couldn't tolerate the BBQ in either place. .
Sorry for this minor thread jacking. I'll go away now.

I'm not big, in fact, I don't care for wet sauced BBQ in anything. I'm into marinating my ribs or pork roasts in my secret recipe for atleast 24 hours, then slow smoking those ribs and loins of lust to mouthwatering smokey tenderness. I believe NC types like to slosh on bucket fulls of sauce onto what was a perfectly seasoned/marinated/smoked rib, and then calling it BBQ....yuch. take_a_bow-1287.gif

I agree. I simply brush on a thin layer or two of sauce at the end and let it carmalize on the outside.

I've not had the pleasure of dining there. I have heard that the 'pitmaster' is a knowledgeable guy who lost his original business to the taxman. Seems he knew more about cooking than commerce.

If you were going to be in Goldsboro I would say definately give Wilber's a try. Some of the best Q I have had other then in Lexington.
Everytime I go that way I make it a point to stop there. As far as the town I live in it's definately Kepleys. (High Point) we do have several places but Kepleys is by far my favorite, been in business since like 1952 and still uses the same reciepe.

Wilbur's doesn't stand a chance in Goldsboro - the Democrats use it for their meetings. Good pulled pork bar-b-que is just down the street at McCauls - some of the best food in town.

As another mentioned, 'The Pit' in downtown Raleigh is very good.
Go North about a dozen miles into my next-door town of Wake Forest and try 'Carolina Smokehouse BBQ'. Also very good.
Another 8 miles North on US 1N, in my neighborhood is an old family-run place that is a very unadorned painted cinderblock building called 'Holden's Barbeque'. Very, very good.
When folks start comparing Texas beef BBQ to my Tarheel-state pig offering, I can't go along. They are both great in their own right.
I LOVE beef BBQ done right, and it's hard to come by here.
And not comparable IMO, sorta an apples/oranges thing.
Enjoy!

You must be talking about Cooper's.
I have to argue a little bit with you. They do make a fine BBQ pork in North Carolina with that good spicy sauce. Now when it comes to beef......

If you want NC style BBQ, get a chopped pork sandwich, eastern/Lexington style (same thing), with BBQ slaw.
I have never been able to figure out why people argue so much over what is or isn't BBQ, or why their states style is the best. Some of it seems to be in good fun, but....
Anyway, I've lived in several states and overseas, there's good food everywhere. People naturally favor what they know, but when I'm in a new place, I like to try the local specialties. Part of life's broadening experience.
Heck, I've even tried that stuff Texans call chili, which shows I have an open mind, and I'm willing to overlook the shortcomings, I mean differences, of other places.

In Texas they throw a slab of any kind of meat on a grill and call it barbecue. NC has to be Smithfields. I have ate many times at Rudys. Sign says worst bbq in Texas. Big orange sign. It is of course a lie and I enjoyed many a slab of brisket from there and you order your favorite meat in pound increments. Pork pulled from a roast cut up by loving hands then a secret sauce added comes to memory whenever I think of BBQ. Get the side order of Brunswick stew. You will thank me for that information.

It is--or was when I lived in Houston. I only had the chance to eat there once, but loved it.

Not sure, but I think maybe "barbeque" may have to join the list of banned subject like politics, religion, etc. Seems to stir up violent passions.

It's still here, I judge a place by it's brisket and County Line doesn't do it for me.
Supposedly the best brisket in Texas is done by Aaron Franklin in Austin
Texas Monthly magazine described it as " supernatural".

The wife and I watched a show about BBQ on the tube and Lexington BBQ in Lexington NC was highly recommended.
We were down in Winston-Salem one day and decided to drive down to Lexington. Found the resturant and went in. The meat had a good, hickory smoked flavor, but the sauce was almost pure vinegar.
Give me a tomato based BBQ sauce any day of the week!

Once you've had Lexington-style barbeque a few times, you'll begin to lose your taste for that tomato stuff. Your post made me hungry!

Unkn but--when I was there -there were a few very pretty ladies eating there who were in their late 20s early 30s. They happened to have been some of the Hooters Ladies you see in the national ads-and were there for such a photo shoot. I hadnt had such a nice meal with great scenery in a long time--like on that day.
A bit about them--they have been featured on the Food Network as well as the Travel Channel--and are still part of what im told--a long standing family feud. There are two great BBQ Restaurants there and one is owned by the Brother-one by the Sister-who are the feuding family members. Also, if you want a great variety of --and I do mean--VERY Hot--sauces--Blacks is the place to go.
BTW--it's owned by a Navy Vet--who at one time--had lighter colored hair than I do--and mine is blonde
If ever there? try their Ghost Pepper hot sauce--but not much of it because its so hot--they will have to carry you out to your vehicle-in a bathtub full of ice. ;-)) I bought a bottle of it two years ago--and still have about 4/5th of it left.
