Question Anyone here::bacon chefs:::--cook bacon in a microwave? If so--explain.

Reason im asking is--I saw three different microwavable bacon cooking impliments for sale at wally world this morning.

these areallaround nine or ten bucks--so not bankaccount breaking.

Bacon Wave from: Emsen. Supposedly you can cook fourteen strips of bacon at a time. Made of plastic.

Mak.N Bacon.

Cooks fiveteen to eighteen slices of bacon.

Prepsolutions. Bacon grill with cover.Cooks seven to nine strips of bacon at a time.

Some questions. If you cook in a microwave--how do these come out?I like mine almost fully crisp with a tad of"play"in them. I dont like burnt or bacon coming out like cardboard.

What setting and for how long doyou set the microwave for?does the bacon come out the way I described I liked above?

I was wanting to try this method out because it saves on grease consumption and is supposed to be healthier. Also, I was looking for something that is a time saver in cooking too.

Id like to try this method by next weekif its worth trying? Otherwise-I fry them in a Lodge Cast iron skillet--but that method takes me about an hour and a half to fry a package. Reason it takes that long is--the apartment I live in--the stove has a fan that SHOULD ventilate--but cannot because they never made it where the grease and such would go outside-so--with the summer hear knocking on my door--I have to leave the place closed due to running the airconditioner. If I open the place--no AC--takes forever for the air to clear.

Any thoughts and advice from you bacon chefs will be welcome.

I cook my bacon in the microwave but I limit myself to one slice of bacon per day. I am too fat as it is. I take a paper plate and place a paper towel folded in half and place the thick sliced bacon on the towel. I then place another folded paper towel on top of the bacon. Micro wave on high for 45 seconds to 1 minute, you will have to experiment. Most of the grease is adsorbed by the paper towels.

I have seen videos on U-Tube demonstrating a couple of those microwave gadgets - seem to work pretty well I think.

We do all our bacon in the oven - takes about 15-17 minutes @ 375 or 400 - depends on oven - flip once at about 7-8 minutes - this is for the thicker slices.
You can do a lot of bacon this way - most restaurants do it like this I think.

As far as eliminating the excess fat - well, I save all the fat and use it for the potatoes at dinner

If I'm using a microwave, it's the same way 'arjay' mentioned, just a few with paper towels on plate.

My usual practice, and I think this is how many restaurants do it, is on a rack on a sheet pan in the oven. with two half-sheet pans, you can do a lot of bacon at once, keep it in the fridge, and re-heat it in the nuker if you want it hot, or use as-is as an ingredient in lots of things.

AH bacon, the anytime food, makes everything taste better.

Yep depending on the output of the microwave I usually go with 1 minuet per slice when I use to use one. You can also get one of the bacon microwave plates that have ribs so your bacon doesn't lay in the grease just use paper towel on top or you will be cleaning the grease off ever corner inside the microwave, when your done save the grease for other cooking.

Paper towels under and over the bacon.
The trick is to find the proper cooking time for your situation.
The time will vary depending on microwave power, amount of bacon and plate type.
Just like most everything else in life, timing is critical!
I also cook perfect rice in the microwave, but that's thread drift!

My wife does it, I do not like it. I cook mine in a cast iron frypan then cook my eggs in the grease. I am skinny and have low collistrol.

Yummy! I have one of the bacon racks for the microwave oven and it produces perfect bacon. It is a bugger to clean the ribbing so I am going to re-read this thread tomorrow morning and try the paper towel/plate suggestions. Thanks to all for the suggestions.

My wife has some super special bacon tray for the micro. It works, but I think any micro safe plate will work.
The trick is, as mentioned before, paper towels above and below the bacon.
The good thing is it will come out straight if that's important.

If you're really lazy (like me),put some butter in a bowl and nuke it for 10 seconds.Swish it around to coat the bowl, break an egg in it and nuke for 40 seconds.

I bake my bacon. Have for over 3 years. A cooling rack inside a half sheet pan is all you need.

paper plate with 4-folded paper towels. Bacon strips on top, cover with another doubled paper towel. About 3-4 minutes, rotate the plate half way through if your oven is not a carousel. Comes out nice and crisp and not burnt. M-wave bacon cookers are not necessary. Bacon is the only meat that ever sees the inside of my microwave.

My bacon is very thick cut, hickory smoked, salt cured, so it takes about 4 minutes to get 2 slices the way I like them-totally crispy and golden brown. I use a plastic ribbed plate that I got at Walmart, and cover the slices with a paper towel to cut down on grease splatter. I have to experiment with each new package of bacon to get the cooking time right. When it is done, pour the grease into a coffee can and keep it on top of the stove, so that it is handy when you fry eggs or cook green beans. Yum, yum, & yum!

I cook mine outside on a weber propane grill. You just have to do it on a low heat or else it'll catch fire, it works great, and the bacon even has a little smoky flavor to it. And it keeps all the stink outside.

We nuke our bacon, with the exception of when boss unit needs drippings for gravy.

We've got a couple of trays, and we put a paper towel on the tray, about 4 slices of bacon in the layer, and paper towels between layers. Bacon comes out perfect.

Bacon tray goes in the dishwasher, and the paper towels in the trash.

Microwaved bacon is for rookies.

Here's the way pros do it. Line pan with foil and lay thick sliced bacon directly on foil. The grease helps it cook.

Put in cold oven set to 400 degrees. Turn oven on and set timer to 20 minutes. Don't bother to turn mid way, it's not necessary. Check a couple minutes before timer goes off but it usually takes about 22 minutes to get mine medium crispy like I like it.

I put a piece of wax paper on the counter and then a double layer of paper towels. Drain bacon on towels and use a couple more to blot the grease. Perfect bacon every time without much effort.

We do ours like Arjay quite often when making BLT's. Works great.

And you can put the paper towels on top of you dog food for a while. Enough will drain to make Ole Biscuit eater happy.

At breakfast I use bacon presses in the cast iron skillet. And cook eggs in the grease. Like Mr. P. Tato mentions. The difference here is I too have low Cholesterol like Tato but I'm not skinny no mo.

I do our bacon in the oven. Use a maga-lite pan with raised sides and a wire rack to elevate the bacon. Cook it at 400 for about 15 minutes, no need to flip it. I cook up the whole package. Then I let it cool and wrap it with paper towels and freeze it in a large ziplock bag. Then when we want bacon, just pull what we need for the meal out of the freezer, wrap it in paper towel and place on paper plate and flash cook it (high power for about 15 seconds) in the microwave. Works out great as I have pre-cooked bacon ready to go at a moments notice and it comes out perfect. You may need to try a couple of times to get yours to come out the way you want it as your oven and microwave may be different than ours and we are at 2400 ft. elevation. Hope this helps.

Cast iron skillet for me............BUT, for those of you who use an oven, try this once in awhile.....
Add 1 teaspoon (or more) cayenne pepper to 1 cup of brown sugar. Sprinkle that mix on one side of the bacon and bake in oven for 15-20 minutes at 350. (place strips on a rack in a foil lined pan for easier cleanup.)

You'll become addicted!!

We got a bacon wave for the quick bacon fix. It actually works pretty good once you get the time figured out for the way you like your bacon. Makes it easy when you only want to do a couple pieces or so and don't want to make a mess or you're in a hurry. We were skeptical but a friend liked his and for the cost it was worth a shot. I'm going to try making potato chips with it one of these days.

We call that "Candied Bacon". Never used pepper though. I'll have to try that out.

First, I have to view EQGuy's claim to limit himself to one slice of bacon per day with skepticism; I'm just not sure it can be done. Just like the number of guns any one person should own, the number of pieces of bacon any one person should eat is---one more!

Second, on the rare occasion I do bacon in the microwave, it's the paper towel method. Bacon is meant to be fried in a skillet, until it's crispy enough that it sticks out straight when you pick it up, and cracks if you try to bend it. The grease is for frying anything that needs fried. I particularly like cutting those tube biscuits in half, then making a cheap copy of Indian fry bread, using the bacon grease. Just a few seconds in the hot grease, turn it over for a few more seconds (it turns a nice golden brown), then onto paper towels to absorb the extra grease, and serve instead of sliced bread.

Third, Momma sometimes makes me eat turkey bacon (I know, kinda like saying 'trustworthy politician'). It's not a bad substitute, but it just ain't bacon. BUT, cooked in the microwave on high, between the paper towels, for about five minutes or so--in my microwave--then allowed to cool a couple minutes, it's close enough to real bacon to make a pretty good bacon'n'mater sammich. Sorta like eating Taco Bell; it ain't real Mexican, but close enough to remind you what 'real' is. Acebow

Sorry Ringo, couldn't help myself. Wood holds the hickory flavoring in the bacon.

Interesting. I am going to try that. I will experiment with how much to put on each slice.

I cook my bacon on a Presto brand electric griddle. I like my bacon full rendered and extremely crisp.

I also use the griddle for toasted sandwiches, pancakes, and sometimes french toast.

(If I was to do it again, I would buy the biggest available model, so I could cook a whole pound of bacon at once.)

Cheese on top as you nuke. Have aforementioned bacon already done (in the nuke)

Slide the cooked egg and melted cheese out on top of lightly toasted bread.

Add bacon

Voila nuke egg sandwich.

That quick? Ill buy a cheapo package of bacon this week and use it to test this out on.Thanks to you guys, ive been hooked on Wrights thick cut bacon for several months now. Usually ,ill cook up an entire package at the same time--then limit myself to two full slices a day--as I use them on sandwiches. A package lasts me at least a week.

You can do a lot of bacon this way - most restaurants do it like this I think.

As far as eliminating the excess fat - well, I save all the fat and use it for the potatoes at dinner
I needed info on the oven method too. This also is definitely doable. Do you have any special pan to put the bacon on?or just use a pizza pan-or like--and lay them flat?

Yep depending on the output of the microwave I usually go with 1 minuet per slice when I use to use one. You can also get one of the bacon microwave plates that have ribs so your bacon doesn't lay in the grease just use paper towel on top or you will be cleaning the grease off ever corner inside the microwave, when your done save the grease for other cooking.
I recenty picked up one of those and have used it to make the morning star brand""bacon""on it. Their bacon is made up of soy bean andaint bad but--has a wierd "bacon bits" taste and makes me want real bacon even more.

The trick is to find the proper cooking time for your situation.
The time will vary depending on microwave power, amount of bacon and plate type.
Just like most everything else in life, timing is critical!
I also cook perfect rice in the microwave, but that's thread drift!
Looks like ill have to buy a couple of packages of the cheapo Oscar Meyer brand bacon to do experiments on.

I had trouble cleaning mine after cooking some of that Morning Star soybean bacon on it. It left a yellowish-looking goo on it after cooking and took forever toclean.

Heh heh, your brave cooking eggs in a micro. Those ill still have to do the old fashioned way--stovetop. I also use butter when making certain eggs--scrambled for instance. Man that butter makes them come out moist--which is the way I like em best.

I learned the seond part the hard way.I tried coking two raw hamburger patties in a micro--and they did come out OK--but OK at best. I still didnt trust eating them though and tossed them to a stray dog who enjoyed them.

I thought of doing that too and I do have an electric outdoor grill. My prob is--very small front and back porch space and id have to run a cord outside.

Break an egg into a measuring cup, stir with a fork just enough to break the yolk, 40 -50 seconds on high will set the egg just enough to fit perfect on a bagel or English muffin.

That looks easy enough, and I had wondered on using foil too. During the hot months, this is how I want to make bacon.

Another excellent device for us one man bands is the toaster oven.
I just did an open top leftover meatloaf sandwich.
I put in a slice of wheat bread on foil and got it going in toast mode.
Then I added the slice of meatloaf.
Toasted that for a while and then melted in a slice of cheddar cheese.
Plate it, Add some onion, hot sauce.
You are good to go!

Whats a bacon press? Is it something that sits on top of the rim of a frying pan? that sounds good too--and I do save what grease I get from frying. Nothing like making most anything using it. When I bake biscuits, bacon and such--I use a dab of it to grease the pans with. The taste also goes well when making cornbread.

Works out great as I have pre-cooked bacon ready to go at a moments notice and it comes out perfect. You may need to try a couple of times to get yours to come out the way you want it as your oven and microwave may be different than ours and we are at 2400 ft. elevation. Hope this helps.

Hi Pete, everything here ive read helps.Sounds like an average oven time is from fiveteen to twenty minutes--so is very helpful. I like the fact that it greatly cuts back on cooking time and grease in the air.
