Default Eye And shooting problem

The last three months I noticed my sight picture was getting more blurry and seemed darker to me. The front sight was just as blurry as the target and rear. This was new .. Like 3 months ago it wasn't nearly as bad. So off to the the ophthalmologist i went today. It appears the sight in my right eye has degenerated severely since my last visit, like 6 months ago. I have been a right eye shooter all my life ( Rifle and Pistol) and I am right handed. Guess there is not a lot I can do about the right eye and I am going to have to switch to being right handed and a left eye shooter. I haven't even tried this. Any advice? and how the heck is this gonna work with a Long gun? Ain't life interesting!!!!

If shooting a handgun turn your head a little. With a rifle try shooting left handed.
A friend of mine's cross dominant. That's what works for her.

I did the same I am right handed but left eye dominant. I had mono Lasik correction and it messed me up shooting a revolver right handed. So I switched to left handed, takes a min to resight the guns but its getting like 2nd nature now. Good luck.

Try shooting left handed and left eyed.My vision is fading too.It feels bit awkward at first, but I'm as good (or not so good :-) ) with one as the other.

Default Switching eyes

Switching eyes will take some practice, but I think that you can adapt and not notice a whole lot of difference after a while.

Try a piece of blue painter tape with a small hole cut in it on the right lense of your shooting glasses. Might have to experiment with hole size. If that works, then go get a Merit optical device or the Lyman Hawkeye. Both are sold by Brownell's.

What was the diagnosis? There is always a reason for declining vision. Many can be treated. It sounds as though he said nothing can or needs to be done, is that correct?

That sounds a lot like macular degeneration. My dad had that and his vision was devastated in a relatively short time. I'm not sure about now but 10 years ago there was not much they could do about it.

I hope that isn't your problem and if it is then I hope they can do something about it now. God bless

In your position I would be more concerned as to WHY your vision has degraded this much this quickly. I hope that you intend to do some follow up to determine what is going on.

As for changing eyes, that will be easier to do than you expect. I've been switching eyes with my shooting hand as long as I've been shooting and simply a matter of "just doing it". BTW, I also shoot rifle with either hand and some days I'll actually shoot better "weak" side because my vision in my left eye is a bit better than my right.

I'm in my mid 50's, take more than one daily medication that affects my vision, so corrective lenses are a fact of life for any type of open sight precision shooting.

It was almost like a switch being flipped at 47. The optometrist said, "Welcome To Middle Age!"
