Late night Horror Movie Hosts
How many stayed up on Friday nights when You were a Kid to watch old Horror movies?
They were a regular thing with Us and We would have Our Friends over and make a party out of it.
We had a Guy called Goulardi and He got the T.V.station sued so many times it was crazy.T.V. was live back then and the Managers were always afraid of what this Guy would do or say next. But Money talks and He was so popular that They let Him do His thing hoping He wouldn't do anything to crazy.
He was so popular that when His show was on the Cleveland Police reported a drop in crime at that time,I guess the bad guys like Him also. Nobody could get away with the things He pulled today,They would be off the Air in a second.

Chicago in the late '60, early '70s had Svenghouli. I believe he was the host of "Creature Features".
There were actually two weekend horror movie shows in Chicago at the time. I forget the other.
I believe that "Creature Features" was on Channel 9 (WGN) and the other on Channel 32.
I recall seeing such classics of the cinematic arts as "The Torture Chamber of Doctor Sadism" and "The Mushroom People".

During the 1960s & 70s in Memphis, Saturday night TV belonged to Fantastic Features with Sivad, your monster of ceremonies.
The host was portrayed by station executive Watson Davis. (Sivad is Davis spelled backwards.) Davis filled in commercial breaks with silly skits and corny jokes. His fans just loved him.
The show was extremely popular and Sivad always drew huge crowds with personal appearances.
This show helped cultivate my love for Sci-fi/ monster movies.

I have Joe Bob's very first book titled Joe Bob Goes to the Drive-In, first published in 1987. Twenty-nine years later, it still cracks me up. Stephen King wrote the introduction. Joe Bob (whose real name is John Bloom) reviews and talks about all these schlock films and the people who acted in them. It's funny stuff with such a strong flavor of the eighties...a decade that I thoroughly enjoyed.

I will admit, Elvira was much much much much nicer to look at but Sivad was the best, there couldn't have been anyone in the U.S. better, no way. He'd sell out The Mid South Coliseum during the Mid South Fair with his act. He was a trip to meet in person too when out of character, friendly but with a very strange, corny sense of humor. He was as much of 60s Memphis as anyone.

Fortunately, Elvira's costume wasn't always glued on. Dick Clark's Bloopers ect. had a few outtakes of "wardrobe malfunctions" most were unintentional malfunctions, but a few were, shall we say, arranged, and just didn't quite violate FFC rules.
I never got to see original broadcasts of any of Elvira's shows! In Central Ohio we had "Fritz the Nite-Owl" less creepy and more just strange (in a twisted, funny way!)

You do know that those weren't natural, right? They were a costume prosthetic made especially for her to host the show. Sorry to bust your bubble.

I really got a kick at how They were able to put Goulardi into a Movie and look like He was interacting with the People in it.

I'm not so sure about that. I saw several interviews with her, and she always looked the same.
Then there was the famous "poodle walk" in LA.....

In Cincinnati in the seventies, we had some poor guy who was reduced to being "The Cool Ghoul" on TV on Saturday nights; he looked like an Italian Tourist with fangs, but the movies were scary to a kid.

When I lived in VA we had Creature Feature with Count Gore de Vol.
In 1989, I won a co-host contest and had my 15 minutes of fame as "Wayne the Werewolf."
Did my own costume and make up.

I grew up watching NYC based local television throughout the 60s and early 70s. I don't remember any late night horror show live hosts. We had Chiller Theater on WPIX Channel 11 which had a bad animation of an arm with a six fingered hand next to a scary tree (ooooooogh scary) and Creature Features on WNEW Channel 5 that used some kind of double exposure montage that was more trippy than scary as it's lead in. I vaguely remember Zacherly doing a kiddie show and some holiday specials but I think he might have been out of Philly and was occasionally borrowed by NYC stations.
I recently saw Elvira on one of those reality based Las Vegas car restoration shows. I can honestly say that both she and MaryAnn from Gilligan's Island have aged much better than most other TV celebs of the that era.

Back in the late 60's early 70's around here (central Indiana) it was
Sammy Terry.
We stayed up all night watching the horror flicks.

Our Creature Feature was MT Graves, the fella with the feet on the right. He holed up in a dungeon under local station WCKT until the mid 60's. Not late night, we'd cut our Saturday adventures short to catch the great B&W flicks from the 50's that aired at 4:30 PM.

We had Bob Wilkins as a Creature Features host in the bay area in the 70's through the early 80's. He was a well liked TV personality. He sat in a big chair which a cigar and had a bunch of props to help make the mood creepy. I was young and wasn't supposed to be up later than 8 but I would sneak out of bed at 11 pm and would watch with my older brother. I loved scary movies when I was young, especially the classics. The new ones scare me too much.

I loved this show too, it was so funny how they ripped apart campy movies. They are supposed to be making 12 new episodes which are supposed to air sometime soon. If you are on facebook look for the "official" Mystery Science Theater 3000 page for info.

For me as a kid it was Dr. Paul Bearer, in SW Florida. He did it for almost 25 years.

I wasn't around for Vampira.....
...but I thought Elvira looked even better.
We had a guy here in Charleston by the name of Ashley Ghastly That was funny to watch. He had a dry, deadpan delivery that could make even old jokes sound funny.
I like Svengoolie. The humor isn't great but sometimes he has me rolling with those songs he makes up. What I really like about his show is how he gives background on the actors, what they later appeared in and production anecdotes.

Growing up in Central Florida, I used to watch him on WTOG channel 44 out of Tampa. Thanks for the memories!
