This came from the home my mother grew up in Couquile OR (southern OR coast, old logging town.)

She said it is a caner that they would use on an old wood stove?

Seems awful large (10 gallon+) for a caner.

Anyone ever seen or used one like this? Is there any special function to the handles cause they look like they would almost hook on something.

Has this wooden stand off thing for inside the bottom.

I love old things and will find something to do with this, maybe a toy bin or just for blankets.

Looks just like the old tub my mom used to use as a canner. Gotta remember it had to hold several quart jars. Popular in the 1920s and 1930s. God luck with it.

Most wood/coal stoves that were used for cooking in the day had two round stove lids that could be removed so such a vessel would have direct exposure to the fire.

Note the print on the bottom, that is how this canner was used. Now-a-days canning is done with a pressure cooker, you have a "hot bath canner" from grannie's day.

Google hot bath canning & learn how it was done 'back then'.

I have 3 of them at the Polish club I run in MA , yup believe it or not they cook the best kielbasa for our kielbasa suppers and the best corned beef dinners on St Patricks day.

Keep it Pete

Thanks for the replies.

I am somewhat familiar with caning, as my wife use to do a lot, and she is afraid of pressure cookers, so the hot bath method is what we have always used. Now a days we just can hot pickles.

The caner looks like it could hold 20 some quarts and is a bit to deep, but mom said it was a caner and you all agree, so there it is.

And Pete uses them as a large crock pot, LOL, I want to eat with you someday.:)

I find beauty in its form and patina and I am happy to have it.

We had one just like it, we used it for clam boils.

That wooden piece probably let you double deck the jars......

Interesting thought. I figured it kept the jars at water temp rather then stove top temp if the jars were in contact with the bottom?

What type of heat source did you use, I am thinking this would work for crab if I used both turkey cooker burners?

We had a pit dug in the yard and we used drift wood.
