I saw the thread about aliens and was reminded that I've been curious about the phaser replicas supposedly sold at Star Trek conventions, etc.

These vary a lot in detail and I think some shoot fake rays.

Does anyone here know much about them and price ranges?

Are there dealers on the Net? Has anyone bought from them?

I want a general summary of the matter, including quality comments.

For the original series style, the handle seems to also be the magazine. Do they fit the frame snugly, or are they loose?

Any Trekkers here?

I recall William Shatner writing that the Phasers available at the Comicons or conventions were better quality than the original ones used during filming.

There are three types. Type 1: the mini type, Type 2: the pistol type, and type 3: the rifle type. The picture of the phaser in the 'alien' thread had a mini type inset into the top of it. The earlier shows had distinct types, I don't know if that changed as production went on.

There are better examples, and you get what you pay for. If you can't find (or stomach) attending a convention, eBay is your friend.

(and no I don't have one, nor do I live in my parents basement.). :D

A ton on E Bay ! Most look like newer models but I didn't look that hard .. That was a GREAT show Still watch every now and then :)

I've never had a star wreck phaser, but I did buy a toy Next Gen tricorder off eBay once. Was a facility engineer in a large factory, at the time. Had all kinds of real gizmos in a "utility" belt. Used it to "analysis" broken down equipment for a few days, just as a goof. It was in my kids' toy box for a long time (they never got into Star Trek), but I haven't seen, or even thought about it, in years.

I have no answers, but this is my favorite question ever asked on this forum.

I just saw a full size and hefty one at the Billings Toys R Us, on clearance, about a month ago. It was made by whoever has the current toy lisc. I remember thinking that someone would probably try to rob a bank with it.

Note the positive reviews.

Tragically, a fully functional model is not available to the public.

Looks pretty good and the price is less than feared. I may look at one when I have some spare change.

How was the fit and finish on the one in Billings? Does the magazine fit the receptacle well/snugly? What batteries does it use?

Ever since I watched the original show back in college, I've wanted one. But they always struck me as a weapon designed by an engineer who wasn't much into guns. The barrel is too close to the hand, and there's no trigger guard. An AD with one if real, would be a grave matter.

I wonder which handguns there'll really be in the 23rd Century.

As much as I liked T'Pol, I think the phasers on that series, ST Enterprise, were sort of shapeless blobs with no appeal. The original series seemed to take more time with design.

Hollywood is so anti-gun that I doubt they consulted anyone who might really have good ideas for these future arms. But the idea of locking Phaser 1 into Phaser 2 as its power pack makes sense. The amplified power would make it a more dangerous item, easier to use, although neither looks to point like a good pistol should.

I had some toy ray guns as a kid, inspired by such shows as Rocky Jones, Space Ranger. I suspect that I'd have used the Ruger standard .22 auto as the basis of whatever I designed, had I been commissioned to design the guns. The Baby Nambu, minus the grip safety, might also have merit.

Klingon phasers look really unwieldy and unappealing.

I was in a hurry when I briefly examined it. I remember remarking to my wife, hey look at this. She was less impressed, but it had been a long day and we have five small children each seeking a toy. No one else was interested in the phaser. I thus did not examine it in depth and remember only my impression that it seemed well made and realistic.

I vaguely recall Gene Roddenberry being interested in guns, but I could be mistaken. I remember Sulu having a .38 revolver in one episode for some reason.

I imagine the Federation had strict phaser control laws. But when phasers are outlawed, only outlaws will have phasers....

For the longest time ray guns were considered less violent on tv than bullets, perhaps because they were "fantasy". Thus the 80s GI Joe cartoon had Joe and Cobra armed with lasers and not bullets. I would surmise this is part of the reason that Star Trek used phasers.

Though Kirk did make gunpowder to shoot the Gorn...and there was that time they were arming the "Yangs" with flintlocks.

Maybe it has shown up...

Maybe today's version of the phaser is the Taser. Just like the 3 1/2" floppy disc and the cell flip phone originated on that show.:)

Oh, the food synthesizer and the transporter I'm still waiting on.

Remember the oddly held.....

Remember the oddly held ray guns Flash Gordon used? I had something called an 'Astro Ray' gun that was a flashlight that shot darts. Even back then it had to be 'tactical'.

You use a regular phaser to fight your way to the armory and grab one of these, a rifle phaser. Then you and Captain James Tiberius Kirk can annihilate the bad aliens that somehow were able to transport onto the Enterprise.

Unlike bullets fired on a plane at 35,000 feet, the small personal phasers have minimal risk of causing extreme explosive decompression in the vacuum of deep space. However, sustained fire from one of these assault phasers can melt even inorganic substances such as a ship's hull.

Organisms such as carbon-based or silicon-based humanoids can be instantly vaporized, depending on the power setting. "Stun" setting may not always work as intended, depending on the organism's nervous system.

Many debates have ensued on how best to store these (at what power settings and corresponding effects on charge retention), whether they should be kept locked or readily accessible to anyone, how much charge capacity they should be limited to, whether they should be carried openly in the presence of civilians, etc., but those are discussions that can be done on another star date.

I have a real one used by Mr. Spock to dispatch many Romulans and Klingons.
Fully documented by letters from Spock, Kirk, and Star Fleet Command. He was allowed to keep it when he retired. I am selling it for the family.
I can't guarantee that it works. I think the power cell is dead.
$10,000

First "I'll take it" followed by a money order sent to P.O. Box.......

I thought this was supposed to be a private deal between you and I. The phaser for the Roettinger revolver. What happened? Did someone tell you that the Roettinger gun was just a plastic replica and didn't work? That's a lie, I tell you! Are you mad because I wouldn't throw something else in? What did I do that let you down?
