Favorite wood for grips?
Been looking thru my revolvers and the more I look , the more I like rosewood.
Have S&W stocks made from walnut , rosewood and Goncalo Alves. I have some Hogues that are made from other exotic hardwoods like Pau Ferro , Goncalo Alves , Coco-Bolo and of course good ol' walnut.
I'm thinking rosewood from here on.
What's your favorite?

There are far too many woods with different colors and characteristics that I appreciate, it would be too hard to pick just one type. Plus just one type of wood can have many different looks depending on what part of the tree it came from.

Love rosewood, but I've long wished for a set in ebony. Eagle Grips used to offer them, I think.

Often thought a set of Hogues in ebony would look great , especially on a stainless gun. But I was told ebony doesn't glue well enough. The wood is too oily.

I am fond of Birdseye Maple but don't have any grips made from it.
Made a couple of spoons from it lately.

I think I'd pick cordia, just because they remind me of the old dan wesson zebra wood grips, but cocobolo ain't half bad.

Last time I checked, Herrett's was going out of business and selling off
their remaining inventory. Don't know if they are still there or not.
Here, on the left, is my Model 29 with Herrett's Coco-Bolo stocks.
On the right, is my Model 19 with Herrett's walnut Jordan Troopers.

I've always been partial to cocobolo.
Here's my Govt Model with a set of Hogues:
My 642-1 with a set of Spegels (they've gotten darker over the years):
While I don't own the gun anymore, a 3" 65 with a set of Ahrends:
As much as I like cocobolo, I also like kingwood and desert ironwood, and have been thinking about getting some 1911 grips in those woods.
Rosewood is nice, too. Until recently my 642ND wore a set of rosewood Eagle Secret Service grips. Got them when I got the gun some 25 years ago, or so (it's the gun on the left):
Several years ago I remember seeing a set of double-diamond 1911 grips from Spegel in African blackwood that looked really cool.
I've seen some holly grips that would look good on a blued/black gun.

Here are some of Herrett's double diamond coco-bolo stocks on my old
Colt Gold Cup. The Ultimate 1911 knife is supposed to match, but I'm
still working on the color.
Craig Spegel's Extended Boot stocks on my Colt's Agent. I can't remember
what the wood is. Does anyone know?

Another Zombie thread walks again.............
Depends on if the gun is blue, nickle or blue............. I like nice grain and contrast,
One of my favorites is a 4"586-4 round butt with a set of Spegel extended Boot Grips in Birdseye maple.
Spegel has made me several sets of grips in Black Walnut for working guns in stainless.
I have several sets of Executioner's stag grips on blued guns.... including a set of no bark on my Reg Magnum that came without it's original grips. I was looking for something period correct without spending "Ivory money"!!!!

Up in my #15 post I asked if anyone could identify the type of wood that
Craig Spegel used for the Extended Boots on my Colt's Agent. I dug up
some paperwork that indicated I asked for either Granadillo or S. Bolivian
Rosewood. So, it's one or the other. Any educated guesses. Here is a
little better (?) photo.
Craig didn't indicate on his invoice which wood he used. He does
not have an email address, so I sent him a letter with photo to
see if he can solve the mystery for me. SUSPENSE!

There are so many beautiful woods to choose from, it makes your head spin when trying to choose. I prefer light wood on stainless guns and dark on blued and nickel guns. However, my default wood is cocobolo, preferably bright orange with light and dark marbling. It looks good on any gun.

My favorite wood for grips is, Fiddle Back Maple, especially the wood that came from the Silver Maple trees, that my Mom, and my wife planted in our back yard. Those trees, had to be removed after growing there for 50+ years. I have grips made of it, on several S&W revolvers, and several Colt auto pistols. They were made by Old Sarge, and keith Brown. I've made most of my Colt auto pistol grips myself. I'd love to post pictures, of them, but, Since I've had severe memory loss, I've lost my ability to do so. Maybe I can get my son to show me how to do it again. I'll try later.

Rosewood is classic but don’t limit yourself.....
Open it up... there are many beautiful woods out there.
American Holly, Zebra Wood, Padauk, Dye Stabilized Maple, Snakewood.....
Choices are endless....

Goncalo Alves, (Tigerwood, or it is sometimes called other Brazilian wood names)
I still have about a 1/4 pickup load of 3/4" thick boards sitting in the shed, left over from when they floored our house with it 13 years ago,,
Some day,, I will have a go at making a set of grips,,,
How many grips would 3 or 4 of the bundles of boards in the pic be able to make? 
The boards are 4 inches wide.

I tend to like "lacewood" or "snakewood" or whatever it is on this Ballester Molina. You don't see it very often for target type revolver stocks.

Here's a pictures of a pair of Fiddleback maple grips, shown on a Mod. 27 S&W, made by Keith Brown. They were made of Wood from 60+ year old trees, that were cut down for safety reasons. Here are pictures of a pair of grips, shown on a Colt Match Target, National Match, Pistol. The grips were made by Old Sarge, mad of the same wood as the ones shown on the S&W revolver in my previous post #28. I am usually a fan of figured American or French walnut. One of the nicest pair of grips I have are made from stabilized spalted maple. They are on a Ruger flat top .44 mag Blackhawk.

I happen to like Gabon Ebony. One of my Randall knives has the handle made of Gabon Ebony. One of these days I want a set made for one of my revolvers. Maybe for my much beloved S&W 696?

I suppose Rosewood is my favorite. I usually replace the factory stocks on my guns to preserve them from damage, plus because S&W target stocks are a little big for comfort for me, and the magnas aren't quite big enough, at least for the N-frame guns. I generally go with Altamont; prices are reasonable, the stocks always fit perfectly, and they look great. I went with Rosewood on one of my 1911's, and two of three revolvers. The 3rd got walnut. Once Rosewood is back in stock, I'll put a set on a 4th revolver I just got.
