buy an identical gun, just ...because?
hello all,
i have a monkey on my back here, and its name is 629.
im kinda serious here, sorta but not really ,but i am ![Big Grin](https://smith-wessonforum.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif) ![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](https://smith-wessonforum.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)
i picked up my favorite piece, a 4 1/4" 629 , months ago.
i had ordered it and waited close to a year, stressing that i wouldnt get it , or it would be substandard and have to be returned, or i wouldnt have the cash and someone else would get it. my fears were unfounded the piece was/is awesome doesnt even need a trigger job, smoothest da ive ever felt on a stock revolver. my problem lies in the fact that i cant stop shopping for them! i look at every add to sell. i already own one! why do i want another? i dont own any L frames i want a 4 1/4" 686 there is one for sale at a gun store in vernon (couple towns over) but they also have a 4 1/4" 629.
a guy answered my add to sell a winchester ,hes from vernon, all i could think was -i could deliver it and head straight for gunstore for the 629!
do you guys (or gals) deal with this kind of "need" i honestly dont understand why i want a second one, especially when my accumulation would be more diverse if i got something i dont already have like a 5" ![Cool](https://smith-wessonforum.com/images/smilies/cool.gif) (except i dont really like the full lug n frame)

I currently have two 629's, a 4" and a 6.5". I did sell a 629 no dash to fund another N-frame. So it is possible to let one go.
I would probably buy another 629 if the price is right.
The Latin medical name of the illness or OCD desire to own all guns of a certain type is; "Obsessivo Collectuso Specifico Modelo".
It is only fatal to your wallet.
Remember, the 629 is only one species of the genus Smith & Wesson N-frame family. I have a boxed 29-2, a 3.5" 27-2, a pre 27 from the 50's. If it is only 629's you want do not look to the left or right.

I had a 4" 629-4. It was a fine gun and very accurate. I got it about 10 years ago for $400.00. I thought I was satisfied, until I ran into a 4" P&R 629-0 for $800.00. I bought it and sold the -4 for $700.00. I love this gun. I'm happy. As mentioned above, buy the gun and keep the one you like best. Somebody will want the other one. It's called "trading up."

its not really trading up though, i already have a 629-6 that is identical . i want it in addition to the one i currently have, and it wont be for sale anytime soon.
these are current -6 629 models, this barrel length has not been offered before, so any 4 1/4 " 629 will be identical to the one i have .
i have a 6" 629 nd in case as well ,i wouldnt mind a cased 29 to compliment it .if i came across that it might beat the urge for a second -6.

Unless it was a pair of cowboy guns I don't think I'd go with identical pairs even if I had the $$$.
About as close as I get is "needing" a Model of 1955 Target to go with my 1950, a couple of 4" models to go with my 6" and vice verse.
I'm still filling niches. I don't have a "boomer" or a .22 revolver yet.

If there is a model you like and can afford more than one, why not?
I think this is actually very common. A friend who has been gone now
for several years once told me that he had over a hundred 1911 45s in
his collection. I never saw them but it's hard to imagine that there
were no duplicates. I have a pair of S&W 4" 28-2s that are very close
in condition and only twenty thousand apart in serial number. Is one
of them for sale? No. Would I buy another if I saw one at a price I
would be willing to pay, unlikely these days,? Yes. If you really like
a particular model why only have one?

I had a pair of 629s in 3 inch and shot one and kept the other in the safe unfired. I found a guy here with a 3 inch 24 and we traded for one of the 629s and both were happy. Sometimes having a second one gives you good trading material later.

OK, now I feel better. I now know I'm not the only one that does this. But, (and it's a big but) I need to stop doing it on 2nd Model Pre War .22's. I guess in retrospect it could be worse. I could crave RM's.

There must be a misunderstanding: those aren't identical; now you need two more.

I have been tempted to get identical guns, one to shoot and one to keep cherry. The closest I've come is a Stoeger 8045 Cougar and a Beretta 8045 Cougar. I can't decide which to shoot and which to preserve.

If it is good for The Lone Ranger, it is good for anybody.

I figgered Sal would show up for this one.......
I do believe that all handguns should be paired. I'm in desparate need of a 58 to go with my 57, I'm gonna have to find a 4" 29-2 to go with the 6 1/2. I'm good with the Jframes ( a 60 and 36, both no dash) and my 1911s (5" and 3"). I'm OK witht the Highway Patrolmen as well, 4 differnt ones to mix and match. I spose my 5" and 6 1/2" Heavy Duties would look good in a BBQ rig. I should get a shiney Pre 27 to go with the 5" -2 .....guess theres still some shopping to do!

It's called redundancy!
I bought a second 9mm Star Firestar because it was in like new condition with original plastic box , tools , owners manual , and 2 extra factory mags , for $200 and in better shape than the one I owned for 20 years!
Bought a second like new , early OMC Back-Up when I found a deal too!
Did I mention the pre-70 Colt Gold Cups? ![Big Grin](https://smith-wessonforum.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif) '
Or the Ruger Old Armys?

There's an old adage that says if you find something you really like, buy two, because they'll quit making them.

Well, now, just 'cause you have a pair of guns in the same caliber and configuration don't mean they're "identical." For example, I have four Winchester 94 carbines, all in 30/30 and all with 20" barrels. But they sure ain't "identical!" One is a saddle ring carbine, one is a 1947 flatband, etc. I have two 9mm Berettas, one is an M9, one is a 92FS. But they're not "identical!" They have different markings, sights, etc. Get the drift here? This is how I justify buying lots of "identical" guns - they're not identical but each is a unique collector's item. It's simple and I get to buy lots of stuff that way!

If I had the money, I'd buy a pair and a spare of my favorite guns! That way, you have extras if they're discontinued or one is in the repair shop.
Heavy skeet shooters who like the Remington M-1100 often have three: one to shoot, one to have on hand if needed, and one in the shop! I've heard that heavy action IPSC shooters also do that with their M-1911's.
Of course, these people shoot more in a weekend than most of us do in several years!

I have ones by Colt, Springfield (the Arsenal in Springfield, MA), Rem Rand, Ithaca and Rock Island Armory. I don't have a Remington UMC, a Singer or a Union Switch and Signal, and probably never will, considering what they cost
On the other hand, I don't quite know what I'm doing with two Shansei 45 copies of the broomhandle.

Great selections of fine weaponry, please add me to your future possible sell list. ![Big Grin](https://smith-wessonforum.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif) I wish I still had General Hardaway's 42 Remington.
PS am serious about any possible sell list in the future. I have a budding possible deal going on and have to call him on Thursday.

Have amy of you watched the very old gene autry movies and noticed that when he started out he wore two colts but in most of the later movies he wears one but on his left side you can see the gunbelt is made for another absent holster?
As shown in my previous post I have some similar model guns but they are different calibers except for those 1860 colts I used to own.
I guess I am the lone ranger here but I just dont see the need for two exact guns in the same caliber. I am proud of the three sets of guns shown, I can use the same holsters for my 5" 27-2 and 5" 29-2. Of course the two colt SAA`s both in 4 3/4" .44 special and .45 colt. Also have one in .32-20. And then the 4" 24-3 (.44 special) and 4" 25-5 (45 colt) and a pair of colt troopers in .22 and 357 and .38. The advantage is except for a slight weight difference the guns feel the same in the hand and you can use the same holsters. Sorry, I just dont see the need for two same caliber guns in the same model with the same barrel length. There is always some other gun I would spend the money on from the identical twin.

I have and some of those are some of my favorite early Westerns. Also, I THINK he wore two guns when he did that serial he made called: Phantom Empire. I THINK I remember two in that one but has been about 30 years since I last watched it.

Short answer: Buy it!
Reason: you never know what you're going to like until you try it. I bought a 21' sailboat once on a lark and loved it. And, once you've figured out what you really, and I mean REALLY like, then you've solved "the meaning of life" as far as I'm concerned.
As far as I'm concerned all we have is our family and friends whom we love, a few 'things' we REALLY like, and a bunch of 'stuff'.
