My short term memory is really bad. Long term is amazing.
I have been having short term memory problems lately. Can't remember what I did yesterday, or even a conversation from 2 minutes ago. I'm only 48 and in great health. But my long term memory is amazing. I can, with a moments thought, tell you the teams that played in all 47 Super Bowls. But something happened tonight that I couldn't believe.
I had a rare night at home with nothin' to do. Missus P&R Fan and I watched a bit of TV. When the show was over I was channel surfing and saw Gilligans Island was on. Always watched that when I was a kid, so I tuned it in. It was the episode where Gilligan finds a totem pole put up by headhunters, and the head on top looks just like him. Headhunters start kidnapping the castaways, so the professor decides Gilligan should dress up as a headhunter to make the think he is their king. Professor apparently speaks headhunter, and tells him what to say. Just before he does I turned to Missus Fan and said "Pooloo See Bagoomba". That was exactly what professor told him to say. I saw that probably 35 years ago. Why did I remember that?
Sometimes I amaze myself.
Jim

Are you taking any cholesterol medication like Crestor? Maybe some other medication? I've heard these screw with short term memory.
For the record, I'm only 47 and having the same issue. I'm not taking any medication either.

Memory is one of those really weird things. Like how come I can rattle off Willie Mays' career batting average, home runs hit, and tell you in every detail what happened the night my dad took me to a Giants game at Candlestick in 1966. But could I ever remember my mother-in-law's birthday? Nooooo...

I can tell you all about the work I did as a young design engineer in the 1980s after graduating from college at the age of 31 in 1978. I have no idea where my car keys are if I don't put them in the "key ashtray" by the front door.
My short term memory is measured in seconds, that's a fact because 61 seconds is more than a minute. Welcome to the new 'Senior CRS Status' . It will only get worse.

FWIW, I've been battling the same thing since 45. A friend with similar woe's told me to try Gingo Biloba . I have been taking it for a few years. ( When I remember to take it ;-)) I honestly believe it does help. You might give it a try.
p.s. I think it's easier to remember things from long ago because my head was full of less worries and complexities then. So the big question is...
Maryanne or Ginger...?

As you get older, there is more worth remembering in the past, and less worth remembering in the current day.

My worst problem is names. I see former employees who worked for me for 10-15 years and I can't remember their names, I remember what they did but not names. The other day someone asked me the name of my wife's employer, ( I prairie dog hunt with him) and I was blank. Thank goodness I got one of those "Find the 10 faces in the tree" emails yesterday and I passed so I know I don't have Alzheimer's.

I know the feeling. I am the king of useless trivia and memories from 40+ years ago, but I haven't a clue where I put something 2 hours ago.
Useful hint: Never get the idea "I've got a new hiding place." You'll hide it alright, from yourself. 5 years later you will stumble across it, and utter "Gawwwwleeee, I wondered where I put that."

Don't ever put someting in 'a safe place'. About 20 years ago the capture papers on my Chicom Tokarev were getting yellow and wrinkled, so I put them in a safe place. I've since looked all the places they should be and a lot they shoudn't be, but that's the last I've seen of them.

I'm going to go read some of his clever old posts.

What gets me is to go in a room to get something and get there and have a blank on what I came for. The only blessing is that if I stop and think a minute it will usually come to me.

I've been going blank with coworkers names for nearly 5 years (I'm 68). I hate it. Especially hard when I still work with them (newer people, not ones past a year). I wish there was an easy fix, but there is not. Ah well, getting old, I think.

As that happens more and more to me, I just tell people that I have learned so much that the only way I can remember any more is to let some of the old memories out and I don't want to lose any of the old ones so they stay.

After two months of daily chemo, my short-term at times doesn't fire on all cylinders. It's frustrating to be sure.
I took labworm's advice and got some Ginko Thinko cuz my memory is stinko.

Thanks. My chemo ended 4 years ago and I still have hiccups with last names and dates. Every important calendar date is in my phone as I struggle to recall them.

I downloaded one of the free “brain training apps on my phone and every day it reminds me to train. It has helped more than you would think and keeps track of your scores and gets more difficult the better you get.
By the way I do like +P broccoli with my bear steak whenever I take Maryann to dinner.

Same here. It's why I had to give up playing Chess, but can enjoy replaying recorded games. Where it really concerns me is at the reloading bench. I have to be "overly" cautious, and triple-check every step I take.

I will let you in on the secret. But it may not help you. In fact if you share this information with the wrong people it may put you in mortal danger.
You have been warned.
Millions of years of evolution have perfected the methodology of our internal storage of information. And since the goal of evolution is survival of the individual, not merely to reproduce like sea turtles laying 30,000 eggs to ensure two survivors, but to reproduce AND GUIDE OUR OFFSPRING to be everything we are and more...
WE ONLY REMEMBER WHAT IS LINKED TO OUR INDIVIDUAL SURVIVAL. Put another way we recall the significant and discard the insignificant. If your wife or girlfriend (or both) blather on for hours so that they sound like the adults in a Charles Schultz Peanuts special. Well, our evolution has shown us this is not significant. Knowing a dozen or so words in headhunter, so yours is not shrunken, well that information could save your life. It is retained.
You can't argue with evolution. If you recall it, it was important, even if you cannot recall why. If you cannot recall it, obviously it was not important.
Remember, keep this secret. Those who blather constant insignificant drivel are not fond of evolutionary truth.
Good Luck.

Yeah, especially their own birthday and every little mistake you made, but they can’t remember their mistakes

My short term memory is measured in seconds, that's a fact because 61 seconds is more than a minute. Welcome to the new 'Senior CRS Status' . It will only get worse.

I can't even find my short term memory now and it's only 5 years later. We had to get our land line back so I can call myself to hear my cell phone ring. Not a happy day with the missus when my cell phone is missing.

My wife and I did a WELLNESS TEST at our doctors office last year.
Given 3 words to remember then other tasks, count backwards from 100 by 7, who is president , where are you at, some current event BS.
Did all things great but at that time I could only remember 2 0f the 3 words.
Now I can remember all of them penny table apple.
Going to do it again this year but this time we get $25 gift card. I wonder how many times a year I can so it?
