'I finally found some leather 8" lace up leather boots that are actually waterproof. I really like these and they fit my fat feet. I've had them about three months and maybe would like to start cleaning or conditioning them. They're dark brown and I don't care if the product changes the color some. What do you guys use? I've got mink oil I used in the past on other boots.

Mink oil works fine, but for workboots I give them a good saddle soaping scrub down first and let them dry, then apply the oil. I like pure neatsfoot oil, but waterproofing isn't much of an issue for me.

on my leather boots, I have always used a product called Sno-Seal. It is mostly beeswax and is best applied to boots that have been cleaned with saddle soap and then warmed with a blow dryer. I apply it heavier around seams and joints between uppers and soles and then go back over with the blow dryer to melt it in. It will discolor leather darker, but it will definitely water proof and protect the leather.

Another vote for Sno Seal. Had a pair of Browning Vibrams (pre-GoreTex) that about every other year, I'd place in oven at lowest setting for 10 minutes, and then rub Sno Seal in. Boots lasted over 20 years and remained waterproof.

Usually just whatever mink oil I have around. I have also used the "hose 'em down with silicone spray" technique in a pinch.

I've used a product called Montana Pitch Blend for over 25 years. It does great but like most products needs to be reapplied every so often.

Nikwax works very well. Snowseal works pretty well too. I lean towards Nikwax.

What boots did you get?

I put a lot of miles on boots bird hunting in the upper midwest and the southeast every year and I hate wet feet. Even with the most careful maintenance I've never had a pair of boots stay dry more than a season and a half or so. Goretex is a scam. The construction of the boot is more important--moccasin toes don't last. The closer the upper is to being made of one piece the better.
