Killing time this morning as I woke up early, and an old movie was on that I hadn't seen before, "Mobsters (1991)," starring Christian Slater as "Lucky" Luciano. The plot was the rise of the Italian Mafia in New York during the early 1930s. One of the characters was Vincent "Mad Dog" Coll, a somewhat famous Irish-born mob enforcer and assassin. The interesting thing was his favorite assassination weapon, which appears to be a S&W M&P with an unusually long barrel, well over 6", I'd say 8-3/4". I don't think there was such a long-barreled M&P offered. Or was there? And if so, did the real-life Coll favor such a revolver?

Looking at some enlargements from the IMFD pictures, the gun Coll uses is clearly a Colt, and not a small one either.

Another Christian Slater movie from early 90s that I like was True Romance. Lots of good guns in that flick and the 3 way shoot out at the end is one of the best gun fights ever.

I forgot about the IMFD site. I did some internet research on Mad Dog Coll, but couldn't find any specific mention of his using a long-barreled revolver. He was a bad dude. One comment made was "Everyone in New York wanted him on a slab in the Coroner's Office." He ended up there with 15 .45 bullet holes from a Thompson in his body. Shot down in a phone booth. Triggermen could have been Bugsy Siegel and Frank Costello but no one knows as no one was ever arrested. But no one, not even the NYC Police, much cared who did it as long as he was finally gone.
