When I was at the range yesterday I saw something interesting.
I really don't know if it's new or I just never noticed it before.
While browsing around in the accessories & stuff, I noticed a
familiar logo in a cellophane wrapper. It was a car deodorizer
in the shape of a small bottle of Hoppe's #9. I like the smell
of the stuff, but I don't know if I like it enough to have the
interior of the truck smelling like I was cleaning guns in the
cab. I might give it a try.

I'd use it for after shave if it didn't leave a rash. My wife, on the other hand, says it stinks up "her" house. My cleaning bench is set up in the garage.

In the last year, someone told me it smelled like bananas. I said "Bananas? Really?"

I had never thought of what it smelled like. My wife has never liked the smell, but it's wonderful, in my opinion. I never tried to equate it with another smell (like bananas), though.

Now, every time I clean my firearms, it smells like bananas. It must be the power of suggestion.

Yeah, I think it smells nice and so does my dog. No too long ago, he found some used patches in the trash and ate them. I better not get a Hoppe's air freshener or he'll probably eat that too.

Yeah, I always thought it smelled like bananas too.

I carry a bottle in my pocket--It smells like airplane glue in a tight. Kinda smells like a pretty girls Porsche back firing with a busted muffler when she lets off the gas.

One of the solvents in Hoppe's #9 is isoamyl acetate.

Isoamyl acetate is also used as an artificial banana or pear flavoring.

I'm a relative newcomer to using Hoppes #9, and the first time I opened a bottle of it I immediately linked the smell to isoamyl acetate(and ammonia)-I guess that's one of the downsides of being a chemist.

That's what I like about this Forum: the opportunities to learn some of the most interesting stuff, even though some of it is what my old prof called "nickel knowledge" (as in, that, and a nickel, will buy you a cup of coffee. You can tell how long ago THAT was!)

Thanks Ben; I'll be sniffin' my Hoppe's next pistol-cleaning, seeing if I can pick up any banana or pear scents.:D

I like it a lot, but it is better on an occasional basis than it would be as an item of constant exposure.

On the other hand, CLP kind of makes me a little sick, like soup where one of the ingredients was left out of the refrigerator overnight and shouldn't have been. There is just something a little sour and off about that stuff. Too bad it's so good at what it does.

A chemist has a nose that knows. Just stay away from smelling ene's.

Hoppes #9...yeah I like it, brings back memories. Also really love the smell of fresh fired paper shotgun shells. I grew up next to a trap range and used to collect the shotgun hulls and unbroken clay birds for the old guy who ran it. Got payed in pop and candy bars till I got old enough to run the trap, then I usually got a little cash too! Would actually like an air freshener with that smell but I would probably set off every alarm at TSA just driving past the airport!
