Not a fan of romance movies, but greatly enjoyed Murphy's Romance.
I first saw this when it came out-and watched it everytime it was aired-such as on TCM recently.

Being a fan of both Garner and Field--they did very well in this movie.

Big Jim Garner fan, so it is easy to like this film. Also, to get Charles Lane out of retirement as the grouchy old man he picks up in the Studebaker, who gets a nose bleed at speeds higher than 35 MPH. Lane lived to be 102.

I would have posted more-but was losing connection. The only scene I hated in the movie-was when they went into the thgeater to watch one of those jason slasher pics.Murphy walked out as im sure Garner would have if he went to see it.

Just establishing his character's strong ties to the past and those values. He drives the only car he's ever owned, keeps his drug store as it had been for 50 years, helps people to help themselves instead of handouts and is well regarded, although aloof, in his small community. Not a reaction to the violence (Murphy served in Korea and was active in the VFW ) but to blood for shock with no real narrative value. My wife loves those kind of films, but they do nothing for me. No worries...I sleep with one eye open.

The one person missing from the movie that should have been in it (I think he was still alive then?) is Jack Elam. He'd been hilarious.

He was surely that in a lot of films later in life like THE APPLE DUMPLING GANG, and the sequel among many others. But, when he was lean, he was mean.

I also like that movie!
Would like to see it again.
Thinking back, I like where they are at the horse auction. They finally bring out some quality horses and Sally tells Jim 'you can bid now.'
Unfortunately, the big boxes have squeezed out the local drugstores.
Like my old buddy Frank.
Once he had a Drugstore in Hernando, MS with a gunsmith in the back.

Ringo,
I liked the movie too! I mostly like James Garner in most movies I've seen him in. This one was a little different than I expected and I wasn't sure i was gonna like it for a bit. It's not what I'd call a really serious movie, but it was very entertaining and funny in spots. I kind of found it by accident at a time when I couldn't watch the whole thing so I recorded it and came back to it later. I'd watch it again after a while. Kind of a different setting for Sally Field as well and I thought she helped to make the movie work well.

I didnt think id like it either, but I was more than glad I was surprised. Sally Field said in an interview-that James Garner was easy to work with and her faavorite co-star.

That's a great item and a keeper. Screen-worn items can command a great penny. I had a chance once to get a screen worn-Mexican Army soldiers uniform in: The Alamo--it was one of the red uniforms. I dont recall why I diudnt bid on it? I had the money then. I was probably collecting all kinds of WWII German stuff at the time.

You'll have another chance, as many of those were reused from THE LAST COMMAND (1955), from Republic, and came from Western Costume Co as did Luster Bayless. Makes it a bit problematic exactly which ones have ALAMO screen time, but most are from the production. There is a good population of them, so they show up.

Jimbo shoulda won the Oscar that year. Murphy's Romance was one of his best roles.
Met him once at Indy when he came down to the Snakepit and we passed him a beer through the fence and talked racing for another beer or two.
JG has been my favorite actor since I was a kid. RIP Jimbo!

I'm glad to hear that. I'm not surprised. I have the feeling that what you see with James Garner is pretty much what you get. Sometimes what we see on the screen is a far cry from the actual personality of some of these movie stars, and I don't mean that in a good way! I've always felt that I could sit down and have a good visit with Mr. Garner, and I suspect too that Sally Field might be the same. I hope so!

Though I'm a fan of Garner I was surprised at how much I liked "Murphy's Romance". Very nice feel-good flick.
Garner later did some very different work in serious roles. "My Brother's Keeper" starred him as the brother/caretaker of a schizophrenic, portrayed brilliantly by James Woods. Tough and touching movie, in which Garner was very fine.
He teamed with Woods again in "My Name Is Bill W", about the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous. Woods was excellent as Bill Wilson, and Garner was perfect as Dr. Bob Smith.

When I was offered the red uniform--I THINK it was offered for about $1,000?? It was from a John Wayne collector I met on the official John Wayne site about 10 years ago. Its: John Wayne – Official Site and is ran by a narcissist who used to be in the Naval Intel branch.
Id love to have anything from that movie. I havent seen it in ages and not sure if available on DvD yet.

You'll have to PM me his name; I think I might have had an incident with him.
That might have been too high for that costume. If, it had the typed name of an actor who appeared in the film, you can pay close to that amount. But, for one that is just used by an unknown extra, or is not so marked, half of that is fair.
THE ALAMO is on DVD, but not Blu Ray, as yet. A handful of the Duke's films are. I just added THE WAR WAGON to my TRUE GRIT, RIO LOBO, and THE UNDEFEATED group that are.
Good friend of mine in Europe owns Wayne's gold canteen coat from the film that turned up a few years ago. He also has an original 35mm print and many of the uniforms and weapons. I sold him Wayne's THEY WERE EXPENDABLE coat years ago, also worn at the end of THE WINGS OF EAGLES.

He he,the movie i meant was The Last Command-I dont know if its on DvD yet? I have around 90 of Duke's movies on DvD.
I cant recall the name of the guy-he was a bit arrogant and i figured just an "extra" uniform--basic-looking with no buttons-for $1 grand was a bit high. I still have those Generalmajors boards though. :-)) These boards-along with the collar tabs-are now valued around $1,500.
Id give my teeth for something from one of the bigger Duke films. His Beret from The G.B.s sold for about $300-which surprised me and I thought that was low? Several used eye-patches from Grit-have been sold for years now. There were about a dozen of them made and around 6-7 screen used.
One movie im always interested in getting something from-is Allegheny Uprising--I want that Coonskin cap he wore. The other of course-is his holsted and hat from: Stagecoach.

The Green Beret sold for almost $180,000 at the 2011 Estate sale. The one from his closet sold by his son at HERITAGE. Patches do around $25,000 and he wore a fresh one every day. You can see how many there were if you Google for the famous image of after he won the Oscar, he was greeted back on set with everyone wearing one. It was a big crowd.
I don't think anything has survived from ALLEGHENY. Usual result of being rented from Western and then returned only to be reused over and over to wear out and discarded. They did not sense an urgency until 1993 that they needed to 'retire' and protect some assets. For many, it was too late. Wayne costumes survive due to him hiring Bayless and amassing his own wardrobe. Later, in the late 90s, his son Michael, went to Eddie Marks at WCC and bought two racks of what they had left. I bought the rejected third rack. Then, in 2011, Ethan sold 102 of them for the Foundation. The sale, in which 100% of the lots sold, grossed $5.4M.

The Beret first sold around 12 years ago-but was a very low prices. Some Grit eyepatches went for several C notes. I heard that Michael Wayne reacquired some pieces-and that Beret might have been one of them? michael was in charge of Wayne Enterprised but died several or more years ago-so it was split and his wife (whom most of the family doesnt like) got control of alot of stuff. Ethan Wayne-controls the other half-including licencing and such. they still own Duke's very worn "Hondo" hat and I forget what else?
Have you heard any news on whether the John Wayne Mueum in Winterset-ever opened yet?

One thing I forgot to mention above--Pilar paints Duke paintings and sells them. I heard she is doing OK in that line...

I think what you are remembering are the fakes that have been sold - mostly on eBay. When Wayne died, they already had the house and Wild Goose sold. His possession were moved to a storage facility close by in Newport Beach. They sat there for almost 40 years until sorted and brought to market. 99.9% of pieces not coming from that hoard are fake. I sold the pieces from the third rack, which other than the EXPENDABLES coat were from the 30s, but not "Randy" or "Three M"; his pants from the train serial and other obscure pieces. There was a reason Michael did not want them. There were also a few pair of his pants that were found at CRC in Hollywood, and a few others over the years like the canteen coat I mentioned. WCC had sold much of their WWII costumes to a single buyer in the SF area, who came up with his SEABEES tunic and two WITHOUT RESERVATIONS ones. I bought most of the Cagney pieces. His long coat from DARK COMMAND came out of WCC. For years, that was it.
The Museum is going bonkers with new additions including a large statue.
Wayne Enterprises (BATJAC) was always controlled by Michael. The 'new' family, the younger kids by Pillar, got the newly created Foundation for what you state. Michael's widow was not in favor of the sale and does have some nice items including the famous lucky hat and his chaps from RED RIVER.

Figures. Also, on the Museum-it originally was going to cost about $4 million to build, but looks like someone keeps thinking up something else to add. I bought a "brick" years ago-which was a way of funding its build. My rick-is to have my "stage" (internet name) on it.
Michaels widow I THINK also owns some of Dukes movies too?? I wish that guy in Canada-who owns the one surviving uncut copy of: The Alamo-would make a release deal with someone-so we can get to buy a DvD copy. The only way to see this uncut copy-is by laser-disk and occasionally on TCM.
