Fake handicap

I am permanently disabled due to an accident over 9 years ago. Until I was authorized to resume driving, I had a temporary (red) placard. Once I resumed driving (and I accepted the reality that I would never be as good as I had been before the accident), I obtained the permanent (blue) placard. When a handicapped person gets either a placard or handicapped plates, they are issued a handicapped person ID. When I am operating a vehicle, or passenger in same, I must have that ID with me if I am using a handicapped parking space. Technically, if a person is using a handicapped space and doesn't have the handicapped ID when challenged, they are subject to a large fine and community service.

FWIW, since surgery last September (number 24), I have been getting around rather well, but need to stop and rest after about 30 yards on a bad day. On a good day, if someone doesn't see the scars and brace, they could swear that I was abusing the privilege. Sometimes, I just don't have the endurance to hide the pain of every day tasks.

I will be quite frank, I do get mad when I see cars in handicapped spaces that don't display tags or placards. Since most parking lots are private property, LEOs don't like to get involved, and many stores could care less. Personally, I will not provide my handicapped ID to anyone other than a LEO or a store representative. I don't have to justify myself to any old Joe Schmoe.

If you really feel that someone is abusing handicapped parking privileges, you can report the vehicle at this site. Don’t know how much good it does, but I always feel better! Handicapped Parking Fraud - Handicapped Parking Violators - Help Make a Difference

I let it go, but my husband sometimes reports these instances when it affects me. We live next to a university, and the healthy female students seem to think the spots are meant for them. If he see's the campus sticker without a placard, he gets tweaked.

Here in SC, the photo from your drivers license is laminated onto the mirror placard. Removes doubt from concerned citizens, but of course I hate my picture.

I'm disabled, I have a degenerative peripheral motor nerve condition and a few years ago my neurologist was ready to plop my butt in one of those electric scooty chairs.
I actually told him, "(expletive deleted) that!"
Took me most of a year and lotsa help from my wife but I relearned to walk using the muscles that still work. Also, with the help of my family doctor, I researched and found supplements and a prescription pill that help to keep me up and mobile.
The point is that if you saw me, you'd never figure that there's anything "wrong" with me. I look as healthy as can be.
I do have a placard but I generally leave the handicapped spaces for people worse off than me.
I say "generally" because some days are better than others. Cold weather really messes with me. Also if I'm going to be somewhere and I know that my meds'll wear off by the time I leave, I'll go ahead and use the handicapped parking. I know I'll have difficulties getting to the car later.

Is there anyway to report abuse of handicap placards? Not license plates but those plastic things that hang off the inside mirror.

I know someone who is clearly misusing them....in fact I don't believe for a minute there is any legitimate reason for this person to have them..... and I see it every day and it drives me absolutely insane.

I tried Googling this and all I can find is the PA DMV topics on how to apply

Look at Title 18, Chapter 49, Subsection 4903, part B. It has to do with false swearing. When they fill out an application for a handicap tag/placard they are swearing the information they provided is correct.

Good luck finding a law enforcement agency who would prosecute someone violating that. Although the PA DMV (click this link) may help you. They usually spend a lot of time prosecuting individuals who use stolen information to obtain false state IDs.

After 60 years in a wheelchair, Ruthie's sister no longer gets upset at parking spot abusers. She refuses to let it ruin one minute of her day.

My mom, on the other hand(83 with COPD and requires oxygen), will climb in their grill and stay there until she gains satisfaction. It's a beautiful thing to watch.......I should sell tickets.

I have had back surgery and also has an artificial right leg (BTN) In addition a pinched nerve in my back from spinal arthritis. I have a placard and in summer I wear shorts so no one complains. I normally park in a regular spot as there are people who need the handicapped spots worse than me. On bad days I will use the spot if available. I also use a cane as in addition of helping me sometimes it makes a dandy self defense weapon :D. If you saw me walking without the cane you would just notice a small limp so you really can't judge someone by looking at them.

I got into it with a guy at the VA yesterday for parking in a handicapped spot. No placard. I asked if he was handicapped and got a smart *** answer. So I parked directly behind his car and he went south on me. There was a VA Cop standing nearby who came over. Found out the guy wasn't handicapped and wrote him a $200 ticket and made him move his car. I love happy endings.

I'm in a weird position with this, my wife is entitled to a handicapped parking spot I am not.

When I'm out without her I don't use a spot but when I come home in the morning and I know she's going to be the next person into the car I park in the handicap spot for her convenience.

We have neighbor who had a placard because she was a caregiver for a disabled kid and she abused the Hell out of it until she lost the job.
Long story short my wife and I ran into her several times in that spot out in front of our apartment and she'd watch me helping my wife out of the car and over the curbs and she Did. Not. Give. A. Damn. and nothing I or anyone else said was going to change that.

You can watch hours of videos about this on You Tube and not one of the people they catch cares.

I don't waste my time anymore

I knew a 75 year old dentist who had a placard for his wife.He was quite healthy himself, but abused the privelage and took pride in it [emoji57]

But can you walk casually in high heels? :D

My wife has the blue tags.
With the hip replacement, two cracked vertebrates she can't walk more then 20 Ft with out a cane or must be in the wheelchair or power chair.
Here you must have the ID card with you.
I don't use the HC spots unless she is with me.
A $420 ticket seems to stop most from using the spots.
They are cracking down on who has them now.
My SIL is still using the one from husband #6 who has been gone for
12 years now.
They will catch her when it has to be renewed I hope.
BTW, I call her the "BLACK WIDOW" , put two more in the ground after
the one that had the H C tags......

I think some doctors abuse the hell out of issuing the handicapped placards. My wife was offered one from a doctor she used to go to because she is short, at 4' 9". She didn't ask for this; he brought up the subject. And she turned him down too.

Wow! Did he offer her any other percs?

Get it perks? Percodan.

I guess he keeps them coming back for more. What a quack.

I never realized being 4'9" was a disability. You wouldn't believe how many times I cracked my head on something just for being 6'1".

I need representation.

I have a Handicap Placard but to look at Me You would say I don't need it.
I have had both hips replaced,I also have epidural fibrosis and arachnoiditis in My back and My right knee is going bad.
I don't always park in the handicap spot but there are times I have to due to pain.
So unless the Person doesn't have a placard and parks in a handicapped spot I would not say anything at all but if They don't have a placard I would and have called the security officer for that Lot.
