Scope for 44 mag handgun?

I like Leupolds also, but they are pricey. Have you tried Burris? I know they have a good reputation. The problem you have to contend with is the recoil from the .44 Magnum. Would a red dot sight suit your needs? You might be better off saving up for a Leupold and doing it right once.

Good luck,

Dave

You can also look for a used Leupold. It's not often, but they do come on the market from time to time. Best way is to do a running check of various websites like this one and check their sales section. For example, I found a discontinued one I was looking for on Brian Enos' site.

Good hunting!

EDIT: Just looked on the Michigan Gun Owners site and there was one listed there last month for $150. Don't know if it's still available (probably not) but it shows they are out there if you look.

Optics is one of those areas that I have learned the hard way to spend the money once and buy quality the first time.
I also understand the reality of money being tight, so I second the idea of looking for something used. You might post a WTB ad here.

As far as choosing a scope, I think I'd recommend a 2x.
I put a 4x on my 29-3. It's a nice scope but the 4x has a smaller field of view. It makes it more difficult to acquire your target.
Just a thought.

I have a Simmons on my TC Contender .44 Mag Super 14. I have not had any issues with it. The Contender probably absorbs recoil better than a revolver.

I also have one on my 30-30 barrel. This one will put three shots into .5" at 50 yds from a rest. Again the Contender probably absorbs the recoil better. I mention the 30-30 to illustrate the experience that I have had with the Simmons scope.

I've had a Bushnell Trophy 2-6x scope on my Ruger Super Redhawk for over 20 years. I shoot nothing but full power loads of either 240 or 300 grain bullets. The scope has handled them all. I also have the Bushnells on my T/C Contenders.

I first scoped a super blackhawk with a Leupold 2x. It reduced group size by half at 75-100 yards and doubled target acquisition time. I no longer own either and my only scoped handguns are Contenders. I found that recoil eats scopes for breakfast and the time to find the target at closer ranges was not worth the trouble. I went to a fixed bifocal the Optometrist set in his office with a single action and the cylinder removed. Getting the lined bifocal right at the front sight allowed me to move my head a miniscule amount to go between target and front sight and made me much happier with a handgun. If you really want to scope a handgun I believe it best suited to tree stand hunting or non timed shooting events.

On my 629, a B&L 2-6X. Bushnell bought them out and still sells that scope. I can not vouch for the Bushnell version.
I have a Leu 4X on my 625 45 colt.
I like both of these scopes.
