Today Is National Chicken Wings Day
Joey Chestnuts holds the world's record for eating 179 chicken wings, Teresa Bellissimo of Buffalo, claims, along with several others, she invented the Buffalo Wing at her Anchor Bar, from 1990 through 1993, the city of Buffalo gained national prominence for its "cuisine", thanks to the Buffalo Bills, and purists, to this day, go all out Armageddon on each other over what is the proper dipping sauce when one eats traditional spicy deep fried wings. That said, what is your favorite way of eating hot wings, what dipping sauce do you use, what dish accompanies your wings, and what restaurant serves what you believe to be the best and most original "Buffalo Wing"?
Include your own recipes if you'd like.

I'll start by saying I really like good wings, but not blazing hot ones. There is a local hotel/bar that has some really good wings and we go about once a month on wing night. The wing sauce we order is called "zippy tomato bacon" and its mild with a lot of flavor. We always have celery and blue cheese on the side.
Last year we took some of the kids and grandkids to Niagara Falls and we went to the Anchor Bar to try their wings. They were good, but not as good as the wings mentioned above, to us anyway.
Here's s the outside of Anchor Bar.
And a plate of their wings
Their blue cheese is different, it's good, just different.

Honey Chipotle from papa johns. I know, but you gotta try them one time. Ranch then blue cheese. I like hot, but not sweating hot. A good home brew goes well.

My first ever wings were from the Anchor Bar in Buffalo (around 1973 or so). They have franchised into this area the past few years. I have eaten them too many times to count. They were good back then but now don't make my 10 list. I still like traditional Buffalo wings, just not theirs so much.
I willingly participated in national ice cream, hot dog and tequila days last week. Seems like it's wings today.
Now if we can find out when national; scotch, fudge, chocolate and steak days are I can start planning accordingly. You know, practice makes perfect!

Yes, so long as you honor the Anchor Bar with a Singaporan brew called Anchor Beer...

Back in 1980-81 my friends and I used to spend Friday evenings in a little Italian restaurant in Upstate NY. They served the best Buffalo style wings I ever had. A couple dozen of their hottest wings along with a pitcher of beer, mmm.. They came with blue cheese dressing for dipping the celery sticks in. IL-Primo, in Phoenix makes them pretty close now.....

I like to marinate the wings overnight in a concoction of Franks sauce and Texas Pete with a few shakes of Tabasco sauce. Grill over mesquite wood. Pretty warm but not to the point you feel the need to stick your tongue in ice.

First of all they ain't wings they are wing pieces. Every chicken wing I have ever seen on the hoof consisted of three articulating parts. The first part ain't got no meat on it so after you suck the sauce and knaw the crunch off, discard. The second part has two bones running through it which makes for some interesting tongue action to get at all the meat. the third joint aka the "drumette" is the serious knawing joint and from which one gets the greatest reward for effort exerted. Don't let them sell you 12 wings and then bring you 12 joints-if they advertise wings demand whole wings dammit!!! And as every male knows when you get your 12 pieces-the wife gets the middle joint and you get the third joint-unless she's paying then she gets the third joint.

The first Buffalo Wings I ever had was at a place in the VA Beach area called The Sea Shed. It was either '82 or '83. We'd go in a order a mess of wings, 24 steamed clams in the shell and a few cold longnecks. It was Heaven.

I love Buffalo Wild Wings Mango Habanero boneless wings, with Ranch & Blue Cheese for dipping. A side of cheesy Buffalo chips & I'm set. That is,
once I get a Foster's to wash it down with!

I don't understand the reference to "Original" wings circa mid 1990's. I was raised in upstate NY and distinctly recall these being a staple of my teenage years. Most Fridays in the mid 70's my buds and I ended up at Tally Ho Pizzeria in Niagara Falls; 8 bucks would buy you 50 Wings and a pitcher of Genesee Creme Ale. The only option available back then was wings in Mild, Medium and Hot and served with Blue Cheese ONLY (ranch dressing; huh?) I knew the owner and all the cooks very well and "the recipe" is quite simple; unlike now a days with every flavor imaginable (coconut chicken wings; really?) and a dozen or more "heat" options. I've made these from scratch for my family and I for nearly 40 years; yes they're not good for you but boy are they Good!
