I know it was sometime in the early 60's, but not what exact year. Did they quit putting them on all models at the same time, or did they phase them out over time? Did they eliminate the diamond magnas and keep producing the diamond target stocks - or vice versa - or did they stop making both at about the same time?

If you're looking for a hard and fast rule, you picked the wrong company. S&W had very few abrupt cut offs. They phased things in and out. I don't think anyone has really been able to nail it down. Most of us assume it was about the same time the GCA '68 changed serials. An even better question is why. Or have they stopped making grips and just use outside suppliers. Altamont still supplies them some grips with the diamond centers. Ugly, and not of the right size and shape, but they're diamonds.

For our inexact purposes, just figure 67 or 68. Then don't be shocked if it turns out wrong on some models.

I've been hanging around here long enough to know that S&W never throws anything away, and that they use up old stock. I know not to be surprised if I see something that seems to fall outside the accepted "rules" on dates.

Your answer of 67-68 (in general) is specific enough and the vagueness is also pretty much in line with what I expected to learn. So no big surprises there. :D
