But, we go to the Y and get really good workouts.
Eyeballs can get a workout at gyms! 😉. Both good and bad!
I prefer home, because of the time driving, some sanitary issues, and as you have mentioned others at a gym can be less than good workout companions!

I just found out the calorie count for 1 cup of whole cashews.
My favorite snack has 600 calories per cup!

A cup of cashews is a mighty large serving!

All this Greek yogurt combined is 640 calories, which is eight servings.

Yeah, my favorite yogurt's 90 calories per serving. I had that with a quarter cup of Grape Nuts instead.

Yes. Love that stuff: 2 cups and a banana is a great 264 calorie breakfast.

Had a really good workout at the Y. The usual, spin class, lifting, warm pool then steam room.
Today however, I pushed myself a bit harder. Not only will it be 2 days until our next Y visit but we're going to a dinner put on my my wife's employer.

Tomorrow's a planned rest day. I still have lotsa leatherwork to do and my wife's working.
Wednesday's gonna be a home stationary bike and treadmill workout day. Just calorie burning.
Then back to the Y on Thursday.

We got our glad rags on and headed on out to the dinner.

I didn't really try to stick to my diet but I didn't stuff myself either.
I even had dessert. Some pumpkin pie, whipped cream and a brownie.
My wife kept track of the calories and it turns out that I still have just over 100 calories left for the day. Maybe I'll apply that as a credit for tomorrow. I'm full.
All I had up until that time was a 140 calorie granola bar and a 90 calorie yogurt.

In that picture, I remind me of my Dad.

The weather has been cold and rainy here since last Friday afternoon. This morning I got in my first good walk since Friday morning. A brisk 5.75 miles, and the color of the day was yellow.

'Nuther yucky dreary day out here in the mountains of West Virginia.
That's okay though, it's a rest day anyway.
My wife's at work and I just finished punching stitch holes in a leather holster. After a short break to rest my gimpy hand, it's back to work.

Default Eating Question?

Do you find with cold weather (maybe you Houston guys are not experienced with this?) that it is harder to eat properly? You know more comfort type foods, more carbs, and being indoors more?

I find that I can eat poorly year round. If I'm stuck inside it gives me more opportunity to eat poorly, more often. I just walked down to Sam Walton's Market and spent $15 on a digital kitchen scale. Now I can accurately measure my bad snacks. Stacy's Bagel Chips, 1.0 ounce, 130 calories... not so bad. An ounce of unsalted peanuts is 180 calories.

Edit The walk to Walmart broght my total walking to just under 11 miles for the day.

I avoid all grains and sugar. Quickest way to lose and maintain weight.
Meat, fish, eggs, vegetables & nuts are my staples.

Over the coming month or two I have a couple of social events to attend where I will need to wear a decent business suit. This morning I pulled out a charcoal gray pinstripe suit out of my closet. I bought the suit in 1990 and the last time I remember wearing it was in 1991, then I outgrew it.

I took the suit to a local tailor, put it on, and the old Chinese gentleman started pinning it up for alterations. He said, you have lost a lot of weight. I said I gave away the big suits, but kept this one because it was close. He said he was going to have to almost re-cut the entire suit.

There have been definite clothing milestones over the last couple of years of weight loss. Taking a 26 year old suit that probably cost me $300 in 1990 to a tailor and agreeing to have $178 in alterations done to it to make it look good on me today is a definite milestone I'll remember. It will be ready a week from tomorrow.

I think it's not so much as eating properly as it is sticking to a diet that's low in fat and carbs.
My theory is that our bodies crave fat and carbs during the colder months as a form of natural adaptation.
I believe that increasing body fat in the winter was a necessity for survival. It provided insulation and fuel to help to keep our core warm.
1 pound of fat contains 3500 calories.
Not so much necessary in today's world.

I know that the Blackfoot used to prepare a kinda Power Bar called moki-maani made of dried crushed meat and berries held together with dried fat as a survival food for winter.

We dug out our old digital postal scale and started weighing portions.

11 miles? That's lotsa calories burned.

It is nice when someone notices the fruits of your labor.
I have an old suit that I haven't worn in a long time. Maybe one day I'll dig it out and see if it fits.

Staying busy is my best method of avoiding too many snacks but I get lazy sometimes and it is easy to have a few snacks more than I should!

Same as pemmican. Had a scout leader that made some. Good for a quick energy boost but pretty sure bear scat would taste better.

Got in a 5.75 mile walk this morning. The shoes I wore this morning were Mizuno Wave Paradox 2s. Here are before and after pictures with the mid-sole showing through the outer sole on the left shoe. I'm a knuckle dragger, not a toe dragger. I power off of my flat left foot where the heavy wear is showing. When the soles of my shoes get to this point at best they have two long walks left in them, and I risk getting blisters on my toes because my feet move differently inside heavily worn shoes. Time to retire this set of Mizunos and bring out a new pair of Brooks Transcend 2s, in red to match my red compression leggings.

I'll bet you go through lotsa shoes.
I try to make it a point to stick to dirt trails with my hiking boots. Don't want to wear out my knobbies prematurely.

My wife made some kale soup today. She gives it a good boil and adds broths and spices. It's pretty good, healthy, low in calories and fat and filling.
Until today, I've only had a taste. Today she gave me a bowl of her fresh made kale soup. It was really very good.
I also discovered another thing about kale.
It really cleaned my pipes.
Just gotta make sure to leave it alone tomorrow morning before we go to the Y.

I go through about 10 to 12 pair of running shoes per year. After taking those pictures, I put the Mizunos back on and went to the grocery store, Boot Barn to look at western boots, and then on to Cost Plus World Market. By the time I got home I had put over 11.5 miles on those shoes for the day and they were definitely worn out. I stripped the shoe laces to make cat toys with and sent the balance of the shoes on a journey to shoe heaven. Oh ya, I took a picture of the shoes before pulling the laces. It is amazing how fast the sole opens when it starts to go.

The forecast for the morning is 51 degrees, rain, and a north wind of 15 to 30 mph. I have not been to the gym since last Saturday. I'll try to get in an hour on the elliptical trainer. The rain is supposed to clear out as the temperature drops. Maybe I'll put on my GoreTex duck hunting gear and go for a short walk later in the day.

A freeze is forecast for Friday morning (Ya, sure... maybe in the suburbs). I'm planning what to wear for a predawn walk then. If nothing else, it will be interesting to see if anyone else is out walking or running in weather like that.

But, we go to the Y and get really good workouts.
Great home strength system that is cheap and effective would be the TRX system ( or similar strap based body weight suspension system like WOSS, check Amazon). Need very little space when being used, none when stored and allows for a full strength workout. Add a couple miles of walking and you have a full workout for 90% of the general public, let alone a more "senior" group. The original TRX strap system was designed by a navy seal for a portable workout system when deployed God knows where. Before spending a lot of money on a home gym weight machine I would recommend you try this type of workout. A setup will cost you about 40 bucks and if you don't like it you can always go the home gym machine route. But you just might be surprised, and hey it's cheap.

The original TRX strap system was designed by a navy seal for a portable workout system when deployed God knows where. They have a TRX room at the YMCA. Might try it one day.
Gotta find some workout videos on it on YouTube first.

Had a bad sinus/sore throat thing going on the last few days and have noticed that the Meds effects are much stronger with my reduced intake diet. Even over the counter NyQuil grogged me pretty hard. What ever they put in the prescription cough syrup had me wide awake most of the night! Going to be a nasty day at my shop today as kwselke noted. I need to get a new pair of boots myself but haven't wanted to fight the Xmas traffic/shoppers.

I did not attempt an early walk this morning. The rains passed through quickly, I could have gotten one in, but I had planned to be lazy. Got in about 2.5 miles walking on errands and did a 45 minute routine on an elliptical trainer after lunch.

The local weather propaganda for early tomorrow is now a low of 35 degrees with a 10 mph wind. I can handle that.

I'm going to put on a base coat of size L compression leggings, followed by 2XL poly pro long johns (wonder where size 2XL came from), then a pair of shorts. My upper body coverage will be poly-pro undershirt, cotton turtleneck, and a hooded sweatshirt. Add a Carhartt watch cap and I'll be toasty warm, or come home early a shivering wimp. I've sat motionless in duck blinds in far worse weather.

Most Y's and othe clubs offer an orientation session. Let us know what you think. Nice thing about a strap suspension system is the ability to change the difficulty with a simple change in body angle. Less lean, less resistance.

Lol. I always try to find a treadmill with a great view ahead, if you know what I mean. Kind of like hanging a carrot on a stick in front of a donkey to keep him moving.

Just finished a 6.1 mile morning walk. It was 40 degrees when I started and 38 degrees when I finished. There was a 10 mph north wind blowing, but I walked mostly east/west residential streets and the houses and large trees blocked a good bit of the wind. It was a very nice walk. I need to find a good pair of light weight warm gloves.

Wife and I did some time on the treadmill and stationary bike.
Tomorrow, it's off to the Y. No spin on Saturday, so we're gonna do lotsa time on the ellipticals along with the rest of our workout.

Good morning all, cold here in Houston this morning but mid 50's later and warm 70's tommorow. Guess I will do some outside yard cleanup for my exercise! Lots of winter weeds kicking in and tree cleanup. Holidays and cold have me going the wrong direction so have to pay more attention to what I am eating and exercising.

I push myself when I feel good, and many times get out and exercise when I do not want to or feel like it, but I always pay attention to the feedback my body gives me. Last night I slept for 10 to 11 hours, six or seven hours is a normal night for me. I weighed in at 188.4 pounds which is good, but did not feel like going out in the cold and to walk. So I decided to relax.

I had a late breakfast and decided I needed to buy some hearts of Romaine for salads. Off I went to Trader Joe's, my lettuce dealer. Directly across from TJ's is a Whole Foods Market that has a beer bar. I had not had a beer since Thanksgiving Day, it was 12:45 PM on a holiday shopping Saturday, so I bet the bar would be open. Sure enough the bar was manned, so I broke my beer fast and had a Karbach Mother in Lager, Munich Dunkel Lager. Karbach is a local craft brewer that was recently purchased by AB Inbev, but Mother in Lager tastes nothing like Bud Light!

After savoring my lager I walked across the street to TJ's and bought two packages of hearts of Romaine. TJ's also had an interesting looking bottle of No Label Brewing Co. of Katy, TX 5th Barleywine that wanted to come home with me. The whole point of physical fitness is so you can enjoy life. Today I am enjoying life. Have a great day!

We intended to start the day at the Y with the elliptical machines but our two favorites were in use. That's okay, we selected a coupla Lifecycles, set them on the weight loss program and rode those for half an hour.
I felt strong today and had a really good workout.
I must be burning fat, I'm getting stronger and sticking to under 1600 calories a day.
My weight was a pound down from Thursday.

Took a day off today. Gonna hit it hard at the Y tomorrow. Spin class, lifting, ellipticals, warm pool, sauna or steam room, maybe both.
I plan to push harder and do extra sets lifting. We won't be back to the Y until Thursday.
Still sticking to under 1600 calories.

I slept from 9:00 PM last night to a bit after 7:00 AM this morning. My body is doing its sleep thing and I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts. It was raining when I got up so I did not do my morning walk, but did 50 minutes of interval work on the elliptical after breakfast. I wonder if Ballast Point Victory at Sea Porter can reproduce what yesterday's barleywine ale did. Sleep is good.

Good workout at the Y today. I pushed a bit harder as planned. A few more sets and reps.
However, the warm pool was closed, so my wife and I decided to have our chicken Caesar salad in our home jacuzzi instead.

Interesting thing, as I lose weight, I'm not really interested in having a reward meal.
Now I'm thinkin' of orderin' different cigars as a reward. I've always wanted to try Arturo Fuente Brevas Royales coronas and they come in a convenient 5 pack. I'll get 5 natural wrappers and 5 maduro for hitting my next goal.
All together they cost less than a pizza from Pizza Hut and I'll enjoy them more.

My wife's talking about getting a new jigsaw puzzle for hitting her next goal.

Default Different Exercise Program

You could modify this for lower as well as upper body!
Not sure about the net weight loss though !

I've been doing a Couch to 5K in a Month program. It's an app on the iPhone. Walk some, run some, build up to 3.1 in five weeks running three times a week. I've started it about three times in the last year, but something always interrupts me, and I get off the routine. This time I've done it as much in a row as I can, so that after 2.5 weeks, I'm on week 4, day two today. I lift for 45 minutes first, then run. Our Y has a 13 lap to a mile elevated track, but it's only 3 lanes, and in the morning the old ladies go three wide. My lumbering butt has almost killed a couple of them rounding a corner, so I do it on the treadmill now . . .

In my early forties I became so fat the uppers on my two pair of western boots would no longer fit on my plump legs. I was not a cowboy, but am a native Texan who appreciates the cowboy image. After my recent trek to Cotulla, TX I've wanted a pair of boots to go along with my Panama straw Stetson.

I'm having a suit altered, shoes repaired, and there is the endless replacement of running/walking shoes. I wanted a pair of cowboy boots to round out my new wardrobe. Lizard, ostrich (emu), or maybe shark would be perfect. I just could not find it within myself to come up with the money needed for decent quality exotic. Then I thought quality cow does not really go out of style. I found a good deal on a high quality calf skin boot. They arrived today, and my feet popped into them perfectly.

I walked 5.65 miles before light this morning. Walked for a haircut, and other errands today. After lunch I did a 35 minute workout on an elliptical machine. Being proud of my shoes, clothes, and how I look keeps me going. These boots are a good inspiration for me. This post is not about my boots, it's about everyday things that will keep you going towards a better you. I'm glad I can wear cowboy boots again, and am pleased with what I got.
