Speaking of the Coen Brothers, Give me your Opinion Of "O Brother Where Art Thou"
I loved how they sowed numerous threads into this movie and brought them all home at the end.
There are so many delightful quotes from this movie. One of many favorite is when Pete asked Ulysses, "What does Satan look like?" Ulysses answers..." Well there are all manners of lesser imps or demons Pete but the great Satan himself is red and scaly with a bifurcated tail and he carries a hay fork!"

Another Great movie from the Coen Bros.
I liked the part John Goodman played and his conversation
with Clooney.
I also like the character of Pretty Boy Floyd in the movie.
The scene at Woolworths.
The scene with the little kid and the rifle...then driving the getaway car.

My english teacher wife drug me to see a somewhat modern version of Homer's the Odyssey set in Alabama 1930's. I LOVED IT. Couldn't get enough. We have gone to the motion picture show 4 times to see it, probably 8 times watched it on DVD. "Pete, we thought you was a toad".

Fun movie, for sure, but the real standout in it is the music.

Your English teacher wife needs to put you in the corner with the DUNCE cap.
"Drug" is a noun. She "dragged" you to the flick.

The part at the beginning where they're voting-Delmer says
"Well, I'm with you fellas!" Priceless.
If I had to choose 100 all time movies, this would be one of them.
Stellar soundtrack.
Did you catch the part with Wash's boy shooting the old WWI Springfield '06?

I'm not a fan of bluegrass or country, but that movie is one of my all time favorites. Very entertaining & the music is excellent, especially "Man of Constant Sorrow".

I'm pretty sure it was Mississippi. The man made lake that caused all the trouble is real and is in the northern part of that state.

I forgot about the music in this picture. You are spot on. I never much cared for the Bluegrass genre until I saw those three beautiful sirens singing in the creek washing their clothes. Wow!

The music is outstanding. I bought the CD and enjoy it.
Thanks for the reminder.....going to dig it out and give
it a listen. I was born and raised where Bluegrass was born
....Southwest Virginia. When I was a kid, didn't like
the "string music" that my dad listened to. Boy have I
changed.

Definitely Mississippi. Much of it was filmed around Canton, Mississippi. I remember when it was being filmed.

A great movie with great music and many good quotes. I watch is whenever it is on. Here's one of my favorite quotes by Ulysses:
"A woman is the most fiendish instrument of torture ever devised to bedevil the days of man."

I had no interest in seeing it, though I like bluegrass. Gina was watching it on one of the premium cable channels one time and I was walking back and forth through the room doing stuff. On my third time through I said, "Hey, this is The Odyssey!" (I'd had no idea), and sat down to watch it. I recorded it and watched it all the way through after that - turned out to be quite captivating movie!

I'll have to try it again. I loved the score--my fondness for bluegrass and old-time country music is strong--but simply couldn't get into the movie.
Clearly I didn't get far enough in to recognize the hand of Homer.

Love the music. Don't know how many times I've used the line "dumber than a bag of hammers". Time line is a little shaky, George Nelson had been dead for 3 years at the time the movie was set.

One of my top favorite movies, and also, IMO, one of the most quoteable ones.
I love the music as well.
BTW, "them sireens done loved him up and turned him into a...horny toad"
Also
Baby Face Nelson in the car with the Tommy Gun
"Cows-I hate cows worse'n I hate coppers."
"Oh George, not the livestock"

My favorite line: I guess I'm the only one that remains unaffiliated.
It is a good movie, and made me go out and rent the movie that provided the title for the film, Sullivan's Travels, a classic I had never seen.

The fun thing is, you can track all those
towns they were going through on the map.
I once paused the DVD, as I watched their travels.

Great movie. I watch it every time I run across it while channel surfing
I liked the gospel singers toward the end of the movie.
There are too many quote able moments too pick out one.
I don't know it exactly but when Charles Durning (Pappy Odaniel) said to his rotund dim witted son "Thank God your mother died giving birth to you, she'd have died at the sight of you" just cracked me up.

I'm LOLing out loud just reading some of these quotes!
One I use every now and then is "It appears to be some sort of a...congregation"
It's one of my favorite movies. And I love the soundtrack.
As an aside, I saw Chris Thomas King, (Tommy Johnson) at the Waterfront Park Blues Festival a few years ago. He was disappointing. He was drinking a pint of something his entire set, he only played electric, and neither my buddy Martin or I were very impressed.

I didn't know he was dubbed, for a couple of years.
I thought, "Well, he's Rosemary's nephew, so I guess it makes sense he can sing".

Can't believed so many people loved that movie, I guess I'll have to be the **** in the punch bowl and say I thought the movie was pretty lame. But the music was great and I became an instant fan of Allison Krauss and Union Station after I saw the movie, and I never liked Bluegrass before.

Loved it one of my top ten. I used it to teach some teens at church. Opened with the scene of "I'm voting for yours truly. I'm with you fellers". Then the next scene is where the kid is shooting at them. Pete and Ulysses hide behind the true leader, Delmar. Delmar would argue to his dying breath that he is not the leader but he is the one that acts and doesn't talk.
There is a Delmar in every group, who do you follow?.

I did rather like the movie until I got sick of Clooney. Now anything with him in it is banned from my television. And yes, I'm running out of things to watch any more!

We watch this movie every year on my birthday, I never get tired of it. Something new each time I see it. Chock full of great music and notable quotes, it just never stops entertaining. I can't tell you the number of times one or more of them finds its way into our everyday conversations...here is a particular favorite:
"Well, ain't this place a geographical oddity. Two weeks from everywhere!"

I often go to youtube and watch Allison Krauss and others sing the great bluegrass songs from the movie. I quit watching the movie about 20% into it. I can't stand G. Clooney in anything. IMHO, There are forty-eleven actors that could have done a better job in this movie. .........

Another quote came from a close friend " I didn't really care for it. It reminded me too much of my relatives."

A little trivia. When Homer Stokes breaks up the radio show the boys are singing on, an elderly gentleman throws a tomato (or something) at Homer. That man is "Doc" Watson the CW singer of Tennessee Stud fame.

"I'll Fly Away" in the movie was performed by the Kossoy Sisters, Irene and Ellen, twins. They were unaware of the fact until they attended a showing of the movie. They were not asked for permission to use the song and it was only recently they got official recognition. No dough but they were pleased.
The "soundtrack" album has Alison Kraus and Gillian Welch doing the vocals. Here is the Kossoy sisters performance of the song
