"A Night In Old Mexico" with Robert Duval
POTENCIAL SPOILER ALERT: We just saw this movie. Duval is basically an older version of his character in Open Range transported to modern Texas where he is losing his ranch. The grandson he didn't know he had shows up, a NY college student, and they go for a fling in Mexico. They are in a busy city during Day Of The Dead celebration. The are mixed up in a drug deal and stalked by a Mexican hit man. They meet a Mexican singer/stripper who parties with them. Duval is just fine in this. The grand son is a bland actor like any on generic TV dramas about young people. Plot twists involving him are totally unbelievable. The girl IS believable and vibrant. Her relationship with Duval is improbable yet believable. Duval's interaction with the hit man is the best part of the movie. The hit man is not pure bad and is acted great by whoever the actor was.
The characters are in a crowded city but everyone conveniently runs into the very people they are looking for with total ease which was ridiculous. My review, a charitable two trigger fingers up. That kid's character distracted from and dragged down the movie, in my opinion. Duval fans will be pleased with him as was I.

I liked that movie.
Being bad weather here, I just watched Lonesome Dove again.
Second Hand Lions is among my favorites.
Anything Duval is in is worth watching. He's aging, and will surely be hard to replace.

Hope you saw him in "The Killer Elite", with James Caan.

Hollywood has pretty much done away with good character actors and replaced them with pretty boys, glitz and glamor. Computer graphics for eye candy and lots of noise. Actors like Gary Cooper,Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart and many more could never make it in Hollywood today as they are not pretty enough. Charlton Heston is rolling in his grave.

I put "Bullitt" on once some years back so my son could see the great car chase. He didn't seem to appreciate it. Then we watched a new Angelina jolie movie on his lap top where sh'es flying through the air in her car shooting bad guys with ease through the sun roof, land on four wheels and driving on. All done with computers. How could the real thing compete with that.
There are two great character actors nowadays who I like in everything they do. Paul Giamatti and William H. Macy. They both have drifted into leading roles, too.

Duval played a bunch of bad guys before he got a lead role.
Like he got sideways with The Duke in True Grit.

Jack, do you buy DvDs? If so? I can suggest many great Made on Demand titles you will not see anywhere fo sale online--or in person--cept from Warner Bros--who also sell fro most of the major studios too.

I have always liked Duval and will check out this movie. Also, if you haven't seen it check him out in "The Great Santini" that is one of my favorite movies.

Movies are not just for young people, if they made good movie more older people would spend some money to see them. Some of old timers would love to get out and see a thinking man's movie that entertains them.
I think they lost understanding in Hollywood that it's the character actors that build the storyline. You get better acting on TV now than you do in the movies. Just my rant now because I really miss seeing a good movie

Also, I do believe he's a stand up guy and a down to earth guy, if you read some of his quotes.

Another was "The Apostle".
I agree about Giamatti and Macy, but don't forget Stanley Tucci, David Strathairn, and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. Steve Buscemi comes to mind, as does David Morse. There are others, and I can't agree that Hollywood has "done away with" character actors.

I just finished re-watching The Road this afternoon. Duval has a part in it, really good flick but I had forgotten just how depressing a movie it is!

Even a role with as little "meat" on it as the doctor in Phenomenon with John Travolta turns into a great performance by Duval. He put so much feeling in his affection for Travolta's character and his gentle nature was very well portrayed without being over done. He truly is a gifted actor with a wide range of abilities.
Anybody remember him as Major Frank Burns in the movie MASH or is role as a mentally ill soldier in Captain Newman, MD with Gregory Peck, Bobby Darin, and Angie Dickinson?

I love Tender Mercies........I have seen this type of stuff in real life............easy to identify with. Those that have not been fortunate enough to struggle on occasion will have a difficult time understanding the depth of the movie. As far as the OP and A Night in Old Mexico, it's Duvall..........,I agree. I like Duvall in Days of Thunder also because he can bring the character to such a heart-felt place. He always has honor in his characters that I have seen. I am however gonna look up a few movies mentioned here that I have not seen. Broken Trail with Duvall was VERY GOOD!!!!

I think Duvall is great, too, but the one I will really miss is Tom Selleck! I needn't worry, though, I'm about 10 years older than he is!

One of the best quotes ever came form Duval in "Apocalypse Now"...they are discussing taking this point in Vietnam, it comes up how great the surfing is there. One of his officers says "I don't know sir. That's charlie's point. That point is hairy, we lost so and so there..." Duval says "What do you know about surfing major?? You're from GD new Jersey!!!"
We still respond to our buddy from New Jersey that way anytime he tries to add wisdom to a situation.

Duval plays a great detective opposite Michael Douglas in Falling Down.
Any western he's in I can usually count on being good!

Apocalypse Now- I liked it when he said-
'I love the smell of napalm in the morning.'
And quite picking on folks from NJ!
Yes, it's also been my experience that they don't know much, but they are fast learners.

Surprised nobody has mentioned his (Robert Duval) recent role as the owner of a local gun range in "Jack Reacher". If you haven't seen it, do yourself the favor.

I hated that movie except the brief combat scenes. However-my favorite line in it was a duval line: (in a raspy voice) "I love the smell of napalm in the morning."

.... Can you just imagine the great Jack Elam showing up for a casting call these days??
The character actors are far and away more important to a good movie than the headliners, to me.

I watched the movie recently. Duval painted a convincing portrait of a sorry excuse for a father or husband. The one blessing was that he had spent most of his life with cows and away from most of humanity. A pitiful soul all and all. And if he did change for the better it wasn't by much. His bloated ego took a hit and he did, to his credit, realize that he needed it. The silver lining would be that Texas (or was it Arizona) would be a better place to live without him.

Duval's film debut was as the freaky/spooky next door neighbor in To Kill A Mockingbird with Gregory Peck. He wasn't in it much but he was very effective in the roll.
No one knew at that point that he would grow to be so passionate about kicking a pig.

Yes, it's also been my experience that they don't know much, but they are fast learners.

Not picking on them...actually, the fact is I never met anyone from New Jersey I didn't like.

I just watched a movie of Duvall's on Netflix. It was titled "Get Low".
In my opinion, it's well worth watching.

Duval was in a lot of westerns before he go his first character act.
He could ride a horse.
I will go to see a movie if the character actors are some that I like.
In the original True Grit---The charactor actor who was the horse trader--is amongst my most favorites.
Gregory Peck was told he was to do a scene with him in a movie and he asked him what props the man was using.
The director said a newspaper a cigarette and some string.
Peck said--he can have the cigarette and newspaper but not the string.
Blessings

Robert Duval, can play any role and be convincing, damn good actor.
Apocalypse Now, a great movie, he had a short appearance, that everyone remembers.
