My new ride

Wonder where ladder13 is?:)

I figure two places.

On the trail, showing off his new bicycle, which I happen to be jealous about.

In the Bicycle store, looking at lights, speedometer, bells, bags and even maybe an antenna with a raccoon tail.:D
Little kids just don't have the cash, but big kids do.;)

He is not only exercising but having lots of fun.

My butt is throbbing and something else is numb. Took a ride by the store, was mobbed so I left.
Rode about 30 miles, did I say my butt is sore?
I like the racoon tail idea, mmmmm.

Ya mean your buns are burnin:D

Stick with it, seats are like buying holsters, you'll waste a lot of money. Numbness:D just stay away from the V pill for awhile.:D

Don't even entertain the thought of buying a Brooks Leather Saddle, them things take months to break in.

Take a bubble bath tonight, 30 miles:eek:, cut back a little so those buns adjust from the soft cushions on your sofa to a manly seat.:)

Ya havin fun I'll bet.;)

Padded shorts lol
That makes a good joke, but . . . I won't ride to the end of my driveway unless I am wearing proper shorts. :o

Fancy jerseys are optional. Good shorts and proper shoes, preferably with your choice of cleats, are essential if you want to ride often and enjoy it.

Yeah, I have been riding nearly daily for decades, just for the fun of it. Before getting old, USCF racing was a passion when time and finances made it possible. So, I am well versed in all the cycling paraphernalia.

Now, I am just the old guy on the fancy carbon bicycle not going nearly as fast as it should. But, I eat pretty much whatever I like and I don't even breath hard when jogging down to the end of the rifle range to change a target.

The really good news is that I meet all kinds of nice people on an astonishing assortment of bicycles, all of whom seem to be having fun. Life is good.

I may ask Keith44sp to make me a saddle for my bike. :D

Thanks for the advice, and that's a beautiful ride you have there.

The V pill is old technology. :p

Since we all seem to be discussing bicycles, I would like to show you one which I purchased in 1970.

Raleigh Twenty, which was a huge seller back then.
Little did I know, it would become a highly collectible item.
Just fold it in half and throw it into the trunk, fun on the Beach, 3 speed, not great for any distant riding.

Gave it to a friend of mine's son who was about 9 years old, he rode a beat up piece of junk, he loved the thing.

Thanks for the advice, and that's a beautiful ride you have there.
My pleasure, sir.

Thanks for the kind words, too. I guess a new bike every 20 years or so is not too excessive.

Fixed_Gear_46x21.jpg

This was once "state of the art" for early season, fixed gear riding. My other road bikes are from the same era, but have (gasp!) twelve, count 'em 12, speed drive.

Oddly enough, those old bikes all went faster than my current, fancy one. :o

I notice your seats are tilted nose up, is there some advantage to that, or just suits you?

Took a few pics with my handy dandy IPhone.

Part of the bike trail.

Some of the trail passes the muzzle end of my gun club. No fear the range is more than a mile away and over a mountain. We have 72 acres.
We put up a chain link fence after some dopes ignored the "active gun range, danger" signs and wandered onto the property. You can see the fence posts.

Approaching a metal bridge over a tributary to NYC's water supply, it's about 60 ft over the river.

One of the countless reservoirs up here feeding NYC. There's some houses on the shore line, but NYC bought all the surrounding acreage years ago and no further building will be done near the water.

This incline is about a 1/2 mile in length, I found low gear in a hurry.:D

This is the northern end of the trailway, they've cleared and paved about 50 miles already from the NYC line to this area and will go eventually into CT, some 15 miles more. You can see the machinery used to prepare the path.

On this bike, which is a fixed gear currently with a 46 tooth front chainring driving a 20 tooth rear cog, you will often reach a fairly high cadence while descending a hill. If you do the calculation, you will see that riding this 62.1 inch gear ratio at 30 mph results in the crank turning at 160 rpm.

Yeah, since it is a "fixed" gear, that is no freewheel, and your feet are attached to the pedals with cleats, your legs will hit 160 rpm too.

Even with short, 165 mm crank arms, it is hard to stay smooth in the saddle at that cadence. Tipping the saddle nose up a little helps a sprinter (or in my case a sprinter wanna be) stay back on the saddle a little which seems to help you stay smooth.

Most people are more comfortable around 90 rpm. At that more reasonable cadence, a flat saddle position works better.

Back in the day, I could hit 140 rpm on the flat with a 96 inch gear. I think that is almost 40 mph . . . but only for a short distance, usually on the track at Trexlertown. And . . . that was a long time ago in a distant galaxy. :o
