Who owns Smith & Wesson?
I was just wondering who owns Smith and Wesson now. Is it an American / American based company?

I'm part owner but I don't call the shots.
Some say the company is ripe for a buy out.

Smith & Wesson Holdings which came out of the purchase by Saf-T-Hammer. S&W Holdings is publically traded, so the real answer is "Whoever owns S&W stock".

I like that you said "stock" instead of "grip" since this is about S&Ws. Well done.

Affirmative. On May-01 Saf-T-Hammer acquired S&W and then later changed the name from Saf-T-Hammer to S&W Holding Corp in February 2002. S&W Holding Company is the parent company of S&W.

Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. is traded on the Nasdaq stock exchange as SWHC. 77.22% of its stock is held by “institutional holders”, the largest of which is the Vanguard Group with 14.39% followed closely by FMR LLC (Fidelity Management and Research) with 13.88%.
My amateur description of SWHC is that it is a lightly traded highly volatile stock. My WAG at the discrepancy between my numbers and 6518John’s is that mine are current and his came from a financial report. If that’s correct the big boys are buying calculating SWHC will bounce back from this fall’s collapse. It’s interesting that S&W’s stock has plummeted while the larger market set record highs. I chalk that up to the end of Sandy Hook/Obama inspired panic buying.
So, Harrydale, S&W is an American company. If you buy a share of stock then go the stock holders’ meeting you can vote doublesharp for chairman of the board so he can “call the shots”. However, there’s a chance you might be outvoted.

Mine came from the NASDAQ's website. They were under Fridays stock price so I presumed them current but apparently they aren't. That being the case Fidelity has sold has whole bunch of SWHC

I'm with you Absalom. I have some money invested with Vanguard and didn't even know they owned a portion of S & W. That's kinda cool, irrelevant but cool.

I don't know either (on how current NASDQ website is) but I will call Thompson-Reuter Monday and find out because I am curious now. I do know hundreds of millions of dollars are invested based on the Thomson reports. All the investment advisory services have them at neutral or hold to buy/hold. Thompson has a neutral outlook with a share price with a 12 month low of $10, high of $19 and a mean of $15 (49.6% upside). Company has a 10 rating on fundamentals (highest rating) and same on valuation. But a 3 on risk--highly volatile and a 2 on price momentum (historically low seasonal earning period). Insider trading is a 5.
I also have subscriptions to Smart Capitol IQ, Smart Consensus Reports, and Market Edge Second Opinion and they all have similar reports on the company.
If one is a betting man or woman it appears to be an undervalued company with excellent fundamentals and a lot of upside.

Vanguard has a number of growth funds and I bet the mutuals are picking the company up because of excellent fundamentals and being viewed as undervalued. Those are attractive markers to growth funds.

Mr. K22 you belong on Wall Street--your opinions dovetail with those who get paid big money to manage really big money. You are dead on with your panic buying analysis. The irony has escaped few in investment circles that one perceived by gun owners to be so bad for firearms has driven equity positions in firearms companies to astronomical heights. I think investment folks have sobered up now and the stocks are "hungover" and being kept artificially low.

Smith & Wesson Holding Corp doesn't pay a dividend.
Ruger pays close to 4%.

Who owns Smith & Wesson?
My comments should coincide with other posts on this subject.
1. As has been previously stated, the demand for firearms rose non-linearly after Sandy Hook, which included firearm prices (supply & demand curves);
2. That buyer demand translated in to much higher sales and profits for the firearm manufacturers, which in turn made investors buy SWHC stock; https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=swhc+stock+price
3. That demand has been satisfied and now dealers have higher levels of unsold inventory than they can afford or need. The orders being placed with manufacturers have decreased which in turn is driving sales, profits, and stock prices downward;
4. Insofar as the attitudes of newly elected officials are concerned, I am not sure what the outcome of our elections tomorrow will be, or how it will affect the firearm purchasing decisions within our Nation. (Second Amendment). One can only hope.

On the other hand, S&W maintains a "temporary workforce" and outsources "production of certain key components", a strategy that is not necessarily associated with consistent quality.
