Heads Up! Tech Support Scam
The old "tech support" scam is back. I just received a phone call from "Viati Tech Support." I didn't answer the phone but looked them up online and it is a scam.
Do not accept unsolicited tech support from anyone, don't give out credit card information and don't allow unsolicited callers access to your computer.
Bad enough that the "IRS" is threatening me with a law suit, I can't get packages delivered, my alleged teenaged grandson has been arrested incident to a car accident and needs bail money and all my friends have been notified that I'm trapped in some god-forsaken country without money. Oh Yes, all this while I'm trying to help the crown prince of Inner Monrovia, somewhere near Nigeria, move a large sum of money out of his country for which I will receive a seven-figure cut just as soon as I make a good-faith deposit to a foreign bank account. Now, this.

I get calls responding to "your inquiry about the commmercial you saw on TV." Of course I never made such an inquiry. The call is a robo job.
Or it's someone with a thick accent redolent of Mumbai who says her name is Gloria. "I am calling from the Windows, it is about your computer." <click>

I saw on tv the other day where they busted a ring on the IRS scam. People from 6 states and some foreign country's. The IRS doesn't like people robbing you before they can.

What amazed me was the amount of money these people were able to get. It was estimated at over $300 million! That's insane.

Tom--lady my ex works with and a Registerd Nurse with a BSN--educated woman--was so terrified she sent them $1500. I always wondered who fell victim to these scams but she was the first I have ever known. I always assumed the people were stupid--I was wrong. I think it's a version of good old fashioned racketeering/stong-arm robbery. And here folks are more scared of the IRS than organized crime.

This just goes to show you the power of the IRS in this country. I don't recall the exact percentages but I once read that this country has like an 80% voluntary tax submission rate. Other countries it's more like 20% and they have to constantly chase folks.
People are definitely afraid of the IRS and this is why even intelligent people will respond to a threat like this.
Sad but true...
