Howdy,

Just received a history letter which states that my revolver shipped to Phillip Gall & Sons, Inc. in Lexington, Kentucky in 1970.

Looks like they were in business for over 100 years and moved several times. At the time my firearm was shipped to them, they were on South Upper Street. Just curious if anyone out there remembers their store when it was on South Upper Street? Thanks.

“Gall's got its start when Isaac Gall, an immigrant from Lithuania, and his father, Phillip, started the Gall's store in downtown Lexington in 1904 as a second-hand shop on Water Street. The store moved to South Upper Street in 1928; 230 West Main in 1972; to the now-defunct Lexington Mall in 1983; and to Woodhill in 1993.
In 2007, Phillip Gall's filed for bankruptcy, citing competition from the Internet and big sporting goods chains.”

I don't live in Lexington, but I go there from time to time. Its not a bad place at all. Some of the folks are crazy, ad in UK fans. Its all they talk about and they all wear UK shirts. I'm guessing most have never set foot on the campus, but they love round ball. Even the ones without teeth. Better looking and speaking girls than Louisville.

Gall's was a sporting goods and police supply house for years. I've been there but the prices seemed a bit high. You could do better at a discount house or on the internet.

Can't really help you out much. I was young (probably 4-7 years old) and really don't recall a lot about it but as a kid I visited Galls a few times with my mother or father. It would've been in the late 60s to early 70s.
My mother owned a uniform shop in Louisville and she ordered much of her inventory from them. Most of the uniforms, shoes, leather and most other gear like handcuffs, clubs and flashlights she carried all came from them. On occasion we would make a trip from Louisville to Lexington to pick stuff up. I don't recall any firearms there though.

Not quite old enough to remember when they were on South Upper Street, but I remember when they were on West Main Street.

They sold guns and police/fire equipment. Had that market sewed up in central Kentucky. When they moved from West Main Street, they stopped selling guns. When they moved to The Lexington Mall, and then to Woodhill, they were an outdoors store--Tents, backpacks, camping equipment, rock climbing equipment, skiing gear and so on. That store eventually closed.

Somewhere in there their police/fire equipment division moved to a building at Todd's Road and Palumbo Drive. They then moved to their current location on Russell Cave Road where they still sell police and fire equipment. I get their catalogue every now and then.

yeah i remember the one on main st,my buddy virgil pryor worked there for a while and as stated they were a high priced store, my dad got a 224 weatherby mag from them

Thy also had a small store located in one of the bottom levels of Eastland shopping center. I bought some 38 specials from them there. I dont remember the date but they had a bulletproof vest that was shot at with different calibers of pistol rounds.

I worked at G.E in Lexington with Pete Wyatt ,he said his granpa Wyatte was Phillap Galls gunsmith ,who back in the I would guess 1950 to 1970's era ,and he also was a master locksmith in Lex ,for anyone who might remember him
