Default How Do You W. Va. People Survive ?

What with bigfoots, werewolves, etc. per Mountain Monsters ?
And considering your proximity to the Potomac River swamp dwellers to the east?
No wonder the feuds erupted there ?

Just watched an episode where the people 😕 of Mountain Monsters used ATVs , large crawler backhoe to attempt to catch a werewolf in a pit before the full moon changed.
The night camera shots were interesting? Think the selfies had the hunters confused! They were looking at themselves and wondering about large hairy creatures with big teeth. And mistaking their cackling laughs for a creature howling? Strange *people? Looking for publicity, and they caught me! 😞
Old well, W. Va. Has some good fishing, IN THE DAYLIGHT!!!!!

Oh, boy. Where should I start!!!

I watched a season or two of that show, and have mixed emotions about it. Of course it is total BS, and portrays West Virginians as complete idiots, but on the other hand, I had a lot of fun watching the show.

I hope that I don't have to explain that there aren't really any monsters here in WV, unless they came from Hollywood!!!

I live near the areas where some of these episodes occurred, and no one that I have ever talked to has ever heard of any of these creatures except the "Mothman", and that's probably only because of the Richard Gere movie.....

Geesh...

Best Regards, Les

The Mothman is the most dangerous and deadly of the WV predators.

I go to West Virginia for the railroads! Cass Scenic RR, Durbin & Greenbrier RR, West Virginia Central, The Cheat Mountain Salamander and more. Never saw a Bigfoot or Sasquatch, but I have heard banjo music along the Greenbrier River.... Paddle faster!

Did you know the "toothbrush" was invented in West Virginia?

"No, how's that?"

Well, if it had been invented anywhere else, it would have been called the "teethbrush"!!!

Ha, Ha, and LOL!!!

I agree, the railroads are outstanding. Especially when you are at a higher vantage point watching them roll along the countryside into the valleys or tunnels.

With regard to the Greenbriar River, I was born in a small town on it's banks, Ronceverte, don't recall any banjo playing. Nearly all of my family lives in a small town in bordering Monroe County, named Union.

Certainly one of the most picturesque areas in America. I think John Denver said it best, "Almost Heaven, West Virginia". Counting down the days until I can retire and return, forever!!

I would agree! ! I mean the "M" -man can bite through bridge girders and concrete pillars like they were nothing.
I saw it myself !!

It takes a bad bad dude to pick a time just 10 days before Christmas to bite through a river bridge loaded with cars.

For those who have not had the edifying experience of watching the tv series the OP was referring to, here's a little teaser, by the way, in this one, the boys are over in Ohio!!! Oh, yeah, "tactical retreat" seems to mean "run away"!!!:

Enjoy!! But remember, don't try this at home!!!

^^That was to funny. Buck down Buck down. The moth man, actually the missing friends, was/were sitting up on the hill laughing so hard they were falling down not unlike these fatsos in the creek.
Good thing there wasn't a hunter in them thar woods that night because he would have been shot full of holes by these idiots. A good laugh anyway.

Mothman sometimes winters in the lower Rio Grande valley in Texas. Except there, he is called the "Big Bird." He has a 12' wingspan. I actually have a personal story about the "Big Bird." I didn't actually see him, but saw some evidence of something which could have been it. I was flying on a company Sabreliner somewhere between Brownsville and Harlingen in the RGV back in the 1977-78 period, and we hit something at about 25,000 feet, which left a substantial dent in the leading edge of the wing, but no blood or feathers. Too high for most birds to fly, especially large birds. Never did figure out what caused it.

My Granddaughter is 9yrs old and ((( Mountain Monsters ))), is Her very favorite TV Show. And She watches it all the time, and She begs me to watch the show with Her. She even has most of them recorded and knows all the cast by name. She can record that show all by Herself. ((( I can't even do that ))). So I have seen most of them many times, But that is ok for it's about the only time She will sit in my lap for very long any more. She thinks She is just getting to big for all that any more. And if I really want to get on the bad side of Her, all I have to do is to harangue Her about Her Show not being real. And if I do that, BOY oh Boy I am really on Her bad list. When I take Her hunting with me ((( really We just go for long walks in the woods ))). She still walks real close to me and always sits in my lap when we stop and sit down to eat our sandwiches. I truly hope She will learn to love Shooting Guns, like Her Daddy does. Because who else will I leave all my guns to. Her name is ((( JERSEY ))) and Her and Her Daddy are the most important things in my Wife and I`s life.

Ken:

That's a great story. My oldest granddaughter is 9 also. I have a grandson 2, and another granddaughter 4. I think it's great that they are the way they are at those ages. I'm sure glad that yours enjoys that show. It is sort of fun in a goofy way. One of my buddies is an inspector with the Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission (ABCC), here in WV. He has to go all over this part of the state checking on bar licenses and stuff.n He tells me that he has actually met some of these guys at a little bar over in NW WV. He says they hang out there when they are shooting (cameras, anyway) in that area. Says that they are pretty much what you see in the show.

Best Regards, Les

A couple months ago I was on the way to visit my grand daughter
in Huntington, WVa. Was making good time when I hit the annual
Moth Man Festival in Point Pleasant, took me 45 minutes to get
through town. Them dudes take their Moth Man stuff seriously.

les.b, I watched the posted video. I profoundly appreciate it.

That two minutes and forty-eight seconds should have all / any of us, who can spell "dog" the same way twice, feeling better about themselves.

I did learn there is a difference in, "putting Ninja", the regular method (??); and "putting HEAVY Ninja" on some one, or some thing.

Apparently, the "heavy" type involves a kick to the crotch, at least to the grassman, whereas plain old "regular Ninja", I think, means you break a piece of balsa plank with a bare-handed chop, thereby leaving your victim crumpled in fear.

My only complaint about West Virginia is the tolls on 64.. Taking those back roads to avoid the tolls are pretty nerve racking considering my extreme distrust of fellow drivers I'm forced to share the road with.. Other than that, it's a pretty cool state

Monsters, big foot, haunts, catawompus', swamp gas lights that are far from the lowland swamps, poltergeists of long dead civil war soldiers and
this guy Momo the Monster are not in WV.

Someone sold the moth likker a bill of goods. Everyone knows they reside in the Ozarks.

Momo is 7' tall, very hairy and has red orange eyes, the last sight of many a missing soul.

To get there drive up Zombie road to ghost holler. Park at dusk and take a moonlight walk......

Yep!! I think they are in their 5th season now, and the only thing I think they ever caught was a pretty good sized pig. Now that they have covered most of West Virginia and eastern Ohio, I wouldn't be surprised to see them heading down there to "Southern Virginia"!!! You folks may have some monsters you don't even know about!!

It's beautiful up here in the mountains.
There's lotsa hiking, mountain biking, camping and other fun mountain stuff.
There's a river less than a mile from town and we've been canoeing and tubing down it.
Ya just gotta keep an ear out for the banjo music:

Were gonna need back-up Trapper !!!

Where's Huckleberry ???

The wife and I used to watch it for laughs before they
started charging extra to watch that channel on our
cable.
The one monster that lived in the water was intriguing
as the trap the boys built relied on the monsters ability
to recharge itself with heat. So they built a funnel trap
coming out of the water that was lined with big torches.
Of course the monster used the heat from the fires to
energize itself and broke the trap all to pieces.

Darn it, they was so close to having that one.....

Chuck, I ain't never seen any fellers who come closer to almost catching something every week in my life!!! The scary thing is, all those dangerous critters are still running around unchecked out here in the wilds of West Virginia!!!

Why is it always West Virginia? Have you guys seen "Wrong Turn"? Yep... West Virginia!! (Except at the end of the first one, it says "filmed in Canada"!).

Best Regards, Les

As a moderately civilized, educated and literate East Tennessee hillbilly, long transplanted to Louisville but still a mountain boy at heart, I really have no patience for **** shows like that or "Call Of The Wild Man" that push a stereotype. Or for "Ghost Adventures", or "Finding Bigfoot" or any of the other Bravo Sierra shows with the allegedly spooky infrared camera work.

But pay no attention, I'm grumpier than usual (an impressive feat) tonight.

les.b, we'll have to get to the monsters later. Right now the town just across the way is real busy trying to set the murder record for one year. (Humans)
Just now they are only one over the record. Gotta set the bar high boys !

All "monsters" aside, I wish anyone interested in some true West Virginia doings would get the DVD: "The wild and wonderful Whites of West Virginia". Never seen anything like it.
For just a hint, googleize up that title.

By the way, I love "West by God". Spent quite a bit of time galavanting about. I'd rather spend my time there than in "HAAVADD square".
Although all the residents can't define "genuine", most of em are.

Across the Big Sandy River in Kentucky, or across Ohio River, you guessed it, in Ohio; The Grassman & The Mothman are considered local residents. My sister-in-law's ex-family seem to contain several of the genes from swimming in that shallow pool! Some of the Mountain Monsters I have seen at family weddings! But you got to understand, at least their momma loves them!

West Virginia is one of the most beautiful states in the country. The people are friendly and when you wave at them they wave back with all of their fingers, not just one as in most places. I get down to the old family place as much as possible just to breathe the air. The state and its people do not deserve the jokes and bad mouthing they get. As to this forum, I understand it is all in good fun and there is no intent to cause hurt and I don't believe anyone takes as such. If anyone did mean harm, the bigfoots, werewolves and Mothman would get them for sure!

I agree , I traveled for a living for 35 years and I've never been anywhere in WVA that folks didn't go the extra mile for you and seemed genuinely happy to do it. In Parkersburg once I recall
having to work late, and calling the motel dining room to ask them to make up sandwitches since we weren't going to be finished before their closing time---their answer was that they would stay open and wait for us and cook for us whenever we got there, and they did. And there were hundreds of incidents like that, that happened over the years
If you want some statistics about West Virginians, check the military records, that Great State had the highest per capatia numbers of casualties in WWII than any other state in the union.
Check your U.S. Navy history, the U.S.S. West Virginia, a Battleship, was hit during the attack on Pearl Harbor, with great loss of life--and remember, in those days, Battleships were crewed with as many Sailors from the State the ship was named for as possible
One of my best friends is from West Virginia, and he is one of the finest men I've ever known and he embodies all that is good from that great state.
So, the next time you meet a West Virginian, shake his hand and thank him on behalf of everyone in that Great State, our whole country could take a lesson from West Virginia, they have always gone the extra mile in service to the nation and to their fellow man.

That's true.
When we first moved out here from the Washington DC area, it was a bit like culture shock.
You walk into a store and they say, "how y'all doing?" instead of "what you want!?"
People smile and wave and not with their middle finger.
At a four way stop, everyone waves the other guy through.
I remember one winter when my wife's Dodge Neon got stuck. This big ol' country boy in a 4wd truck stops, physically picks up the front of the car, moves it to a clear spot, smiles, waves and goes on his way. Holy (bad word) he just picked up the front of the car.

I personally know John Tice, aka as Trapper John. He is a retired Boilermaker who was a Project Superintendent for Riley Stoker, working on power house maintenance and repair. I worked as one of his foremen on an air heater replacement.

He is the salt of the earth. During my time with him, he was a stand up guy, he never backtracked on anything he said and stood by his men when he needed to. He was smart, he listened when someone had something to say and we put in @500,000 man-hours and nobody got hurt.

Having said that, he would spin a yarn and yank your chain with the best of them. If fun was the objective, truth just might take a backseat.

Jim:

Now that's a real tribute. These fellows on this show are clearly having fun doing it, and they are sure "spinning a yarn"... But it's all in good fun, I believe. Some of the "traps" that they build are clearly well conceived, even if their quarry is a little, let us say, "mythical"!!

Best Regards, Les

I didn't actually see him, but saw some evidence of something which could have been it.
DWalt got it right. My bird hunting buddy of 40 years (jeez) was a WV district biologist. For a time he lived on the public hunting area where the Moth Man emerged. The area is in close proximity to the the Ohio river, relatively flat, and has several ponds and open fields. Some of the local kids used the secluded roads for lovers lane. One night a couple rounded a bend and there stood a six foot tall creature with red eyes. When it took off it had a 10 foot wing span. Scared them pretty badly. Buddy said it was a sand hill crane. Said they occasionally sat down to rest on their way south. Kentucky got the derby, TX got everything else, we got the Moth Man. What can you do?

My boy lives right in the same area you are talking about. The
locals call it TNT, because there was a government facility that
made explosives there during WW2. This is were all the Mothman
sightings are suppose to be. The only wierd happening that I can
remember, was on one visit we ate at a rib joint. I got a extra
Rack to go. We had been shopping here and there and when I
was done unloading the car, I missed my ribs. Went back out to
check in car, no ribs. Son & DIL said Mothman got them and hacked on me all evening. Next morning mystery was solved.
The neighbors ornery beagle " Bart the wonder dog" had nabbed
my ribs between my trips into the house. Normally I would have
shot a dog for this, but Bart hates cats, so do I so I cut him some slack.
