Brought a new family member home from work today! Updated with pics, post 19
I am the parts manager at a new car dealer. This morning one of the custodians was in the parts room and happened to mention that there was a cat "stuck" in a car in the body shop. When I questioned him about it he said he wasn't really stuck, he just wouldn't come out.
Being the cat lover that I am I headed for the body shop to see what I could do. About the same time I landed there a lady from the shelter just down the street arrived on the scene too.
When one of the techs pulled the car in to work on it he opened the hood and there was a cat on top of the engine that promptly ran in to the corner of the engine compartment and had gotten himself behind the master cylinder.
The lady from the shelter and I carefully extricated the cat from the car and found we had a beautiful, double pawed, male Maine coon cat about 8-10 weeks old.
She took him back to the shelter and checked him all out and he was fine. I stopped on the way home from work and adopted him.
The car was a fleet vehicle and had been sitting out back for a week so we figured he had stowed away at some point in the last week.
I had no intention of adopting another cat when I went to work today, but the little guy needed a home and I'm a sucker for a kitten! I'm in the process of integrating him into the household with my other two shelter cats now. I think he's going to be fine!

Sometimes critters can use all the help they can get. Who knows what fate you may have saved the little fellow from? Thanks for caring, Mike. "Ya done good!"

I'm going to try to get some pics and post them this weekend. He's a pretty stressed little guy right now and making himself pretty scarce. I've got him in a dog crate in the living room with food, water, a litter box, and I cardboard box he can hide in. Taking him out every hour or two so I can bond with him and to slowly introduce him to the other cats. I don't think he's had much human contact at this point so I'm taking it slow and easy. I also figure that he has not ever had to use a cat box and I want to make sure he will before I turn him loose!
I'm hoping by this weekend I can give him the run of the house, but I don't want to leave him to his own devices until I can be here to keep and eye on things!

In my time, I have adopted a few stray cats, too. It is not as noble an act as rescuing a dog, but nevertheless commendable.
Well done.

Every time you give a homeless animal a place in your life, you put another gold star on your page in God's journal. You are guaranteed a place in heaven.

Good for you. This is why I don't volunteer at a shelter. I'd have a house full of cats and no wife.
Then again...

The last time I volunteered at a shelter, I ended up with a very loud Domestic Short Hair cat named Bootsy Collins.
He just turned 19, and is in good health (knock on wood.)
These days, I just fundraise/donate. This has kept the rescues down to only seven more cats and a couple of dogs.

OK, now to prove it really happened, here are some pics.
He officially has a name now, I'd like you all to meet Axl!
He is bonding with his dad quite nicely, cries all night though and has kept me up the last two nights. All in all though he is settling in and his fear is fading fast.
He is a cutie, pics are a little blurry but I'm sure I'll have some better ones at some point.

He has extra "toes" on his front paws that almost look like thumbs. I'll try to get a close up pic at some time and post one.

Admire you for taking in a stray. I hate to see animals abandoned or neglected. Still, my dislike of cats would stop me from doing what you did. I might contact a cat lover friend to see if they'd help though. Puppies on the other hand are dangerous for me to look at. One look at a cute puppy and you'd have to tear me away.

Kudos to you for your wonderful act of kindness! Hopefully, he will have a long, healthy, and happy life in his new home.
Have you given him a name yet? Maine Coons are such beautiful cats.
And yes, photos are definitely wanted.

We have named him Axl. Figured his name ought to be automobile related and my wife came up with Axl. I gave it the rock and roll spelling!
I'l try to post some better pics this weekend he's out of the crate tonight, calming down and settling in so I should be able to get some good pics this weekend.

I shared your post with my wife, much to our delight. In the 33 years we have been married, we have rescued 16 cats through our vet. We have 3 left. They all led happy, pampered lives, asked little and gave much.
Walkin Jack was right.

I wish I could have a cat again, but not with this generation of dogs. But for the long fur, I would like a Maine Coon.

One fine looking cat....
Reminds me of a similar cat we had years ago, like 1984 or so. We named him Josie Wales....
Good on you for rescuing a stray. Many Karma points.

Mike, some one dropped this furball off at the nursing home today. My wife sent me this pic with the caption "awwww".
It's on the way here. How do you say no to that?

I guess I'm not the only sucker for a kitten! He's a cute little bugger. Lends new meaning to the phrase "he's, (or she's) all ears." Glad to see another little one is getting a home.

Brought a new family member home from work today! Updated with pics
Mike,
Congratulations to you on your adoption. It appears that Axl has just won the "Pet Adoption Lottery"! He probably could not have found a better, more caring parent.
I also agree with the other responses - maine coons are an excellent cat breed.

Thats' a beautiful kitten. Good on everyone who adopts and cares for abandoned or stray pets. Our last two "fosters" turned into "rescues." I blame my wife, but she knows I'm a soft touch when it comes to critters in need of a family. I can't imagine not having pets.
