filled out nics form incorrect asked for new form"told no, fill out rest of form" denied handgun purchase by academy. they said 30 days before reapplying. can i try some where else or do i wait?

That is Academy's policy. They are not allowed to coach you on the answers, and a wrong form puts you on a no-go list for the chain for 30 days. You can buy elsewhere, but not Academy.

It is their store, their rule.

Interesting lesson for us. In hindsight, I guess you could have stopped and walked away without finishing, and gone back later, or another day. Thanks for the heads-up.

I would have been seriously upset. I would politely tell the manager that the policy is idiotic and that he had just lost a customer for life.

Probably that "Alien" question that tripped you up. Just worded tricky.
I would go elsewhere, also.

I don't see how getting an extra form is 'coaching' but thanks for the warning.

It isn't. I wrote that phrase to mean that they are not allowed to go down the form telling what to put in step by step. They can point you to the detailed instructions if you stop and ask first.

They just don't let you start over if you mess up, and can't stop you to say "wait, that's going to get you denied".

And you only get one form.

I was told by a manager there that it is their policy.

I did the same sorta thing once too. I went to a box store and was answering all the questions truthfully and when it asked if I was addicted to any drugs or alcohol I truthfully answered yes ( recovering dipsomaniac). Well the clerk said "sorry", I went outside to a pay phone and called ATF. lovely lady laffed and said,,, "no problem,, we dont care about that. next time ck. "no". went back the next day and bought the gun.

This is what happens when control comes from the top down or from some distant central authority. You get insane executive level orders that turn their employees into bureaucrats rather than people who are allowed to use their common sense in such situations. It is bad enough when this happens in a large nationwide business, but it is disastrous when it happens in government.

That is why the US Constitution was written the way it was and thank God as that document is all that prevents the Federal government from confiscating every gun in the hands of law abiding citizens in this nation.

If you noticed that you made an error prior to giving the 4473 to the FFL and background check performed, why not just strike through the mistake, initial and date, then correct? Why insist on a new 4473?

And what if you get denied because the clerk made an input error? I doubt you would get your BG money refunded.

Just watched a guy mess up on a qualifying question on a form at my lgs. That's it, goodbye. No new form. It all depends on what you mess up on.
